I've been thinking about Brother McCourt's post regarding "change" (dated 5/26). The issues involved are very complex and to change just for the sake of change would be a mistake. Any changes that might come through a well thought out plan could be good. The post speaks of the other unions that represent Elevator Mechanics. There is the EE division of local 3 and local 237 Teamsters with the city. The CWA represents Elevator Mechanics in Verizon Buildings, their wage rates can be found in the Verizon contract. The TWU represents Elevator Mechanics in the subways. If you click the "more" button after the millwrights section you will find someone else claiming to work on escalators and moving sidewalks. We need to change to deal with these conditions and the non-union condition. We need a long term plan with with both long and short term goals. If we are to be considering breaking away from any national labor bodies, we should speak with local people from organizations that have already broken away. Those that I have spoken with have a message that is not all good. Their opinion is not necessarily the be all or end all of anything, just information to be considered. Do we affiliate elsewhere or stand alone? As with everything we do, there are financial considerations that must be thought through with change. The bottom line as I see it, is that we play a role in all of our problems and issues. We play a role in everything good that comes our way also. We need to look at our role and see how to best play it to achieve our goals.

M&A hopes lift Fujitec shares Mon May 29, 2006 6:38 AM ET
TOKYO (Reuters) - Shares in Japan's Fujitec Co Ltd <6406.T> hit multi-year highs on Monday on speculation that German industrial conglomerate ThyssenKrupp <TKAG.DE> will launch a bid for the elevator manufacturer later this year. ThyssenKrupp, which owns the world's third-biggest elevator maker by revenue, has been looking to acquire a Japanese peer for years and has said it is willing to spend hundreds of millions of euros in the process. "There are a number of factors that make Fujitec look attractive as an acquisition target for one of the bigger international players," said broker CLSA Asia Pacific Markets in a note. Fujitec is the only independent elevator maker in Japan, it has a strong patent portfolio and unique connections with Asian real-estate developers. The elevator maker also has a very strong financial position and is only trading at around 1.27 times book value, the broker added. Fujitec's shares closed 1.2 percent higher at 847 yen, the highest since late 2006, and outperforming the broader TOPIX index <.TOPX> which was up just 0.15 percent. Earlier Fujitec's shares hit 882 yen. On May 23 the Financial Times Deutschland cited Gary Elliot, head of ThyssenKrupp Elevator as saying: "We need one or more large acquisitions in order to reach our growth target," naming Hitachi Ltd's <6501.T> elevator business as the ideal candidate. The German giant is unlikely to be able to snag Hitachi's elevator business as it has been consolidated into a unit including other services such as security. Also Hitachi would be unwilling to give up this cash cow, said CLSA. Any M&A deal is unlikely to be imminent as Elliot has yet to fulfil plans to found a subsidiary in Japan to act as an acquisition vehicle for a possible deal. Also Fujitec denied it is in talks as yet to the broker. Fujitec could not be independently reached for comment. Apart from Hitachi, Fujitec also competes with the elevator operations of Mitsubishi Electric Corp. <6503.T> and Toshiba <6502.T>. United Technologies Corp. <UTX.N> unit Otis Elevator Co. is the largest manufacturer of elevators in the world. Work Safe, Brother Tom Moore tmlocalone@aol.com

Change...... is a song by Sheryl Crow, change will do you good, real change starts with the man in the the mirror, now some of you as you read this will say Wah wah wah, well wah this for a moment.Women put in an application with many trades at the age of 18,most were hired 20 years later because the government forced their hands,so that was a change, and a good one.The question always comes up what have you done for your union lately? well lets see, stood outside holding signs ,screaming, attending every rally, and change came alright, and it wasn't good,What do we do for persons laid off?Do we call and see if they need anything?Do we send a turkey to see if they are having a holiday meal?Nope life goes on and the world keeps rotating.I was raised to never go over someones house empty handed and to always offer assistance,I thought that was a nationwide rule but i guess it was just my house.Non union has grown because the unions didn't let anyone in and hey big surprise here, everyone has to eat,The trades have no respect for us in the past couple of years partly due to a hostile takeover and a sissy contract that every trade hoped would not pass.We ruled at one time and now they spit on us and cross our lines,so again another change not a good one,but is change needed,oh yeah, from every person within,From the overtime hogger ,the overtime thief(you know the one who doesn't want anyone to know he worked Sunday,(the little deal he makes with a super he is in bed with). No one who took and failed the test should be temped, but if you call the union, they will say read your contract,The company can temp anyone for up to 15 days,so why anyone is taking the test.........IS BEYOND ME,!!!TEMPING someone who failed while people await to be put out as Mechanics is a huge slap in the face,So yeah Freddie I agree change is needed,we need to get tough,we need to band together and be one, because for every action there is a reaction and it trickles down the trade ladder,So,who here is buying my family picnic tickets??I love this union,I want nothing less then to be the shoulders it relies on,and I hate to say it but if you all had my work ethic, attitude and drive,we'd be in a much better place, the doesn't matter what you know but who you know has got to gooooooooooooo,change......it'll do you good.

