What a sense of pride being able to escort the Local One Bagpipe Band through the sea of people lining the streets of Pearl River on Sunday. Just want to thank them again for a great time. Also want to thank brother Lynch for the amazing spread put out for all to enjoy. I recommend to all members to get out there and see for themselves how our band represents this union so well. Last parade is this Saturday in Rockville Center. Get out there and support your band.

                              Thanks again,

First id like to thank Mike Duffy for having compassion for the out of work brothers, because i know what its like to have to put food on your table for your kids. So thank you Mike. I guess the halls not going to put the unemployment list up on the website to make it easier for the brothers out of work. I guess they got something to hide. The only reason i say that is because when i got layed off for lack of work, the very next day they sent somebody to work at the same company. Is it fair? What do you think?... Just trying to keep them honest.Because when i was working for World Elevator-Otis they had 1 mechanic covering all of Jersey,Staten Island,Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx when men are out of work. You think thats fair....one guy covering all that area when theirs other brothers out of work? Heres something for the hall to think about "Whereas,we,the Elevator Constructor from the various cities in the United States and Canada,in covention assembled, having seen the necessity for a more thorough organization of our trade, and that a common interest and sympathy with each other urges us to demand the immediate consoldation of the various unions, believing by thus doing we creeate a common bond of brotherhood/sisterhood having for its object the improvement of our moral, social and industrial standing,we have therefore formed this International Union"

I have received a few posts in response to brother Murphy's post. Attending meetings are important, for many reasons. It can be difficult for Brothers and Sisters who have been out of wok for a while to attend. Those unemployed members still have all the bills and responsibilities of the working members. Some have found work at night to support their families and are unable to attend. For others the cost of going to a meeting might be a problem, and for others who have been out of work for an extended period, it can be a little depressing. If  you are working, you should be at the meetings. It's tough to make them all but let's all try to make as many as possible. If you are unemployed and not able to make the meetings right now, your seat will always be there for you when you can.

Who runs the list? I thought the halls ran the list not the company. I dont understand why we cant have the list posted, its more convenient for us. Its OUR list, the unions list. Not the companies. If nobody have anything to hide i dont see a problem with it.

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY WE CANT HAVE THE OUT OF WORK BROTHERS+SISTERS LIST ON THE LOCAL#1 WEBSITE. IF ANYTHING I BELIEVE IT WILL HELP THEM. I HAVE RECEIVED CALLS FROM FRIENDS+BROTHERS, WITH THEM  EVEN KNOWING I AM OUT OF WORK. I WOULD THINK IT WOULD HELP US BY EVERYONE KNOWING WHO'S OUT, WHETHER IT BE PUTTING OUT THE WORD TO A COMPANY, RECEIVING CALLS FROM OTHER BROTHERS FOR SUPPORT, OR EVEN HELPING FINANCIALLY. I WAS TOLD THAT ITS NOT UP THERE, BECAUSE WE DONT WANT THE COMPANIES TO SEE. THEY SEEM TO KNOW ANYWAY, BY PICKING+CHOOSING WHO THEY WANT TO HIRE. I LOOKED AT THE LIST BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND HAVE SENT MONEY TO SEVERAL OUT OF WORK BROTHERS. IN A FEW WEEKS I WILL HAVE 30-YEARS WITH LOCAL#1 , AND IT BOTHERS ME THAT THERE ARE MANY BROTHERS OUT THERE THAT DONT REALIZE THE BLOOD+SWEAT  SHED BY OUR CURRENT +PAST UNION  MEMBERS,AND THEIR GRANDFATHERS,FATHERS+UNCLES ETC. ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN TO ONLY A HANDFUL OF MEETINGS THE LAST COUPLE YEARS, JUST GOING TO UNION MEETING DOES NOT MAKE YOU A GOOD UNION MAN. I CONSIDER MYSELF A GOOD UNION MAN SINCE I WAS ABOUT 10-YEARS OLD. MY FATHER (RIP) WAS ON STRIKE IN THE EARLY 70'S AND EXPLAINED TO ME WHY!! I UNDERSTOOD, AND  COULD NOT GO ON VACATIONS, USE THE PHONE, AC, SIGN UP FOR CAMPS,  ETC. AND HELPED MY FATHER TAR ROOFS ON WEEKENDS +WEEKDAYS WHEN SCHOOL WAS OVER. BUT IN THE END IT WAS ALL WORTH IT.   SO UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE WHAT YOU HAVE BECAUSE OF THE UNION. IT JUST SEEMS THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY GOOD UNION MEN OUT OF WORK.

