Electricians Recruit Apprentices

 

Hauppauge, NY (February 13, 2014) -

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry of Nassau and Suffolk Counties will conduct a recruitment from March 5, 2014 through February 18, 2015 for 40 electrician apprentices, five electrician (house or residential) apprentices, and five electrical maintenance technician apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained, in person only, at 370 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the first and third Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  All applications must be received no later than 12:00p.m. on February 18, 2015.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old - proof is required at the time of application.
  • Must be a high school graduate or hold a New-York-State-approved high school equivalency diploma - proof is required at the time of application.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by a physical exam paid for by the sponsor - before final acceptance.
  • Must have taken and passed Elementary Algebra, New York State Math I, or freshman High School Regents Math - proof is required at the time of application.
  • Must be a resident of Nassau or Suffolk County for at least 12 months prior to the date of application - proof is required at the time of application.
  • Must receive a qualifying score on the NJATC/AIR Aptitude Test administered by the JATC.
  • Must be interviewed by the JATC.
  • Must submit to and pass a substance abuse test paid for by the JATC - before final acceptance.
  • Must have reliable transportation to get to and from work at job sites anywhere within the geographical area (Nassau & Suffolk counties).
  • Must attest to the following criteria, as indicated on the application:
    • Able to climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, poles and towers of various heights.
    • Able to crawl and work in confined spaces, such as attics, manholes and crawlspaces.
    • Able to read, hear and understand instructions and warnings.

Plumbers Recruit Apprentices

 

Long Island City, NY (May 08, 2014) -

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers Local Union #1 will conduct a recruitment from June 9, 2014 through June 20, 2014 for 100 plumber apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications must be obtained in person by the applicant at the Local Union #1 Training Center, 37-11 47th Avenue, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the recruitment period.  Applications will be available for 10 business days or until 1,000 applications have been issued, whichever comes first. All applicants are required to bring a form of positive proof of identification. Only one application will be issued per person.

All applications must be returned by hand to the Training Center office between Monday, July 28, 2014 and Friday, August 1, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. A receipt will be issued to the person who returns the completed application.

Upon return, the application must be fully completed and submitted with a photocopy of a high school diploma and an official sealed transcript from a state-approved public or private high school. The transcript must reflect a minimum of four calendar years of high school work. Scores in both Sequential Math I and Sequential Math II must be at least a 70 or a "C." In lieu of the required math course grades, the Committee will accept a high school diploma and transcript accompanied by a TABE 10 (Test of Adult Basic Education) math test (Complete Battery - Level A) with a "Total Math" score of 10 or higher.

In lieu of a four-year high school diploma, the Committee will accept a photocopy of a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma issued by the Department of Education of the state in which the test was taken, with a transcript confirming a GED exam or TASC exam math score of 550 or higher.

International Academic Credentials must be accompanied by a World Education Services (www.wes.org) course-by-course evaluation report in a sealed envelope.

There is a $25.00 application fee for the apprenticeship program. Applicants must submit a $25.00 money order with the application. No cash or checks will be accepted.  Applicants may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of entry into the apprenticeship. Proof of age will be required after selection and prior to indenture (proof may consist of a birth certificate, passport, or driver's license).
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.A.
  • Must take a New York State Department of Labor aptitude test. There is no testing fee for the aptitude test.
  • Must appear for a personal interview, if selected.
  • Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Painters Recruit Apprentices

 

Long Island City, NY (April 30, 2014) -

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for District Council #9 will conduct a recruitment from May 30, 2014 through June 12, 2014 for 50 painter, decorator, and paperhanger apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained, in person only, from District Council #9 JAATF, 45-15 36th Street, Long Island City, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  The sponsor will be distributing 500 applications beginning Friday, May 30 and continuing for a period of 10 business days or until all applications have been exhausted, whichever comes first.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC).

