I will try this again.  I'm pleased that the ex local three guys are banding together with there pension issues . however I had hoped to hear from some local one operators who are facing a similar pension fate if they are unable to return to the field. I'm not getting the outpouring of help I had expected from our NY leadership or for that matter at the international level , each one points the finger at each other. Not very helpful and I'm sure they wished I would go away but that's not going to happen. I have worked to hard to give that money away i would rather give it to a lawyer in fees just on principle. In union there is strength. PS it is absolutely critical that you read your proposed constitution every line and sometimes between them!

I want to commend brother Roy Versace in reference to his informational post. Regardless of where any member came from , we should always reach out to one another, strength is truly in numbers. CORRECT INFORMATION IS KNOWLEDGE!!

Please share this info regarding missing pension $$ ( Local 3 IBEW) with anyone who can benefit from it. I am extremely proud of any UNION member who is involved! We all have a choice to be involved and make a difference!

I am always happy to read about "future" work as noted in Brother Moore's post earlier (Jersey City). I will even be more happy when this work comes to fruition so we can clear our benches ( 56 operators, 50 Journeymen, 28 Apprentices).

Please read the January 2007 Elevator Constructor, after all we all pay for it. Get a pulse on whats happening all over the I.U.E.C.

Looking forward to seeing everyone @ the next scheduled union meeting  in January. PLEASE PLEASE read the revised constitution/bylaws paperwork. This is VERY VERY important, please understand it, read it comprehend it. Any questions ?? Call anyone that was on the constitution/bylaws committee.

BE INFORMED BE EDUCATED BE INVOLVED!!!!!

Who's union? ITS OUR UNION! STAND UP!

Thanks for reading Brother Brian Link

Brothers & Sisters,

You know, although I have never met the man, I have been reading Brother Brian Links posts for the last few years and although by the time I got to the end of them I might have needed to shave a couple of times, his thoughts were always in this union how we could make it better and to always make sure that we always knew what was going on. One thing I could not agree with him more, especially, now more than ever, is to be involved and attend our union meetings.

If you have problems, gripes or complaints, do not take them to the shanty, the hangout, top of cars or the bars, take them to the meeting.

The last meeting spoke volumes of how the membership felt on certain agendas. I am sure that the following meetings will bring about more change that is sorely needed.

Do not wait until the next day asking your fellow brother or sister "what happened" in last nights meeting. BE THERE !!  HEAR IT !!  KNOW IT !!

The future is coming, be a part of it, we need it, you know it, see you there January 28th !!

Thank you for listening

IN RE Local #3 International Pension
I finally received a response from Mr. Hill of the IBEW. He passed on my grievance to the Vice-President of the International Mr. Donald Siegel. If anyone else feels that they were also snookered again by Local #3, they can write to Mr. Siegel at: 500 Cherrington Parkway, Suite 325 Coraopolis, PA 15108 or fax him at (412)269-4963
If this letter writing campaign doesn't get any results, I will certainly be willing to join Mrs. Faranda and Mr. Grech in a class action suit. If anyone knows of any attorneys that specialize in this type of litigation and is willing to take on our case , please list their names on this web site.
To our Local #1 board members who read this site. I'm sure there are a few hundred brothers who are in the same predicament as us, we would appreciate if any of the lawyers that the IUEC keeps on retainer can guide us in what our rights are and what steps we should be taking.

The Building That Wouldn’t Go Away

THE dismantling of the Deutsche Bank building will begin this fall and — after careful, systematic deconstruction — it will be gone next year.”

The speaker was Gov. George E. Pataki. The next year was 2005.

He’s gone. The building isn’t.

After a long while in which the demolition deadline at the badly contaminated former Deutsche Bank building at 130 Liberty Street seemed to be elastic, officials now say its deconstruction by the end of this year is critical to progress at the rest of the World Trade Center site.

“Any delay imperils the overall time schedule that we’ve established,” Deputy Mayor Daniel L. Doctoroff said yesterday.

