ON-THE-JOB DEATHS
SKYROCKET IN CITY

By ANDY SOLTIS

On-the-job deaths increased sharply in the city last year, reversing a decade-long decline, the government said yesterday.

There were 107 fatal work injuries here last year, compared with 94 in 2003, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

That 14-percent jump — much bigger than a 2 percent rise nationwide — was mainly due to a spike in the number of employees falling from high places or being struck by a vehicle or mobile equipment.

Work-related fatalities in New York City had plummeted since hitting a peak of 191 deaths in 1993.

Murder remained the most common cause of death on the job in New York, accounting for one in four fatalities. But that dropped from 32 in 2003 to 29 last year, the bureau's research found. Nationally, highway accidents were the most common cause of occupational deaths at 25 percent.

The most dangerous sector of the city's economy last year was construction, which accounted for 28 deaths — an increase of 5 over 2003. Most of the construction deaths were due to falls.

Retail trade and the accommodation/food service sectors were the next most dangerous categories.

It was brought to my attention this week that some of the companies want our men and women to fill out progress reports on the jobs that they are working on. You are not to fill these out unless you have heard from the hall. This is a non-card carrying super's job and if they don't have enough supers that is not our problem. They didn't have a problem finding supers to do(try) our jobs during the LOCKOUT, so let them do their job and we will do ours.

Who speaks for the New York union plumber?

______________________________________________________________

Every day, decisions are made in Washington DC, Albany, and City Hall which affect the lives of Plumbers Local 1 members. New bills are continually introduced before Congress, the State Assembly, and the City Council that can have a major impact on important workplace issues and many of our most basic rights as employees.

The halls of the State Assembly, and the City Council are filled with lobbyists and representatives of Big Real Estate, and Big Business, eager to put forth their views on the latest legislation. But do you ever wonder who is there to speak on behalf of our members? Who protects the interests of the New York union member?

______________________________________________________________

The Role of Political Action Committees

Dear Brothers & Sisters: I'm not  trying to reinvent the wheel, lets fine something that is working for another Building Trades union and take the best of it for our union' use. We can't get our signatories to do a PAC fund check off so we will have to do good old fashion fundraisers.

Work Safe and take care of each other.

Brother Tom Moore Tmlocalone@aol.com _____________________________________________________________

Political Action Committees (PACs) have come under a lot of fire in the media and are frequently cited as an example of why we need campaign finance reform in the United States.

While our way of financing politics may not be ideal, PACs are not the problem. The truth is that under our current system, political action committees offer one of the few ways that union members can come together to make a significant impact on the political process.

Democracy in America is based on the premise that every individual can have a voice in the actions of government. In fact, the founders and greatest thinkers of our country have always insisted that for democracy to work, it must necessarily include the involvement of individual citizens.

But how do individuals like you make an impact? One way, of course, is by exercising your right to vote. Another way is through grassroots involvement on particular issues you care about. Finally, there is the issue of putting your financial support behind the candidates who you agree with.

We all know that money is part of the mechanics of our political system. The days of street corner or Union Square campaign speeches are gone. Today, politicians running for office find they must have access to the sophisticated and expensive tools of the media (TV, radio, advertising, etc.) to get their message across to the public and to get elected. This is the reality of the modern political era.

Without organizations like Plumbers Local 1 being able to set up funds which collectively represent the support of many individuals, only the very wealthy interests in our city and state could afford to make significant campaign contributions. Our elected leaders would only reflect the interests of the rich and powerful. The union worker, the middle class backbone of our city, would be forgotten.

So, Plumbers Local 1 has set up the Local 1 PAC Fund to assist in our political and legislative activities and to help give our members a voice in the political process. This fund does not come from union dues. This fund only exists through contributions made specifically for the purpose of political activity. This money, contributed freely by Local 1 members, goes to help elect candidates who support our views and will listen and consider our interests when the need arises.

For more information about the Local 1 PAC Fund,

Brothers & Sisters:  Click on the above link for a story about three elevators that were installed by START elevator.

