card number 1347 Comments: I read sister Liz Neilsons post and was very touched. I am extremely proud of all the members who donated .Before we sat down for dinner I read Liz Neilsons letter to my family, we all said a prayer for not only the Neilsons but for all the families struggling. I was personally grateful for the toys & gift cards that were donated at our holiday party we had at Schindler. I wanted to thank Fred Mccourt for all his time and effort and also for wonderful Sue down at the hall. God Bless them both ! The Holiday for most of us is a Happy Time, but for many it is no different then any other day. I feel very strongly that regardless of our choice of faith or beliefs, It comes down to a few things . Being kind and compassionate to others, stop and help those less fortunate then yourself.its not about you, please see the " Big Picture" Every week when you buy your groceries, put a few items aside for those who go to bed hungry. Most of all live your life to the fullest, wake up with great expectations, yes YOU can make a difference . On a UNION note, I would like to let all my brothers and sisters How PROUD I am to carry a Local One card. card number 7371 Comments: This year has been the worst year, and the light at the end of the tunnel doesn't look any brighter,Facing a possible eviction in the up coming weeks , Shopping ,gift giving were not on my list of priority's,but you know kids, they don't listen,This is how it goes it my house,"We may lose the house,go easy on the milk, and no. I have no money",Then my kids go O.k. here's my Christmas list and the things in red, mean I really want that"......... You see I have always been the bread winner and my kids think I am superwoman , You know, when a bike breaks or the bearing of the skateboard comes off, other kids say to there friends,I'll get a wrench from my dad's garage and my kids say... I"ll go get my mom's channel locks ,So when I said there would be no Christmas this year, they kind of didn't recognize the despair in my voice, and chalked it up to I was in a bad mood. Here I was telling them over and over that I was serious,There would be no Christmas this year, Then Sue (from the union hall),called and told me to pick up my care package from the toy drive.I didn't want to,I thought,What could somebody have donated that wouldn't look like it was donated, and how would they know what to get my son?Well, after pacing a bit,I went upstairs ( to the rooms)and got my sons gift, put together and labeled for me to know its mine.It was an envelope and on the way home,I peaked,I opened it and I had to pull over and catch my breath. It was a few gift cards, generous gift cards! that any 13 year old boy would love to receive. When I got home I showed my daughters what the local one members had given there little brother,my son, for Christmas and they said wow,why would they do such a thing?,and I said because we are family and that's what family does. I wrapped it and put in under my charlie brown tree, and my son said ''see Mom,you're always playing games'' and I just shook my head knowing it was another 11th hour save'.My deepest thanks to the family's who donated, and My deepest thanks to Sue for the extra touch in putting together and personalizing an age appropriate generous gift, Merry Christmas to all and to all a Goodnight.

card number 1179 Comments: Health insurance talks leave consumers scrambling
The possibility that Westchester County users of Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield may have to pay the full cost for certain doctors and hospitals after Dec. 31 has become an unwelcome holiday surprise. A number of consumers and benefit managers at area companies said they had no idea that four Westchester hospitals had warned Empire that they were pulling out of its network this month if the two sides could not reach a new contract. Most said the first word they had that a problem was brewing was when they read about it in The Journal News on Dec. 6. The newspaper reported that White Plains Hospital Center, Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow and Lawrence Hospital Center in Bronxville had set a Jan. 1 contract deadline. In October, Empire notified doctors in its network that if they held privileges only at those four hospitals, they would be dropped from the network if talks failed. Some consumers who signed up for Empire during recent enrollment drives said they should have been told about the negotiations and what was at stake. "That just doesn't seem fair to me. That just doesn't seem fair," said Carmela DiSalvatore of Hartsdale, a retired Verizon computer systems specialist. "If I didn't read it in the paper, how would I have known? If you're in negotiations, shouldn't you send out a letter to people?" Empire did send a letter to consumers this week informing them of the situation. Patients could use the four hospitals for emergencies and receive insurance coverage, the letter said, or patients could use other doctors and hospitals that remain in the Empire network. Donald J. Weiss, a retired White Plains police officer, said he wasn't happy about the chance that he may not be able to get treatment at the same city hospital where he had had two back surgeries. "This is the first time in 13 years that I've had to worry," said Weiss, 52, of Valhalla. "It's bad enough to have the health problem one has, but to have to deal with this. … It's a tremendous imposition on active and retired employees." Some doctors are telling their patients that they may not be in Empire soon. John Palmieri, a retired pharmacist in New Rochelle, said an eye specialist he was seeing in Mount Kisco for macular degeneration had warned him that Palmieri might have to find a new doctor. Palmieri, 83, was resigned to doing so. "It's a game they play, a game," he said of the contract talks. "Blue Cross puts you right on the edge and then sort of backs off." Last year, Empire and the network representing Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern wrangled over a new contract and let the old one expire in the process, for a single day. In 2004, United Healthcare and five other Westchester hospitals exchanged similar threats before reaching a contract by the deadline. "If the past is any precedent, at some