dear brothers and sisters,
I recently passed and applied for the dob license, after waiting a year ,i was told i was denied.I was denied based on companys i worked for not responding to letters the city sent out to them. You have to submit your work history, then a letter is needed from each company verifying that you indeed worked there, they want a letter from your last supervisor. They are asking the impossible, some supervisors are retired or have moved on.A letter from human resources does not qualify. This is insane and i am going to fight it somehow ,even if i have to call the news.At this point is feels like a scam,350 to take a test, then you sit with an investigator who goes over your paperwork ,says ok ,then a year later they tell you sorry,we sent letters to so and so company and they did not respond so no license for you!If I find a way to appeal this I hope that some of you will join possibly in a class action complaint.they also want 5 years of steady experience and due to lay offs some of you will be disqualified due to that, also running a car does not count as experience. As far as i can see ,the only person going to qualify ,is the guy or gal who has worked at one company since 1979.Lets get together on this and tell our business agents, our congresspeople, the 6 oclock news that new york city is scamming and taking peoples hard earned money and asking for stupid and  impossible employment verifications.Your social security and tax returns should be enough!! thanks,in solidariy ,your twisted sista, liz nielsen

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS

Comments:
On this Christmas Eve as I anticipate the joy of watching my daughters fall asleep awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus, I cannot help but sit back and realize how lucky I am to be a member of Local One.
Since its inception years ago, I have always happily donated to the Local One Christmas Gift Card program, always making myself and my family feel good about making sure an out of work Brother and Sisters family had a Merry Christmas and always saying to myself as we all do that we were thankful that we were able to help. But as luck has it this year it was my turn to receive these cards. Being out of work for the past three months really sucks but unforunately we have to deal with what we have to deal with. If it wasn't for the extreme generosity of the Brothers and Sisters of this Union, my family's Christmas wouldn't have been as fulfilling as it is.
I cannot tell you how much it means to me and my family when we received this kind of help from our Union, the very generous collections from my Brothers and Sisters in green and the phone calls that I receive from all of you means a lot to me.
Gary, Freddie and especially my shop steward Eddie Moore who calls me weekly to see how I am.
God Bless you all and Merry Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas!!!!

As you may or may not know, we currently have The Elevator Safety Bill A08359 which is legislation that would require Licensing of mechanics and contractors that work on or inspect elevators, escalators and people movers in the State of New York. It would also require conveyance inspections and create an elevator board of regulations to oversee and enforce the law.

You may have seen or heard recently in the news, there is currently no such law in the State of New York regulating elevator safety, so regardless of training and or experience any unqualified person with a set of tools can pose as an elevator contractor or mechanic in the State of New York with disastrous results! I recently viewed a press conference about an elevator accident in which a woman terribly injured. The Brooklyn DA stated that the person working on the elevator violated many industry safety standards, disabled safety features of the elevator and then fled the scene after crushing the woman with the elevator. (see the video of the press conference below) I also read an article this week by Scott Stringer (Manhattan Borough President) in which he wrote 36,000 people that's right 36,000 people have been rescued from elevators the by New York Fire Department In 2011 alone!!! Many with injuries or dead, add that to the number of people rescued by Elevator and building personnel and the level of incident is astronomical!!!

The Elevator Safety bill will reduce those numbers and create a safer mode of travel for the Elevator Escalator riding public in the State of New York!

The Elevator Safety Bill A08359 is in the assembly and sponsored by Assemblyman Keith Wright and Co Sponsored by Assemblywoman Annie Rabbit and
Assemblyman Rory Lancman.

If you, your family and or friends live, work, visit or plan to visit New York this could effect you!!! Please take a few moments and email these Assembly members and your local representatives, and please share this email with your friends and family and Help Make New York Safer!!!!!

PLEASE MAKE THIS CAUSE ONE OF YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

THE NYS ASSEMBLY GOES INTO SESSION JANUARY 4TH, MAKE SURE YOU EMAIL ASSEMBLYMEMBERS KEITH LT WRIGHT, ANNIE RABBIT AND RORY LANCMAN.
LET THEM KNOW WE NEED BILL A08359, THE ELEVATOR SAFETY BILL PASSED NOW!!!!!