A little clarification about Memorial Day...it is a day to remember and honor those men and women in the Armed Forces who paid the ultimate price for freedom and democracy...those who gave their lives to preserve the way of life that we hold so dear. Do not confuse it with Veterans Day...another day to give thanks to those who served. On Memorial day, every good American who flies the flag should know that the flag flies at half staff until noon, in tribute to those who died...and then at full staff until sunset, unless it is lighted.

I could no agree with Brother McCourt more, we are part of an organization (AFL/CIO) that does nothing for us but take our money. It has not helped in uniting the Elevator workers in NY and NJ an has stood by recently and watched our work stolen and did nothing. We are being neglected by the AFL/CIO and by our elected officials. We have two political parties, Republicans who despise our very existence and Democrats who take us for granted and are more concerned about the rights of illegal immigrants (who steal union jobs and pay no taxes!). We need to put pressure on these people and let them know we can not be ignored! Work Safe, Craig Miller Card #2053

Maybe we(The IUEC) should start thinking about CHANGE!!!! What do we have to lose? The union movement has not gotten any better over the last 20 years and is only getting worse. I have another question, What has anyone done for Local One lately? Isn't a former international IUEC president in charge of the Building Trades? Isn't he the 2nd most powerful union man in the USA? Don't we still have a problem with 2 elevator unions in New York City? Don't the teamsters have about 500 of our Brothers and Sisters? Now we have another trade steal our outside operation of elevators, a trade that doesn't even belong to the Building Trades and what? Not even a appeal to be heard, WOW!!!! All I am asking is for everyone involved with the IUEC to start thinking about CHANGE!!! What the hell do we have to lose?

Laborers break with AFL-CIO Union to align solely with competing group
By Stephen Franklin Tribune staff reporter Published May 23, 2006
After months of straddling organized labor's two deeply divided sides, the Laborers Union said Monday it is quitting the AFL-CIO, effective June 1. With little public fanfare the union notified the labor federation that it would be aligned solely with the Change to Win Federation, the competing group that the Laborers helped create last year with six other unions. Laborers spokesman Richard Greer said the union needed the last few months to "resolve" some internal issues before making its break from the AFL-CIO. "We intend to focus all of our efforts and resources to help construction workers," said Greer, adding that the union represents about 500,000 workers and has another 200,000 retirees and associate members. In its most recent dues payment to the labor federation, the Laborers reported 365,000 members, said Denise Mitchell, a spokeswoman for the AFL-CIO, which represents 51 unions. "Disappointing as it is, it is not a surprise," she said. "We think that with everything working people are facing today, we need a united labor movement." One of the Laborers' concerns reportedly was over the impact of its departure on its 50,000 mail handler members. That will divide them from the nation's other postal worker unions, which belong to the AFL-CIO. Besides playing a key role in setting up the Change to Win Federation, the Laborers joined with the Carpenters Union earlier this year in establishing a competing organization for building trades unions, the National Construction Alliance. Jim McGough, who leads a small Chicago-based dissident movement within the Laborers, criticized the union's break from the AFL-CIO, saying it has "not been debated by the rank and file." "I'm opposed to it," he said. "Unity is better." Besides the Laborers and Carpenters, the dissident labor group includes the Teamsters, the Service Employees International Union, the United Farm Workers, the United Food and Commercial Workers and UNITE HERE, which is the product of the merger of the garment and hotel workers unions. Amid unprecedented debate the unions decided to go off on their own last year, saying the AFL-CIO was unable to save organized labor from demise. The Laborers were founded 103 years ago, with the union's first local in Chicago. ---------- sfranklin@tribune.com Work SAfe, Brother Tom Moore

Construction worker dies in fall at MIT building May 24, 2006 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --A construction worker died Wednesday after falling from an elevator that was being assembled outside an MIT building that houses laboratories, fire officials said. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was investigating the fall at Technology Square, which occurred just before 1 p.m. "The accident happened during the assembly of a construction hoist," said Patti Richards, spokeswoman for Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The lift was being assembled by Julian Crane and Equipment, Richards said. A woman who answered the phone at the Watertown company and declined to give her name said, "It is a tragedy and we're investigating, but there is no statement." The worker's name was not immediately being released and no other details were immediately available, fire Sgt. James DeFrancesco said. MIT owns Technology Square, which consists of seven buildings located a few blocks from campus, in the Kendall Square neighborhood. Several biotechnology firms lease space there. The construction client, Richards said, is Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, which is a research arm of Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG. The Cambridge office did not immediately return a call for comment. Novartis Institutes employs more than 400 scientists and is expanding is Cambridge facility to 1,000 employees, according to the company's Web site. | Work Safe, Brother Tom Moore tmlocalone@aol.com
