To the men in my area who continue to hold the lines where they fall. Cant tell you how proud I am to be associated with you !!!( As we have heard before we are called THE REGULARS).Here on Long Island we still will have a picket line at Stonybrook University Hospital @south entrance. Also we could always use help at American Airlines @terminal 8 @ 9. If you havent heard we caught some scabs working in the escalator pits and also a laborer assisting an ironworker putting up a wrought iron ladder in some of OUR ELEVATOR pits. I would also like to thank a brother who reported some American Airline Mechanics working on trying to restart one of the Schindler Swe units in the existing building.I guess some Airline Union Cards (dont mean to them what a Local 1 Union card does) . My union card means to me that I will do whatever possible (peacefully) to protect OUR WORK and also protect my fellow brothers and sisters who work alongside US for other Union trades AFL/CIO , you see I always believe and will continue to believe I do My TRADE , Do it to the best of my ability, Do it safely . And just as importantly I will not or ever do anyone elses job. OTIS says safety first? It sure doesnt sound like that? Well brothers and sisters KEEP THE FAITH . This is how I clearly see the situation as a 19+ year member of Local 1.
To my dear brothers, sisters and fellow tradesmen,
I will give a recap for those of you who are unaware what is going on in NYC.
As of midnight on March 16,2005 the contract with Local 1 Elevator Constructors and the Elevator Manufacturers of NY (EMANY) expired. Local 1 directed its members to report to work the following day. Upon reporting to work as directed, the EMANY employers had already decided to lockout its UNION employees. Thus, leaving the cities elevator repair and maintenance to replacement workers (SCABS) that have been brought in from around the country. They include salespeople, mail room clerks and any other office employee that they could muster together. Safety first, I think not.
Otis, Schindler and Kone elevator companies make up this group called EMANY. Ninety percent of all Local One IUEC signatory companies have signed Interim agreements with Local One. Although ninety percent of our companies are signed, EMANY consisting of the three largest employers have decided to try and break the union.
The main reason I am writing this down on paper and addressing my fellow trades in NYC is to inform you of the details and to let you know that they are coming for you in July.
I have read the communication letters from EMANY to REBNY (Real Estate Board of NY) and to BOMA/NY. It is pretty apparent to me that they are all in the same bed together. The main goal being, BREAK THOSE NYC CONSTRUCTION UNIONS.
We need to stand together more now then ever. Any differences any trades may have had with each other must be put aside. If they can’t divide us, they can’t break us. For every trade that has a contract due to expire in July, you must pay attention to what is happening to Local 1 right now.
I don’t believe that EMANY, REBNY, BOMA or any other board concerning construction in NYC counted on the strength of Local Ones members or the relationships they have with all the trades.
Please lend your support whenever or however you can. We will stand strong with you when it is your turn.
As far as all the builders and owners, I am not shocked or dismayed by the blatant disregard for the Union employees that have dedicated its talents and have given you most of their lives and sometimes even blood for you. I would expect you to try to scrimp and save anywhere you can, after all that is big business. I will however be very disheartened if you allow this to go much further then even you expected. You need your buildings built and we need our jobs to care for our families. Sounds like a pretty fair trade to me.
This dispute is not about money. The EMANY group is demanding that we give up one-third of our work, give up more time with our families for less and to give up our right to privacy. Why is it that ninety percent of our signatory companies have signed agreements already? EMANY thinks that they are above all others. I think not. EMANY along with its top negotiator James Walker, are just slimy and greedy business people. I would think twice about doing business with EMANY if I were an owner or builder in NYC. There are many other choices. NYC would definitely move on and thrive in the construction world without these three companies. It is their choice. Let’s all hope and pray they make the right one.
WE WANT TO WORK!
Stay Strong, Stay Together and Stay Informed
All of our livelihoods are at stake NOW!
HOLD THAT LINE

Just a reminder to all out there. Lets not let the Big Foreign & Domestic Corporate Greed reduce us to THIRD WORLD STATUS..
Look around and see what they are doing to all the working class in this country. (or the world for that matter)
Our MIDDLE INCOME STATUS will be taken away if we settle for shift work!!!!!! Once you give something up you will never regain it. Keep up the fight..

Mr. Steven Spinola of the N.Y. real estate board has a message on his site, it states that the rest of the real estate co.s should support emany. It states that our demands are huge, with no productivity, he's asking them to hold tight-Emany has skilled labor replacing us. Mr. Spinola, you should take your hand out of emany's pocket, before the lights turn on.You're feeding your associates a load of crap.I guess having 1 salesman accompanied by a sec. guard covering all of Manhattan from 12am to 8am is considered skilled labor. Everyone go to www.rebny.com for a good laugh, you can also pick from the real estate co. website list and send any co. a message. I've sent out a few that say - GO TO I.U.E.C.1.ORG FOR THE TRUTH. Thanks for your time.

