Last Chance to File For Mount Vernon Firefighter Exam

By SARAH DORSEY | Posted: Monday, January 27, 2014 5:30 pm

The City of Mount Vernon has extended the deadline to Jan. 29 to register for its open-competitive Firefighter exam #60-701. The test will be given on Saturday, March 8, and the location has not yet been announced. The position pays between $30,816 and $80,708, and females are urged to apply.

Candidates must be 17½ years old on the date of the exam, and proof of birth date will be required. There is no maximum age limit. Height and weight must be proportional, and eyesight must be 20/100 or better in each eye without corrective lenses.

Filing Fees

A non-refundable money order of $25 for Mount Vernon residents or $50 for non-residents is required, but a waiver is available at the Civil Service Office for those who are unemployed and responsible for the support of a household or on certain other forms of public assistance.

Candidates must be residents of Westchester County for at least three months immediately before the exam, and preference will be given to residents of Mount Vernon.

A high school diploma is not required, but candidates must pass a written exam that tests basic principles of science involved in firefighting. They’ll be asked about how various mechanical devices work, such as gears, pulleys, levers, hand tools and gauges. Some basic geometry and arithmetic will be required, but simple calculators may be used.

A make-up exam can be requested by active-duty military personnel, by participants who observe the Sabbath, and by others who require an alternate test date.

Physical Testing

Candidates must pass a physical strength and agility test which will require them to climb an aerial ladder, pull a length of hose, hoist a 50-pound weight onto and off of a platform using a rope, and other running and climbing tasks. Most are ranked by speed.

Free preparation classes for both the written and physical exams will be offered to all approved applicants.

More details can be found on the web at: http://bit.ly/1eYnxHb or by calling the Civil Service Office at (914) 665-2357 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Applications are available at any of Mount Vernon’s three firehouses, at the Civil Service Office, or online at: www.cmvny.

com. A guide to the written test can be found at: www.cs.ny.gov/testing/localtestguides.cfm.

Posted: Friday, December 27, 2013 12:00 am

The city is giving walk-in exams in January for the position of Police Officer with the New York Police Department. No preregistration is required. The application fee is $40.

Max $91G With Fringes

To find the days and times the exam is being given, visit www.nypdrecruit.com. The test also will be given in future months; check the website at the beginning of each month for details.

Police recruits start at $41,975. Officers receive periodic raises until they hit top pay after 5½ years. Top base pay at that point is $76,488. The city says officers at that level can expect $90,829, including base pay, longevity pay, holiday pay, uniform allowance and average night differential. Overtime is not included in that calculation.

Benefits include 10 vacation days to start, rising to 27 days after five years; unlimited sick leave; medical, prescription, dental and eyeglass coverage; an annuity fund; and half-pay retirement after 22 years.

Police Officers perform general police duties and related work. They patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle; apprehend suspects; intervene with crimes in progress, aided cases, complaints, emotionally disturbed persons, etc.; respond to and investigate vehicular accidents; investigate offenses; interact with prisoners; operate and maintain patrol vehicles; issue summonses; obtain information regarding incidents by interviewing witnesses, victims, and/or complainants; safeguard and voucher found, seized or recovered property; provide information to the public; handle situations involving maltreated, abused, or missing children; interact with juveniles; prepare forms and reports; testify in court; and perform related work.

As a Police Officer, you will be required to work Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, nights and to work rotating tours, change tours or work overtime.

Typical Conditions

Some of the physical activities you will perform and environmental conditions you will experience are working outdoors in all kinds of weather; walking and/or standing in an assigned area during a tour; driving or sitting in a patrol car during a tour while remaining alert; running after a fleeing suspect; climbing stairs; carrying an injured adult with assistance; gripping persons to prevent escape; detecting odors such as those caused by smoke or gas leaks; engaging in hand-to-hand struggles to subdue suspects and restraining them with handcuffs; being physically active for prolonged periods of time; understanding verbal communication over the radio with background noise; reading and writing under low light conditions; carrying or wearing heavy equipment; and wearing a bullet-resistant vest.

In order to qualify, you must have by the date you are appointed either 60 college semester credits with a cumulative index of at least 2.0; or a four-year high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of honorable full-time military service.

You must be at least 17½ years old to take the test, and you may not be appointed until you are 21. You must be under 35 on the date you take the exam The only exception involves full-time military duty; you may deduct up to six years from your age to compensate for service time.

You must be a citizen when you are appointed, and have a New York State driver’s license.

You will undergo medical, psychological, physical-fitness and drug screenings if you pass the test. The NYPD will conduct a background investigation. You will be disqualified if you have criminal convictions, a poor employment record, a less-than-honorable discharge or a conviction for domestic violence.

Residency Standards

NYPD officers are required to live in the city or in Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland or Putnam counties.

The multiple-choice test, given on a computer terminal, will include questions on reading comprehension, writing ability, sensitivity to problems, facility at memorization, putting information in the proper order, inductive and deductive reasoning, spatial orientation and visualization.

A 70-percent score is required to pass. A five-point New York City Residency Credit will be added to passing scores of test-takers who remain residents of the city from the date they take the test until the date the eligible list is established. You may apply for residency credit after that date.

Selective certification is also available for candidates who speak a foreign language.

To take the test, simply show up at one of the city testing centers at 2 Lafayette St., 17th floor, in Manhattan, or 210 Joralemon St., 4th floor, in Brooklyn. You will be given application materials there. You can pay the application fee with a money order, bank card, prepaid debit card or credit card. Brothers and Sisters ,with contract negotiations ongoing ,keep in  mind the importance of protecting our work! while hoisting concessions could get us a raise ,what will we negotiate with once we run out of give backs? that's right wages will be almost all that's left. over last few contracts weve lost a LOT of our work , which eventually will affect us all. maintaining our health care is #1, pension increase should be a strong second , don't know about you guys I love our union but would like to be able to retire one day. lets stick together , its early and we do not need to settle for anything at this time, construction is going to be a sbuysy as ever ! if we cant get a good contract NOW then WHEN?

In reference to our upcoming contract. Having family in the Medical field and seeing hard evidence of what is coming up down the line for Medical Insurance. We have to do every thing we can to maintain our insurance and make sure there are no give backs on this. What is coming down the line in a few years is not very pretty. Once we lose it, its gone for GOOD. My only other thought on the contract is the pension credits, After attending the retirement seminar, and actually learning from the source, unless you have a LOT of years credit, once you take the deductions, there is not a lot of money left in the check you are going to get. You are going to need at least 75% of your take home pay and money in the bank just to maintain your life style. Just my thoughts.