• Perform technical work in the inspection of construction alteration and safety of elevators, escalators, amusement rides and other related devices for compliance of codes and regulations 
• Witness safety tests on high-speed elevators. 
• Perform spot-checks and audits on elevator escalator and amusement  devices 
• Investigate citywide accidents and complaints of adverse inspection reports. 
• Review and examine plans for elevator installations or alterations for conformity with the New York City Building Code and make reports or objections. 
• Answer contractor and property owner inquiries regarding the New York City Building Code as it applies to elevator construction. 

Salary is 51,936

Three years of experience as described in “1" above, and two years of education from an accredited college or university accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), technical school or trade school approved by a state’s Department of Education in courses in or directly related to the installation, repair or design of elevators; or 
3. Satisfactory completion of the three-year apprenticeship elevator inspection program approved by the Commissioner of the Department of Buildings and the Commissioner of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services and either two years of experience as described in “1" above or two years of education as described in “2" above; or 
4. A license as a professional engineer or a registration as an architect valid in the State of New York.

Laborers Recruit Apprentices

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Construction and General Building Laborers, Local Union #79, will conduct a limited recruitment from April 17, 2014 through April 30, 2014 for 100 skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

The recruitment for Local Union #79 will be offered online from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., every business day, during the recruitment period.  The recruitment will be offered for 10 business days or until 1,000 applicants are reached, whichever comes first.  Applicants who do not have Internet access may visit their local library or call 311 and ask for the nearest New York State Career Center.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the start of the program.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).

Construction and General Building Laborers’ Local 79 and the Mason Tenders’ Training Fund are proud to announce the upcoming online apprenticeship recruitment for 1000 applicants.

Ironworkers Recruit Apprentices

 

Astoria, NY (February 13, 2014) -

The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Ironworkers, Local Union #40 & #361, will conduct a recruitment from March 20, 2014 through May 22, 2014  for 100 ironworker (outside) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will be available at Local Union #40 & #361, 35-23 36th Street, Astoria, NY from 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. every Thursday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  All applications must be picked up in person.  A $25.00 testing fee will be required at the time of pick up (money order only - payable to Ironworkers Local 40 & 361). Please note, you may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

At the time of pick up, applicants must also provide valid photo identification, proof of age, and proof of high school diploma or equivalent. Failure to appear at any test will result in disqualification and forfeiture of the filing fee.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required at the time of application.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Proof will be required at the time of application.
  • Must take and pass the Ironworkers' written aptitude test.
  • Must submit to a drug test at the expense of the sponsor.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work of an ironworker.
  • Must take and pass a physical task test, which includes:
    • Climbing up and down a 35-foot column.
    • Standing on a platform 14 feet in the air and pulling a 75-pound bucket up and down twice.
    • Raising and lowering 2,000 pounds of steel 40 inches into the air with a chain fall in less than one minute and thirty seconds.
    • Holding a 35-pound impact wrench at 14 different bolt locations for seven seconds each.

  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by signed "Affidavit for Physical Performance" form. Such work may include:
    • Performing all phases of work in the construction industry, which includes working with hand and power tools, and being exposed to loud noise, hazardous machinery, hazardous voltages and respiratory irritants.
    • Prolonged standing, climbing, walking, and repeated squatting, stretching and bending.
    • Working under extreme temperatures ranging from 0 degrees (outside work in the winter) to extreme heat in summer. Additionally, everyday work may be at such temperatures and in confined areas where movement is greatly limited.

RESIDENCY: To fulfill the standard residency requirements, each candidate for open competitive examination must have been a bona fide resident and dweller of Nassau County for at least one year immediately preceding the advertised date of examination and maintain that residency until appointed from the eligible list established as a result of the examination. (A candidate's residency will be investigated and verified before appointment.)

