Brothers and Sisters,

I can't speak for the other companies, but for all of us who work for Otis, we need to seriously think about safety.  Safety, as we all know, is our #1 priortity.  But whats happening at Otis is that ther are so many procedures to follow, rules to memorize, and forms to fill out, that its starting to distract us from the real hazzards.  I thank Otis for supplying me with all the safety equipment they have.  Safety equipment and safety guide lines are something that we need for every job we do.  But when we have to fill out multiple forms before we access a pit or car top, something is wrong.  A safety hand book is a great reference tool.  But safety does not come from a book.  Safety comes knowledge of equipment, common sense, and experience.  And the people who come and give us safety audits might only possess one of those three, if any.  They seem to forget that we do very dangerous, sometimes mind bogling work.  It involves lots of trouble shooting and brain work, as well as the physical challenge.  They also seem to froget that we have one brain with limited memory.  Their answer to someone getting hurt is to try and make us memorize more rules.  Maybe the reason that person got hurt was because they were so distracted by the rules and forms, they forgot the real danger.  So we really need to stay focused.  Its our life on the line.  We know what we have to do to go home to our families safe, and we do.  I would much rather go home to my family safe, than to say I aced a "safety audit".

And if we don't memorize all their rules and procedures, they threaten us with time off.  Well I don't want time off, but there's always plenty of work around the house to be done.  And I might even have to wear safety glasses while doing some.

Seriously, we really need to stay focused on the real dangers. We know our job. They don't.

Dear Brothers and sisters of all the I.U.E.C.

It was with great sadness when I read of the loss of brother Joe Kelly of Local 27 . During the lockout of Local 1, Joe and myself became friendly. You see he reached out to me to offer support and was genuinely concerned for our membership. We spoke many times and spoke of our families and how important they were to both of us. We became brothers! Although I never met brother Joe Kelly in person, I knew he was a good man.

I just wanted to take a moment of my time and let everyone how grateful I was to have known brother Joe Kelly. The lockout was a challenging time for all of us, thanks to many brothers like Joe and many many other brothers, I became a better person!

My heartfelt condolence's go out to the Kelly family! Words can not do justice the sadness I feel. Please lets remember all the good things that Joe Kelly did, he is resting in a better place.

May God be with the entire Kelly family during this most difficult time. Joe thanks for during the short time we knew each other for always being there. I will miss you

The following was sent to me from Brother Guyer:

Now that the funeral for the Business Representative of Local 27 is over the reality of life without Joe is settling in for his wife Lisa and children; Kristen age 14 and twin boys age 12 Timothy and Patrick.

Joe began as a member of Local 1 New York then transferred to Local 14 Buffalo and finally transferring to Local 27 Rochester NY where he became Business Representative. Joe made many friends in all of these locals.

Local 27's Vice-President Bill DellaStua has set up a college trust fund for Joe's three children. At Local 27's January meeting Bill collected $1183 to begin the fund. I know all members that knew Joe and wish to contribute were not in attendance. Friends of Local 27 from around the country that knew Joe may also wish to contribute.

As Local 27 attempts to solicit funds to assist Joe's children I am reminded of Joe's generosity. He encouraged Local 27 to support the IUEC Katrina Fund in an amount of $1500. At another union meeting Joe encouraged our members to send $1000 to assist our striking Canadian Brothers along with $541 collected from the members in attendance. Understanding the nature of the striking Locals in Canada Joe encouraged our members to accept a $10 per month per member assessment for the duration of their strike. These are large funds for a Local of 71 members. We now have 70 members since the loss of the most generous one. Now is our opportunity to show our generosity to Joe.

Those wishing to donate to Joe Kelly's children's college fund can send checks made out to "THE KELLY KIDS" and mail them to our Vice-President as listed below:

Greetings everyone...  Hope this posting finds everyone in good spirit and health.  I cannot believe it is almost 1 year that you had been locked out.  Hopefully the companies realize that you are a HUGE asset to them.  Without all of you where would they be???  They probably don't know.  Just thought I would post a quick hello to everyone.  It would mean alot to Paul and I if you could say a prayer for our little puppy Herbie.  He has pneumonia.  He was in the hospital for 8 days.  He is feeling better but his lungs are still filled with fluid.  This would mean alot to us.  Take care, work safe and God Bless.

Tomorrow is Thursday January 19th, like every 3rd Thursday of the month their is a union meeting, same place same channel 6 P.M.. Please bring all your questions and concerns and ideas to OUR meeting! Their are many ideas and questions in the field, but I never see many of these members up at the MIKE? To all the interested and involved Local 1 I.U.E.C. members I will see you at the meeting.

