Suffolk County Plans Police Officer Exam; Top Salary is $111G

Posted: Wednesday, January 21, 2015 12:00 am

Suffolk County has scheduled an exam for Police Officer and Police Officer (Spanish Speaking). The eligible lists will be used to fill vacancies in the Suffolk County Police Department and in town and village police departments within the county. The application deadline is April 1, and the fee is $100.

Starts at $42,000

Starting salary for the SCPD is $42,000 a year, rising in increments to $111,506. Salaries vary for other jurisdictions.

Police Officers patrol an assigned area in a radio-equipped car, on a motorcycle or on foot to prevent and discover crimes. They answer calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, domestic disturbances and other misdemeanors or felonies. They direct traffic, enforce traffic law, and arrest traffic violators. At scenes of a crime, they administer first aid, conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, obtain witnesses and make arrests. They testify in court on arrests they make. Police Officers perform related work as required.

To qualify for the test, you must be a high school graduate or hold an equivalency diploma. You also must be a U.S. citizen.

You must be at least 19 years 6 months old by June 13, when the test is scheduled. Eligibility for appointment begins at age 20. If you turn 35 by June 13, you may not take the test. The only exception is for military veterans who have been on active duty. Veterans may deduct up to six years of such duty from their age.

You must have a New York State driver’s license by the time you are appointed.

Applicants will undergo a medical exam and a physical-fitness test. Requirements are listed on the job announcement, which can be found at http://goo.gl/EXM5Fb.

Hiring by Local Forces

There are no residency requirements to compete in this examination. In accordance with the State Civil Service Law, a town or village may request that current residents (those who have lived there for at least 90 days before certification) be given preference for hiring. Candidates may be required to indicate when they are being considered for appointment whether or not they will become a resident of the locality.

The written test for Police Officer and Police Officer (Spanish Speaking) will be the same one, given in English. The multiple-choice exam will assess your cognitive abilities, work style and background information. The results of the written test will be zone-scored, meaning they will rounded to 100, 95, 90, etc., creating a significant number of tie scores.

A Candidate Preparation Guide and a Candidate Tutorial will be posted at http://goo.gl/GYcNe2 beginning on or about April 15 and will remain available until June 13. You will need an access code, which will be e-mailed or mailed when you apply.

If you pass the written test, you will be called as needed for the medical evaluation, a psychological/personality evaluation and the physical-fitness test. Applicants for Police Officer (Spanish Speaking) will be called for an oral language-proficiency test. All applicants may undergo a background investigation that includes a polygraph exam.

Application Fee

Each application must be accompanied by a $100 fee. Make your check or money order payable to the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service, and indicate the title of the exam and your Social Security Number on its face. If you wish to take both the Police Officer and Police Officer (Spanish Speaking) exams, only one fee is required. If you apply for Police Officer (Spanish Speaking), you will automatically be included in the Police Officer exam.

The application fee may be waived for Suffolk County residents who are veterans, auxiliary police, volunteer firefighters, volunteer EMTs and volunteer CERT members. The fee may also be waived if you are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household and for recipients of Medicaid, SSI, Public Assistance or those in a training program under the Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act administered by a state or local social-services agency.

If you apply online, you may pay the fee with a VISA or Mastercard. An additional charge of $1.95 will be assessed.

You may apply online at http://goo.gl/eZDX6v. Box 6100, Hauppauge, NY 11788-0099. Completed applications must be sent to the same address. Paper applications should be delivered via certified mail, return receipt