DUTIES:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Maintains security and order, patrols an assigned post, and assures proper inmate behavior at the County Correctional Center; performs related duties as required.
COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, the duties involve stress and some personal danger, and require the exercise of judgment and physical ability in maintaining security and order. Per Article 2, Section 2.10 of the Criminal Procedure Law, an incumbent of this position is designated as Peace Officer, which involves the use of firearms. Work shifts rotate on a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week basis.
TYPICAL DUTIES
*1. Patrols and checks the yard and grounds, as well as tiers, cells, and corridors of Correctional Center buildings.
*2. Visually observes surroundings, looking for any unusual, suspicious, or dangerous circumstances.
*3. Listens for unusual sounds, such as change in noise level, arguments, call for help, cry of fire, etc., to detect and prevent possible security or safety problems.
*4. Checks odors to detect the presence of smoke, marijuana, alcohol, flammable liquids, and other contraband and/or dangerous materials.
*5. Monitors the number of inmates in area and enters count in Log Book and/or activity sheets to record inmate movement.
*6. Counts, checks names, and escorts and supervises inmates to and from cell blocks, recreational activities, infirmary, showers, visitors' area, work assignments, court, etc., to prevent disorder, fighting, or breaches of security.
*7. Inspects and searches inmate quarters for drugs, weapons, or other contraband, and checks sanitary conditions.
*8. Strip searches or pat-frisks inmates to locate contraband.
*9. Checks visitors, cars, and trucks entering or leaving the institution for contraband.
*10. Checks doors, windows, bars, gates, locks, and other security equipment to make sure they are operational and have not been tampered with.
*11. Locks and unlocks cells and access doors, using mechanical and electrical devices.
*12. Ensures that inmates have proper clothing and equipment, and arranges for replacements as needed.
*13. Physically separates inmates during, or to prevent, physical confrontations.
*14. Calls for assistance to control incidents by sounding personal alarm, taking phone off hook, or using some other signal.
*15. Uses chemical agents, protective equipment, restraining devices, baton, and firearms, as directed by superior officer.
16. Guides and instructs inmates in their personal care, social behavior, and habits.
17. Reads and explains to inmates the rules and regulations governing their conduct, as required.
18. Completes standard forms, reports, and log books, recording necessary information, as required.
19. Upon completion of five years of permanent service as a Correction Officer, incumbent may assist in conducting various investigations as directed by the Sheriff, as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be met on or before the date of the written test:
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
AGE: Candidates must not be less than 18 years of age and must not have reached their 70th birthday on the date of the written test. Eligibility for appointment will not begin until a candidate has reached his/her 21st birthday and will terminate when a candidate reaches his/her 70th birthday. Time spent in military service, as defined in Section 243 of the Military Law may be deducted from actual age up to a maximum of 6 years.
(Veterans: If you have reached your 70th birthday by the date of the test you must submit your DD214 - separation papers with your application.)
EDUCATION: Candidates must be graduates of a senior high school or must possess a high school equivalency diploma before their names can be certified for appointment.
NOTE: Proof of claimed education will be required at the start of the background investigation.
LICENSE: A valid New York State Driver License will be required at the time of appointment
CITIZENSHIP: CANDIDATES MUST BE UNITED STATES CITIZENS AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:
1. Applying written information in a correctional services setting - These questions are designed to evaluate the candidates' ability to read, interpret and apply rules, regulations, directives, written narratives and other related material. The candidates are required to read a set of information, and to appropriately apply the information to situations similar to those typically experienced in a correctional services setting. All the information needed to answer the questions asked concerning the situations presented is contained in the rules, regulations, etc. which are cited. 
2. Observing and recalling facts and information - These questions are designed to test how well the candidates can observe and recall information presented.
3. Preparing written material - These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately, and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences. 
4. Understanding and interpreting written material - These questions test how well you comprehend written material. You will be provided with brief reading selections and will be asked questions about the selections. All the information required to answer the questions will be presented in the selections; you will not be required to have any special knowledge relating to the subject areas of the selections.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, DRUG TESTING AND FINGERPRINTING: According to Civil Service Law and/or policy of this Commission, a background investigation (which may include a polygraph examination), substance abuse screening and fingerprint check is required. Each candidate will be required to provide a waiver and release permitting the Commission to disclose to the candidates current employer any positive test results. The Division of Criminal Justice Services requires each fingerprint search request to be accompanied by a fee. This fee must be submitted by the candidate. The fee is usually $75.00.
