First off, let me start by saying I'm all for a defense fund. But I have to ask, why not ask the working members for two to five cents an hour contribution instead of asking all members for $100 dollars a quarter. This would not present a burden to members out of work for one reason or another. This fund is being created to help ease burden and hardship for all members so it should be something more transparent.

Hearing due on Silverstein's bond bid

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

World Trade Center site developer Larry Silverstein faces a public hearing next week in his bid for $3.4 billion in taxexempt Liberty Bonds.

But he has yet to win vital support for his plans from Mayor Bloomberg.

The mayor said again yesterday that he's "not a believer" in the need for 10 million square feet of office space and also fears the prolonged construction of four more office towers will scare off prospective tenants.

In an interview on WABC-AM radio, he said, "I am very strong on getting a lot of these things going simultaneously rather than consecutively, because it is harder to rent space when people say, 'This is going to be a building site for the next 15 years.'"

Bloomberg has proposed making housing a big part of the mix at the site.

In a further challenge to Silverstein, Bloomberg added, "Maybe one developer can do it all, and maybe different developers can do [it] simultaneously."

Silverstein, who is finishing up the 52-story 7 World Trade Center building, wants to put the Liberty Bonds toward four of his five other proposed office towers.

Bloomberg wants the two towers at the southeast corner, "which sort of connect the ... site to the rest of the downtown," to get underway "at the same time as the others."

Silverstein, who is due to start the 1,776-foot Freedom Tower this spring, says in his bond application that he'd spend the proceeds on construction at the site through 2015.

Next Thursday's hearing is before the board of the New York City Industrial Development Agency. The panel will later vote on the bond package, if it's first approved by the city and state.

In an analysis released late yesterday, the agency said the four towers will cost a total of about $7.5 billion and hold 35,200 officer workers.

Bettina Damiani, project director of Good Jobs New York, said Silverstein's stated assumption that he'll lease 40% of each tower in the first year is "overly optimistic." She questioned whether the bonds are a "wise investment for taxpayers."

Early this week, Silverstein said, "There's little doubt in my mind that we will work this through and get it [bond approval] done."

'TOWER'-ING ENTHUSIASM

By TOM TOPOUSIS

Construction began yesterday on the largest new office tower in lower Manhattan since 9/11 — the $2.4 billion headquarters for Goldman Sachs that officials say will jumpstart downtown's struggling revival.

"I'm very optimistic about the future here in lower Manhattan," Gov. Pataki said after a ground-breaking at the Battery Park City site next to Ground Zero.

"This was obviously an important step, a major milestone, but we expect many more to come."

Pataki was joined by Mayor Bloomberg, Sens. Charles Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, along with top honchos from Goldman Sachs and dozens of development officials.

"If Goldman builds here, others will come. And we need others to come," said Schumer, who has been adamant about the need to rebuild all 10 million square feet of office space lost at the World Trade Center.

Goldman Sachs won extra state and city incentives as part of a $115 million tax package to stay downtown in addition to the $1.6 billion in tax-exempt Liberty Bonds already awarded to the project.

ah,the day after thanksgiving, you know that day, every where you look around the house is a Christmas list, bathroom mirror,on the telephone,on my pillow, you name it ,these kids got the bases covered. But i am not even thinking about Christmas,I am thinking about people in Louisiana,I am thinking about my heating bill and i am thinking about this  upcoming vote. Its needed, its overdue and the outline talked about at the meeting seems generous. One of the most important  issues to me is doing for the other locals what they did for us during the lockout,I believe and correct me if I am wrong, that local 8 was looking to send us 50,000 but the members voted to send us 100,000.!!!!!.We need to be ready to return the favor no doubt but here is where the bitterness comes in and I'm not sure my union officials understand this. With all due respect the people that were locked out voted no to this contract. The people who were working and not really affected by the lockout other then a measly assessment  and  were offered a 2000 dollar (taxed bribe )voted yes. They voted yes ,after being on the front lines everyday, accepting my fate to stay out and fight the fight,These working brothers handed over everything we and all the other locals were fighting for.So please tell me  that if this passes and we go through this again that only I and my locked out cohorts will vote  on what directly affects us.Cause I will fight the fight,I will give more then a hundred to the fund ,but don't sell me out.You build this war chest and you let us fight. Please in no way take this as a want for a strike, strikes are bad,but if they lock me out again and this time want to install a microchip in my head,Please just let me loose.Brothers and sisters save your money, pay down your bills, and someone have bail money ready for me......just kidding. And while we are at it,we might as well allocate some money for the pac fund, cause I dont plan on having a bake sale anytime soon.Happy Holidays to all.

Happy Thanksgiving!

As we gather today with our family and friends, let us collectively be thankful for what we have: our families, our health , our love. Most of us are in good shape and have been spared personal tragedy. Let us give thanks to God for what we do have and renew our pledge to not only make our world a better place in the coming year but to share our bounty with others who may not have been as fortunate.

We wish all a very happy Thanksgiving! And Why Not

This message was taken from a local paper on Long Island, written by editor David J. Wilmott.

NO matter where today brings you , please be grateful for what you have, and the opportunity to live in a  country that affords us many things. To all my brothers and sisters from all over the IUEC , may God Bless You and your family.

Lets never forget the many veterans before and those ( over 2000) who have given their lives in battle to fight terrorism.

In solidarity Brother Brian Link " a very thankful brother"

Brothers and sisters,

First, I'd like to congratulate all those who passed the mechanics exam!

Second, I'd like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. I'd also like to ask everyone who reads this to say a little prayer for our brave troops here and abroad.

I heard GM is laying off 30k workers in assembly and parts facilities. The Blue collar workers are paying the price for corporate ineptness again. A prayer goes out to each and everyone of them.

Dear Brothers & Sisters ,

Members of the building trades have contacted us to let us know that "Best Buy" is building their Peekskill/Cortlandt store non-union. They wanted us to know they will be leafleting three of the other "Best Buy" locations in Westchester this weekend. Attached is the flyer they will be handing out.

You can help by letting "Best Buy" know that you are unhappy with their decision not to use your fellow brothers and sisters to do the job. Their construction practices will jeopardize the wages and benefits of construction workers in Westchester and Putnam Counties.

Visit the web address below to tell your friends about this.