That means that the 41-story tower will have to start coming down at the rate of almost one floor a week, leaving little margin for further delay.

“We have been given assurances that the building will be down by the end of this year,” said Stephen Sigmund, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, “assurances we are trusting since that is absolutely the latest we can accept in order to meet the Port Authority’s aggressive and accountable timetable.”

Gov. Eliot Spitzer is “confident that the demolition will proceed according to schedule,” his press secretary, Christine Anderson, said. She added that the state “will take every precaution while the search for human remains continues.”

To date, 766 remains have been recovered from the building. The first through fifth floors remain to be searched.

Charles J. Maikish, the executive director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center, which has taken over the deconstruction project on what he called an “interim basis” from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, sounded optimistic.

“The planning, the engineering, the sequencing, the deconstruction method, the environmental controls have all been approved by the regulators and the work is going forward,” he said last week. (In fact, one could look over Mr. Maikish’s shoulder in his 29th-floor office at 1 Liberty Plaza and watch as workers removed aluminum sheathing from the columns at the top of the former bank tower.)

“A floor a week is achievable,” Mr. Maikish said.

But there is at least one big imponderable. The state is negotiating with Bovis Lend Lease, the construction manager for the demolition project, and its subcontractor, the John Galt Corporation. The companies are seeking more money to cover expenses they had not anticipated when they submitted their bid, since the decontamination has proved far more complex and demanding than had been envisioned.

At issue is roughly $30 million in extra expenses and how much of that should be borne by the contractors.

For a few days beginning on Dec. 11, only 15 or 20 of Galt’s workers, about 10 percent of the usual complement, were on the job. The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation called this a walkout and said negotiations would not resume until it ended. By Dec. 15, a full crew was back at work.

About the negotiations, Mary Costello, a senior vice president of Bovis, said yesterday, “Bovis believes that the parties, exercising good faith, can resolve the issue.”

At first glance, it may be hard to see why the fate of the main trade center is so closely linked to an old bank tower one block south. But the sites are tightly linked — underground — through the Vehicular Security Center that the Port Authority plans to build on the south side of Liberty Street, an area now partly occupied by 130 Liberty Street. A series of ramps in this center will lead to the network of subterranean roadways tying the new trade center together.

Before the authority can build the center, it must first construct a reverse bathtub, contained by large slurry walls, to keep the groundwater out. And before it can construct the bathtub, the authority must move a large sewer line that is now under Liberty Street.

The relocated sewer line and part of the slurry wall run about 180 feet through the 130 Liberty Street parcel. To compress work time as much as possible, the authority plans to begin building the sewer line and the slurry wall before the tower is completely demolished, then finish the work once the tower has been razed.

In 2010, a year before the Vehicular Security Center is scheduled to be complete, its ramps are to be used for trucks serving the final phase of construction at Silverstein Properties’ Tower 3 and Tower 4 on the main trade center site. That access is guaranteed by an agreement with Silverstein, which must, in turn, finish the towers by Dec. 31, 2011.

The timetable is tight. So no matter how confident officials sound in public, there are more than enough tenterhooks to go around.

      It's December 30, and I can't wait to say goodbye to 2006.

This was one hellish year for me. My dear mother passed in Feb.

My sweet and beautiful wife of 28 years,Kathleen died in June.

Depression, heart surgery and unemployment all added their monstrous weight to my burden of grief. My son has health problems. I was fired from my N.E.I.E.P. instructor's position

because of unfounded allegations, and still have not been given

my right to face my accuser. My favorite aunt died in early Dec.

I will be damned glad when that ball drops and 2007 is here.

On a different note a real bright spot of 2006,I went back to work! This time at a real company on a real job. I am at Fujitec

working on the N.Y.Times new bldg. A great boost for me was being welcomed into the gang, none of you will ever realize what

what you mean to me and the debt of gratitude I owe you all,

so let me say this to the Fuji crew at the Times, Thank you

I love you all, I look forward to 2007 and say to all of my I.U.E.C.

brothers and sisters from N.Y. to Hawaii god bless you, every one. A happy, healthy and prosperous new year to us all!!