We have a very good case against them for non payment of the Prevailing Wage on this job.

When will the many different goverment agencies learn to use good union labor? Do it  right the first time.

Work Safe.

(CBS) NEW YORK How would you like to get stuck in the subway? A horrible thought, but that's what's happening here to Edith Prentiss. who uses a wheelchair to move about.

"The elevators out. How can I get out of here?" Edith asked an operator through the intercom outside the elevator. "You have to use the staircase," the operator replied.

Use the staircase? not a very practical solution to Edith's dilemma.

"I'm in a wheelchair," Edith said.

Edith, a disability rights advocate, says she's been in desperate situations like this many times, because of what she calls NYC Transit's neglect in maintaining subway elevators. That's why she took us here to the West 4th Street station.

New York City Transit recently spent close to seven million dollars making this station accessible for disabled riders, one of only ten percent that are. Three elevators were installed here in April. The elevators are supposed to make it possible for Edith to transfer to the Sixth Avenue line. But we watched as she tried to use this one, and found out it's out of service. She's frustrated, but not surprised.

"It's been out of service for at least a month," said Edith.

So Edith takes the ramp over to the northbound platform, where there's another elevator to make the transfer. She finds out that it too is out of service. Now angry, she again uses the intercom for help.

"Are any of the elevators working at all in the complex?" Edith asked. "No, I'm sorry. They're all out," replied the operator.

Yes, even the elevator she would have to take to exit the station is not working. Edith is stuck.

"There is no way to get out of this station to the street or to transfer," Edith said.

Three new elevators at West 4th Street, all out of service for at least a month. What's going on? We saw a sign on one of the broken elevators saying it will be fixed by October 5th. That's two weeks ago. Even the token booth clerk, who has to deal with the frustrated stranded riders, told me she can't get a straight answer.

"I mean I called elevator repair myself today and he hung up on me," she said. "Is that right?" Diaz asked. The clerk replied, "Yeah. He said, 'don't want to hear your problems' and he hung up."

New York City Transit, in a statement to CBS 2 said "The elevators...have door problems." And they "will be repaired at the contractor's expense...by the end of November."

Michael Harris, from the Disabled Riders Coalition says New York City Transit should at least alert riders to the long term problem, as it's own rules require.

Harris said, "It's supposed to put up signs at every station along the line to warn riders of this. There are no signs up, no warnings, there are no announcements being made on trains. No way for a disabled rider to even know the elevator's out unless they happen to call the hotline."

He says these elevators have been constantly breaking down since they were installed seven months ago, causing huge problems for disabled riders. For Edith Prentiss to get to her destination on the Lower East Side, she'll now have to get back on the subway, go to the nearest accessible station,14th Street or the World Trade Center, then take two buses.

Diaz asked, "So how much time does this add to your trip."

"Today it'll add an extra two hours," replied Edith.

So into our CBS 2 Hall of Shame--we induct New York City Transit, whose elevator repair delays add yet another hardship to the lives of disabled riders.

To reprint an excerpt from Lee Pirones October 2005 article.

It is nice to see that we are all working but the labor fight is not over. There are 2 smaller IUEC Locals that have been on strike since February 17th, 2005 . Local 102 Winnipeg, Manitoba and Local 125A, Newfoundland are striking Otis and Kone. This strike has put a very serious hardship on the members of these unions. We wanted to let them know that we feel for them and they are not alone. We ask all our Local One Brothers ans Sisters to help these fellow Unions please send support to ( IUEC Local 102, 1794 St. Matthews Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3HOA5) and (IUEC Local 125A , 14 McQuade Lake Crescent, Ste. 205, Halifax , NS B3S1B60. Thank You for your solidarity and never forget!