We will be setting up a Local 1 merchandise form and information on this website (once we speak to Mike Duffy aka Webmaster general). I would love to see some more members step up to the plate and get involved, please don't sit by idle   when their is so much you can do for your union , your life and your family and faith.

I also want to send out my prayers and well wishes for a full recovery to brother Mark Versace, he was seriously injured in an elevator fall last Friday. Please continue to work safe and reach out to others who are less fortunate then you or me.

Our leadership needs more members involved!! Our leadership could be more informed ( if our members spoke directly to them), instead of having all the ideas in the field, but never bringing them in front of the membership!

I still remain proud, informed , involved and interested in our UNION. Look forward to seeing all the brothers and sisters at the meeting tomorrow night!

Hello Brothers & Sisters,

I just finished reading The Elevator Constructor "January 2006" cover to over. I feel very strongly that the Elevator Constructor should be REQUIRED READING of ALL IUEC MEMBERS! From the insight of Dana A. Brigham, James H. Chapman Jr & Kevin P. Stringer to the articles "Work Preservation", " & "From a Legal standpoint" & NEIEP's corner article and ALL the Local Articles to follow.

We all feel we should be more involved in our union, our jobs, & our lives??? Why not at least read your monthly elevator constructor? Take some of your valuable time & find out whats going on not only in the IUEC, but in our country, our government? I look forward to reading the Constructor , their are many great stories and lessons to be learned. Their are also articles on SOLIDARITY & struggle, as addressed in Local 125's and Local 16 's article. But yet both Locals focused on HOW GRATEFUL they were for what everyone has done for them. You will get everything in life, if you just reach out and help someone less fortunate obtain what they need!

Lets make 2006 a year to remember, stop doing the same things everyday and expect different results. Our next Union meeting is January 19th same place , same channel .

Keep checking your fellow members for their paid UNION card, keep looking after one another, and stay involved and interested in your union, your family, your community and your choice of faith.

Council Members Set Fund Raising As First Business

BY JILL GARDINER - Staff Reporter of the Sun
January 9, 2006
URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/25511

The producer and star of the documentary "Super Size Me" hosted a fund-raiser for his old New York University roommate, Council Member Eric Gioia, late last week.

The event, which was held at a lounge in the West 50s and drew more than 600 guests, is one of several Mr. Gioia has held in the last year to add to his political war chest.

He is not alone: Less than two weeks into new four-year terms, a number of city office holders are starting to raise money for future races.

Council Member Simcha Felder said yesterday that he is planning a fundraiser for March and Council Member Peter Vallone Jr. has one scheduled for later this month at the nightclub Lotus in the West Village.

"Every elected official I know is fund-raising over the next three months," a political consultant, Scott Levenson, said yesterday. "This period traditionally marks the kickoff for fund-raising for the next filing period, especially for candidates who have any ambition for higher office."

Mr. Levenson said the need to raise more money and to raise it early has become crucial in city and state elections, in which candidates must spend ever increasing amounts of money. "If you're not thinking about raising money early you're behind, period," he said.

The finance chairman for Gifford Miller's recent mayoral campaign, Robert Zimmerman, who is a Gioia supporter, said raising money early is "not just smart, it's essential."

Over the summer, Mr. Gioia collected about $100,000 during a fund-raiser at the South Street Seaport, and in the last year the 32-year-old Queens council member has also held fund-raisers in Los Angeles and Seattle.

Having just won a second term with 85% of the vote, the latest event raises questions about what his next move will be. Some have said he had his eye on running for public advocate in 2009, when Betsy Gotbaum is forced out of her job by term limits.

Mr. Gioia said it is "too soon to make a decision." Instead, he said he is focused on using his current office to make government work better. He said his recent event with the "Super Size Me" producer, Morgan Spurlock, which took in lots of small donations, was a way to get people involved.

A spokeswoman for Ms. Gotbaum, Anat Jacobson, said yesterday that the public advocate has not ruled out running for mayor in four years. Ms. Jacobson said Ms. Gotbaum has not yet started fund-raising but that she would form a "2009 committee" soon.

Mr. Vallone, who is reportedly interested in running for district attorney in Queens when the current district attorney, Richard Brown, retires, won his race in November with about 90% of the vote. He said much of the need to raise money early is tied to term limits.

"This is part of what term limits has wrought," Mr. Vallone said. As for the district attorney's position, he said: "I'm a former prosecutor and now I'm public safety chair in the council. It's something I would obviously consider if the job became available."

Mr. Felder said it is appropriate to spend money during a campaign even if the competition is weak, as long as campaign finance rules are followed.

"If you're permitted to spend money on a race, you do whatever you can to get your name out, to get your record out, and to make sure people know what you've being doing in the community both for the position you hold now and for the position you may want to hold in the future," he said yesterday. Mr. Felder did not say which office he is considering running for.