point the negotiations will break through and there will be an agreement," said Charles J. Newman, a chartered life underwriter in Hawthorne. Negotiations also are continuing between CIGNA HealthCare and four other Westchester hospitals: Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt, Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle and Mount Vernon Hospital. Those hospitals have warned CIGNA that they will leave the network if a new contract cannot be reached before Jan. 1. Some local employers said they were frustrated about their inability to get more details from Empire for their workers and retirees. "They can't give us any answers at all," said Adriane Monaro Glass, director of human resources at Maryknoll Fathers in Ossining. Empire and Stellaris Health Network, the organization representing the four hospitals in the talks, have not commented in detail other than to say they're hopeful they can strike a deal. Medicare members enrolled in Empire's HMO and PPO Medicare Advantage plans are not affected because both sides have reached agreement on that part of the program. Empire has not said how many consumers are affected locally by the dispute. Some insurance brokers have said that business clients are calling them and asking about alternatives. Newman said he can scramble to get new coverage for employers of fewer than 50 workers, but larger ones are more difficult. Recent health insurance mergers in the New York market have reduced the pool of potential bidders for business, he said. "All this consolidation is not necessarily a good thing for consumers," Newman said. William P. Carroll, an Eastchester insurance broker who uses Empire personally, said he also has received calls from clients who are uneasy. As hospitals band together for more influence in negotiations with insurers, contract talks are more likely to go down to the wire. "I think, personally, you'll see more and more of this," Carroll said.
card number 14 Comments: The Toy Drive was a huge success. The total of kids that received gifts were about 50. We really hope that the toys put a smile on the kids face for at least one day. The members really came through and I am personally proud of our members for the way they responded!!!! I would like to let everyone know how hard Sue(office) worked to put all the toys together and really put her heart and soul into making sure everyone was treated fairly. THANKS SUE!!!! I hope that everyone has a safe and healthy Holiday season. PLEASE remember all of our members who are going through some difficult times and PLEASE remember all of our TROOPS all over the world who give us an opportunity to enjoy our holiday season. card number 1347 Comments: First of all my thoughts and prayers go out to Jamie Oliver for a full recovery! Secondly PLEASE PLEASE read the new draft of the "amended" constitution & by-laws. Please don't make the same mistake that so many members did and vote on something (our past contract) you didn't read and then complain. Be educated , Be informed and most of all get involved. Thirdly come to the meeting with all your questions & concerns. I am not concerned about the # of members who come to the vote, I just want the members who attend to UNDERSTAND what they are voting for! Look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting. Continue to work smart & work safe. Signed Brother Brian Link

card number 1347 Comments: I read today's Long Island Newsday and was quite "Impressed" . On page 23 their was a great story called Holiday Spirit. It went on to say 23 firefighters bring toys to Katrina Victims. It was a connection born of sorrow, but one that left holiday joy in it's wake. Twenty three NYC firefighters, bound by the losses they suffered on Sept 11th, drove 1200 miles recently to bring cheer to more then 100 children whose families are still struggling to rebuild their lives after Hurricane Katrina. Why do I write about this on a union website? Why? Because we all need to reach out to others less fortunate then us, wea re so Overwhelmed with the holidays , some of us forget those who don't have heat , food or a roof over their heads. Please all brothers and sisters or spouses reading this,GIVE to others , whether its time or just helping out. Regardless of your choice of faith, isn't it really about just being a good person? I am extremely grateful for all life has afforded me. Many of our own members are out of work, many of our neighbors are hungry. Find it in your heart to be COMPASSIONATE. Most of all wake up everyday and do your best to make a positive difference in LIFE. For all those interested members we will be having an extremely important meeting Thursday Dec 21st, same place same place, same channel. I would like to commend all the people who worked on the amended constitution and bylaws , I appreciate their hard work and effort. Bring yourself and a few members to the meeting . IT'S OUR UNION , if you don't take part in voting or the process you really shouldn't complain? See you at the vote. Please everyone reading this have a wonderful holiday and a Happy and healthy New Year. Once again thanks for reading . I remain as always very involved , educated and truly concerned member of our union. Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link
card number 1899 Comments: With the departure of one of our BA's, won't there be a special election to replace him? If this is so, why can't we wait until that mandatory election and add the dues vote to that ballot. Then, instead of a paper vote of the same 100 or so members that actually attend meetings, we can have everyone IN GOOD STANDING vote on this issue.
card number 1613 Comments: There was a post earlier from the wife of a Local One member regarding a raise in dues and an issue with the defense fund. The post would lead you to believe that the dues were being raised with no mention of a vote. I have not received the information as of yet. However, I have learned from Brothers on the job that the information sent was about a vote to increase the dues. Big difference! If the dues go up, it is because we decided to raise them. The reasons for the increase should be discussed at the meeting and each member will vote according to their position on the issue.
I apologize for any confusion