As always,I am yours in solidarity

proud to be your loyal brother

What have you learned in 2006? We can all learn from one another. What works? What doesn't work? We need to realize as adults or even as children most people do the "best" they can with their knowledge they have on a specific issue or subject. Why is this a topic of discussion on a union website? One of my BIGGEST concerns facing Local 1 is our members being involved. More importantly however is our members being completely "educated" on all the issues. My parents always taught me to never "talk out of turn", first know the issues & be a good listener & ALWAYS BE INVOLVED in your community at home, your choice of faith and your choice of profession.

Things can always be better, they also can be worse. WHY do we wait til January every year to make positive changes? WHY do we wait until December every year to be kind and compassionate to others less fortunate then ourselves? WHY do we wait until a certain Thursday in November to be thankful?

WHY? Because change is very uncomfortable, we live within our own personal, spiritual and financial  " COMFORT ZONES".

Please as the New year approaches, wake up everyday & make a choice to be part of the solution , not the problem, give of yourself to others!

IS our union perfect? Are all our personal friends and family members perfect? I think we all know the answers to these 2 questions, but UNTIL we accept these people and conditions for who and what they really are, we will NEVER have the POWER or the ability to change them.

As always I will continue to be involved, educated and a extremely proud member of my family at work and my family at home .

God Bless & A Happy & Healthy New Year To All

            Respectfully submitted Brother Brian Link

I'm responding to Roy Versace's note on 12/28/06 concerning the "other union" which is with holding our International pension.
First off the full retirement that was promised at 58 went out the door and is now 65 years old for full pension. Due to us leaving before age 58. So now we also loose the International pension..
Do not forget that if you apply for pension before 65 yrs old you will loose $$ for every year prior to 65. I have 33years there and is now worth peanuts by today's standards.
May I suggest we the ones that came from there somehow contact each other and hire a lawyer to put in a claim for all of us together..After all that hundred dollar is ours not theirs. and a hundred dollars is better in our pocket not theirs.. By the way for those that came from Millar, why was this not mentioned in all the information that they posted and gave us prior to us making that choice..  They promised us the world and gave us $hit...

Doctors Try to Save 2 Year Old's Thumb

2006_12_macys.jpgA childhood phobia of escalators requires us to update yesterday's story about the 2 year old whose finger was partially severed by an escalator at Macy's Herald Square. The Post reports that 2 year old Michael Grateraux "underwent surgery Sunday night at Bellevue" in an attempt to keep his thumb. Other reports said that Grateraux stuck his thumb while riding an up escalator, but his mother Sandy Lopez tells a different story. From the Post:

Michael, his mom and five siblings [all visiting from Mississippi] were descending on a crowded escalator to the fourth floor when someone fell, knocking the little boy down and causing him to snare his thumb in the moving staircase, Lopez said.

She said doctors have told her that if his thumb isn't improved by Thursday, they will have to amputate. "His thumb is destroyed," she said. "Every time he wakes up, he cries in pain."

Poor, poor little Michael. We imagine Macy's on Christmas Eve to be a scary, crowded place. You might say, "Why not take the elevator with so many kids?" but we were at Macy's two weeks before Christmas and the elevators are ridiculous - we waited for 10 minutes to find an elevator that wasn't packed like sardines but no luck.

Last year, a little girl's finger was sliced off during an accident on the Macy's escalator - she was running up the stairs, tripped, and her finger was "caught under a metal plate." And in 2005, a group of schoolchildren and adults were caught in an escalator pile-up on the fairly steep escalator to the IMAX theaters at the Lincoln Square movie theater - a child's baggy pants caught a protruding screw AND someone pushed an emergency button.