During the recent mayoral campaign, the Democratic nominee, Fernando Ferrer, ran into trouble because he started raising money late and didn't have enough to spend against Mayor Bloomberg.

Mr. Gioia, whose family owns a flower shop under the no. 7 subway line in Sunnyside, has raised roughly $555,000, more than almost any other council member except Melinda Katz, who ran for speaker, and David Yassky, who recently aborted a campaign for district attorney in Brooklyn and is now planning a run for Congress.

"It's actually more than fund raising," Mr. Gioia said yesterday. "Part of the reason I'm doing this is because so often you hear about events where you've got to spend 500 bucks to have a glass of white wine with a politician. What I really want to do is open up the process and get people off the sidelines."

Over the summer, after his previous fund-raiser, the council member said: "I think that ambition coupled with a desire to do good is okay. It's blind ambition that you have to worry about."

Dear Brothers and sisters,

This Sunday is January 1st "2006". We will all make new resolutions, but why must we wait until January 1st to make a change? Any day is just as good of a day to make a change.

2005 was to say the least a very interesting & challenging year. Hopefully like myself, we all learned from these previous events . Whether we were in control of their outcome or not?? Since I have been back to work, I still have great concerns and wonder how many members have made any changes to prepare themselves & their families for any unplanned circumstance? Please brothers & sisters , I am not talking solely about our next contract in 2009 ( or international contract in 2007). Are you ready & prepared if their  is a injury in your family that will create a "desperate" situation in your household?

As educated and informed adults we should always be prepared for that rainy day. WE MUST ALWAYS BE RESPONSIBLE FOR OWN 2 FEET. You can talk to your children, co-workers, friends and family until you are blue in the face . They will " NOT" do as you "say", they are much more likely to do as you DO. Action speaks louder then words.

For those of you who know me, I will always be true to my beliefs. I will always continue to extremely involved , educated and faithful to OUR UNION, MY UNION. I am an extremely proud member of my union, my family & my faith.

You can make any resolution you want, please be honest with yourself and set attainable goals. Most of all make people who surround you at work and at home PROUD of you, set a good example. Don't ask of anybody to do something you don't do yourself.

In 2006, I will continue to be Grateful for everything I have. I am excited about the future of Local 1 I.U.E.C. All for One , one for all .

I want to take this moment to wish everyone a Happy & Healthy New Year!!! Please never under estimate the power of faith & your belief. I am looking forward to being even more involved in Local 1 in 2006, why not join me and make Local 1 an even better place?

LETS MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN !

Good morning my Brothers & Sisters….

I would like to wish one and all a very Merry Christmas…. It’s been a very interesting year to say the least. We’ve experience some High’s and some definite Low’s.. On the High side, We saw brother Hayne’s recovery come to pass, the Golf outing was a success and it seems like he’s on the mend. No doubt he faces many hours of therapy still but Just the same we’re all thankful for God’s grace upon his life as well as our lives.. None of us deserve it, yet we’re afforded a certain measure DAILY. When we stop to consider the near misses, the things that can go wrong at any job site at any given moment, we realize that beside practicing safety and looking out for one another, It is a higher power in whatever form you worship it that keeps us alive.. There’s an agenda in this nation to totally remove all references and traces of his name and his teachings from our daily lives…Many stores now say Happy Holidays rather than Merry Christmas.. It’s a sad trend in this country of ours to be politically correct than to be spiritually correct..

This great country of ours was founded with deep religious principles in mind.. Our forefathers prayed before every battle and the constitution’s language itself proclaims God’s grace and guidance at the very core of it’s foundation. In an interview not long ago the daughter of a famous evangelist was asked What she thought of hurricane Katrina? She responded by saying..” What do we expect of God, when we spent so much time and effort removing his son’s name from our government and schools, and we so earnestly pursue distancing ourselves from his teachings.. Why are we then so surprised and so ready to blame him when he turns his back on us.. Katrina is just the beginning folks.. His teachings say that we’re living in the end times and these disasters are but a prelude of what’s to come… In any event the preceding was just to bring out this truth…

He is the reason for the season… The very word Christmas begins with CHRIST…Enjoy your Christmas with your families, enjoy your day off Monday with your loved ones…Work safe when you go back on Tuesday.. And when you start your day…pause for a moment …..look at the brother working next to you and know that he is all you got. You got his back and he has your back and together you and him are a UNION and never everrrrrr allow these mutts  to drive a wedge between you and him…. I extend my wishes to all the officers in our union, Beginning with Ray (Our Gatekeeper) and all the way down the line…Their efforts are unmesurable, their dedication outstanding and their resolve and tenacity in preserving and restoring our tradition beyond reproach….

Best wishes from me and mine to you and yours…..

The Colon Family