Well as of Today October 28th these members are still on strike . We are talking a small group . 22 members are out from Local 102, and 6 members are out from 125A. From what I have heard Its all about money "always is" . What I find challenging FOR US HERE IN LOCAL 1 WE ARE A large UNION. We could make a tremendous impact for these fellow brothers and/or sisters? We have close to 3000 members? IF EVERYONE DONATED even 5 dollars? @ 3000 members = 15000 $ and divide that by 28 unemployed members=  thats 535 dollars per member!!!!!! I challenge everyone here in Local 1 and across the country and Canada , be a giver not a taker and help these brothers make a stand and most of HELP THEIR FAMILIES! Stop the its not happening to me attitude. Get involved.

I also would like to thank Brother  Kevin Stringer of the IUEC for his time today explaining to me the situation in Canada , and never being to busy not  to get back to a concerned IUEC member. You have the reason , you have the addresses so send a check NO EXCUSES.

Also on a personal note , I challenge all the nay sayers and people who aren't happy with their UNION? Get to a meeting and be part of YOUR UNION.

Thanks for your time Brother Brian Link

Superintendent dies in elevator shaft plunge

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

A building super plunged to his death yesterday when he apparently opened an elevator door with his key, lost his balance and fell down the shaft, officials and friends said.

An elevator mechanic spotted the body of Raul Perez, 34, a father of two, lying at the bottom of the shaft around 1:45 p.m.

Investigators believe Perez was trying to fix the broken elevator at 110 Lafayette St. when he opened the door and somehow fell.

"The doors just opened up, and he stepped in and fell," said Dominic Paul, 45, a maintenance man in a building next-door.

It was not immediately clear from what floor Perez fell.

Perez, a former member of the Navy, lived in Valley Stream, L.I., with his wife and two daughters. He had been a super at the building for more than a decade and was beloved by co-workers.

"He worked overtime all the time to make money for his family," said William Figueroa, 51, of the Bronx, also a maintenance worker. "He was a good, hardworking man."

The Buildings Department said there had been no previous complaints about the elevator. No violations were immediately issued, but the investigation is continuing.

The union meeting was very informative. Our attorney was there and answered any questions asked of him during meeting. The Defense fund was brought up for the 2nd consecutive meeting by Business Agent Lenny Lagotte. Ray Hernandez informed us we will be getting information regarding the RULES of the defense fund , and what it will be used for. I personally feel its pretty simple? I believe Its should be  " Entirely" for all the members locked out or out on strike/ work stoppage. Also a situation was also brought up was the members, ( not strong ones) who still to date haven't paid their mandatory acessment? How embarassing?, we were told their union card would be taken away after 6 months in arrears" of not paying the accessment" These brothers didn't support the locked out brothers? I also was dissapointed to see the low turnout at the meeting? I would like to see the "small" fine enforced for not attending union meetings? I would like to see how the entire membership feels about issues facing our union. I am really getting tired of members complaining and asking What happened at the meeting?  It's sad to say these members NEVER attend the meetings, brothers and sisters its time to put up OR SHUT UP! Give up a night of OVERTIME? , we have approx 10 meetings? how about making half?

I do appreciate the brothers and sisters that Do attend meetings! I do appreciate all the hard work our B. A. s and our President is doing. I really appreciate all the hard work our Shop Stewards do for us!!!! I will continue to be involved, educated and committed to make Local 1 a better place to work . Continue to check union cards, continue to work safe, PLEASE READ OUR NEW CONTRACT COVER TO COVER AND UNDERSTAND IT.

In a perfect world we would have 100% attendance at all union meetings, I know this will  never happen? But how about we start as 1 member at a time look at the end of our own arms and ask yourself? What am I doing for this union? What am i doing for my brothers and sisters? And lastly to all those brother who chose Not to support YOUR union during the lockout? Your names our out there, Its always better late then NEVER!

It is was It is , but Strong members and strong people just don't accept the way things are lets as a union try to make it better. Their will be a vote on the defense fund , I would really like to see a big turnout so our union is represented by the majority of its membership not a small %

Thanks for your time . To the involved and interested members, I will see you at the next meeting Respectfully submitted Brother Brian Link