Last week a couple of us caught a super, an out of town scab and two security scabs down at the Brooklyn Criminal Courthouse, (120 Schermerhorn St). After they were done they snuck out the back door. We caught them down the block. One of the guys I was with took the scabs picture. I let one of the cops know what I thought of what they were doing. The super said he was just doing his job. I've been in this buisness for 26 years, just doing my job and never had to sneak out the back of a building. I might not be working right now, I don't know when I'll be working again or how I'm gonna feed my family and pay the bills down the road but at least I can hold my head up high in public. I'm okay with what I'm doing. I've never profited from someone else's misfortune. I know that the supers and scabs are making alot of money now but he who laughs last laughs best! Stay strong and remember, the only way we can win this is together.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

To all my brothers and sisters of Local 1, stay strong! We have been here before. In 1969 we were on strike for four months, in 1972 we were on strike for seven long and difficult months, and in 1975 we endured a three week lockout. Three successive contracts and three successive work stoppages, each and every time we prevailed! They tried to break us and they failed! They will fail this time! EMANY cannot beat us if we stay strong!

To win this lockout we must back our leaders 150%! These union officers care about you. They want the best for the membership and are fighting alongside you to achieve that goal. They understand the hardships the membership is enduring right now but they need your support now more then ever. Everyone must have their backs 150%.

STAY STRONG! KEEP FIGHTING!

Ed Brock, A proud retired Local 1 member.

Hey SCABS

Have you noticed yet that it isn't important to have your position in the office filled right now.... Doesn't that make you feel important and valuable.

Mean while here you SCUM SUCKERS  are scurrying around trying to fill our positions...... WHO'S MORE IMPORTANT????

And have you ever noticed that when the lights of cameras turn on these SCUM SUCKIN' SCABS scurry off like there cousin THE COCKER-ROACH (such similarities), BOTTOM FEEDERS, SH!T EATERS...I'm sure we could go on & on...

I THINK WE SHOULD MAKE THESE SCUM SUCKIN' SCABS NEEDED AND WANTED...... BACK IN THEIR OWN AREAS.....  DO YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY..... THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL UNION AND THE SH!T THATS HAPPENING HERE IN NEW YORK IS GOING TO RUN DOWN HILL IN 27.

I WONDER... DO SCUM SUCKIN' SCABS CRUNCH & SQUISH WHEN STEPPED ON LIKE COCKER-ROACHES....hmm.

To all who were at Roosevelt Field yesterday it was a great turnout.  Over 100 Brothers and sisters together standing strong.  That's what this union is all about.  Hat's off to Brothers Stork and McCourt.  As usual a fantastic job. I and I know many who attended yesterday went home feeling confident that were going to prevail in this battle.  And I and many feel that way simply because of one reason.  Our leaders.  Each and every day our leaders prove to us just how prepared, poised and focused they are representing us.  Keep up the fantastic job.

Keep the faith

New terminal, same old problems

Escalators out of service at Whitehall and labor problems have kept them from being repaired
Friday, April 01, 2005
By SETH SOLOMONOW
STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE

The labor lockout that delayed this week's opening of a new St. George Ferry Terminal entrance now has idled four escalators at Whitehall, leaving commuters to hoof it up the stairs or cram into the elevator.

One by one over the last two weeks, Whitehall's new escalators have ground to a halt following routine malfunctions, and have remained frozen for lack of repairmen.

Many passengers have marveled aloud at how four new escalators could break down so quickly, less than two months after the terminal's Feb. 8 grand opening.

"They should never be broken -- period," said Walter Tenzycki of Oakwood, as he shuffled up the stairs with the aid of a cane.

"This is a brand-new terminal?" asked Rosebank resident Rachael Tortoriello. "It's a disgrace!"

Workers represented by Local 1, International Union of Elevator Constructors, have been locked out of worksites around the city since March 17, the expiration date of their contracts with several firms, including terminal contractor Kone.

The lockout forced city officials to postpone opening the escalator- and elevator-dependent southern lobby and western entrance at St. George, planned for last week.

Raymond Hernandez, president and business manager of Local 1, said a demand for a 7 percent wage and benefit increase in each of the next three years was rebuffed.

"We reported for work and they said they had nothing for us," Hernandez said

He decried management's bid to rewrite some work rules, require GPS-style technology and revisit the pay scale for nighttime work.

James Walker, negotiator for the Elevator Manufacturers' Association of New York, dismissed the union's last proposal as "regressive and unresponsive." In a statement, he said the union "refused to seriously consider our proposals regarding key productivity measures."

Walker said he proposed a 7 percent increase immediately, and 22.5 percent over five years.

In correspondence with the union, Walker also has accused Local 1 members of leveling "threats, intimidation, violence and sabotage," charges that Hernandez has denied.

Both sides say an agreement could be reached at any time, and many commuters expressed hope the dispute will be resolved before the elevator breaks down.

Others viewed the dismal development with a sense of foreboding, recalling long periods over the years when Whitehall's escalators regularly broke down.

"I think it's a portent," said Community Board 1 member and Democratic Party activist Vincent Montalbano, a ferry rider who is often critical of the ferry system's management.

City Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kay Sarlin said the DOT would work with other agencies to fix the escalators, adding, "We apologize for the inconvenience to ferry riders that the current situation has caused."
