This was a reply to my previous posting and later my answer
I've been out of work over three years. I feel the 40 hour work week Hurt us. The two bad contracts that we voted on left us without our hoisting. That is why we have brothers / sisters out of work. Truth of the matter is if the union wanted to put brothers \ sisters back to work they would would go to a fer-low program. They would put people back to work. Then all brothers \ sisters could be paying dues and getting medical benefits. If local 3 can do it why can't we do it and they have Lot more men then us. The Freedom Tower was broking promises. I cannot figure out why none of the out of work brothers \ sisters are not up and armed about what go on i was lay ed off when temporarily machinate were working over time. Then i knew guys that went back as helpers they ended up helping temporarily merchants. The union is not the same. My Reply:
I never voted yes to any of the contracts. I was one whom was part of the Lock out at the time. Our union brothers and sisters whom were still working, should not have. We were divided right from the start. I can go on and on, but I r really want to know is, What can we do now? How can we turn this around?

Housing Authority Elevator Mechanic Says Inspection Reports Bogus - The Chief: News Of The Week Calls Discipline Retaliation Housing Authority Elevator Mechanic Says Inspection Reports Bogus AN INSPECTOR CALLS By Andrew Hinderaker AN INSPECTOR CALLS: Anthony Depompeis, a Mechanic who inspects elevators for the Housing Authority, says he was suspended because he questioned a culture of rushed and botched inspections and criticized his boss for making him move on without calling repairmen. ‘I would ask about the problems, they’d say, “Do nothing, that’s why it’s called creative writing,”’ he said, referring to the written reports he had to file.
Posted: Monday, January 24, 2011 5:00 pm | Updated: 4:18 pm, Mon Jan 24, 2011. By DAVID SIMS | A culture of rushed and botched elevator inspections pervades the Housing Authority, alleged a Mechanic who claims he has been suspended on manufactured charges, in retaliation for asking his supervisor questions about missing and falsified inspection reports. Anthony Depompeis was suspended after allegedly threatening to kill his supervisor, Kenneth Buny, and his foreman, Douglas Engstler. “They say I said, ‘If you go after my job I’m going to kill you,’’’ Mr. Depompeis said in an interview. He admitted he had raised his voice, but denied making such a threat, saying that Mr. Buny was out to get him because he had complained about the work culture in the HA elevator inspection unit. The HA currently employs 11 inspectors, who have the title of Mechanic but gain the promotion by taking a test. The inspectors are supposed to look at six elevators a day, mark down any problems they see on a written report, and then input those problems into a hand-held computer which is linked to the HA system. They submit the hand-written reports at the end of the day. Every elevator in the HA is required to be visually inspected every six months, with a more-thorough inspection every year and a full inspection, with a full load of weights in the elevator, every five years. Further precautions have been installed, such as locks to prevent opening of the elevators manually from the outside, after the death of five-year-old Jacob Neuman in a Williamsburg project in August 2008. After an elevator stalled halfway onto a new floor, the doors were opened from the outside and Jacob tried to jump down to the floor, but lost his balance and fell down the shaft and died. That incident prompted new funds for elevator maintenance in the HA. But Mr. Depompeis alleges that inspectors are often told not to enter problems into their reports if it would require them to wait around in a building for a Mechanic to arrive, or if it would involve them shutting down the only elevator in a building. “They would say, ‘don’t shut it down, that’s the only car in the building.’ They say they’ll call the supervisor,” he said, referring to his superiors. “Numerous times, I was told by Kenny and Doug to just move on, the Mechanic for that area will fix it...they would say, ‘that’s a hot building, people gotta get up the stairs, they’ll start calling and complaining.’” Mr. Depompeis has worked for HA since 1996 and as a Mechanic since 1998. He was promoted to Elevator Inspector in 2010, quickly clashing with management. Transcripts of his disciplinary hearing reveals that he repeatedly argued with Mr. Buny, especially over one incident where Mr. Depompeis did not perform the required six daily inspections. It was revealed that he had found an elevator was out of service for modernization work, did not know how to proceed, and had called Mr. Buny several times. Mr. Buny admitted during the hearing that he had not heard his phone, but said Mr. Depompeis had verbally attacked him that day and had been given a counseling session as a result. Later, it was charged that Mr. Depompeis had not handed in his written reports during June and July, and again from the middle of August to the middle of September. Mr. Depompeis denies the claim, though, saying that HA has lost the forms. Lawyer Cites Discrepancies His attorney, Arthur Schwartz, who is employed by Mr. Depompeis’ union, Teamsters Local 237, has compared the written reports HA provided him with their computerized counterparts and found discrepancies “in four out of five cases,” he said. The reports often show that Mr. Depompeis noted several faults with the elevators that were not entered into the computer report. As the computer report is what prompts maintenance work to be done on the elevators, this means the work was not being done, Mr. Schwartz charged. Additionally, Mr. Depompeis said he was called to HA headquarters for an 18-hour overtime shift in September where he entered written reports into the computer system months after they should have been filed. In the disciplinary hearing, Mr. Buny admits that “Mr. Depompeis was told to enter information for tests that he had results for” on that day. He also admits that the computer reports were changed to reflect the date they should have been entered, rather than when they actually were. “That’s all they changed,” he said. “The inspection reports are basically a joke. They’re lost, they’re entered months later, even though you wouldn’t know,” Mr. Schwartz said in an interview. “If it’s not being entered into the system until months later, the work isn’t being done.” He said that Mr. Depompeis’ eventual outburst was due to his being on anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medication, as well as having high blood pressure. “You have a person already with a problem being put in a high-anxiety situation, and his anxious side over this built up and built up and built up and finally there comes a day in October where he basically says, ‘I’m not doing this anymore,’ and he screamed at his supervisor,” he said in the hearing. HA spokeswoman Sheila Stainback said in a statement, “NYCHA does not comment on pending matters.” Gerald Sternberg, special counsel for the HA who represented the agency in the disciplinary hearing, said of Mr. Schwartz’s charges, “This is just a complete fabrication to say there was any fraud going on...there’s no factual basis to what he said,” according to the transcript.

I had was laid off in NYC for three years now. I have been laid off in Las Vegas over a year and a half. Kept up my dues faithfully. I am a mechanic and had been for about 5 years now. I understand that there is no work and there are lay offs. But I feel that the so called line is BS. I know that no one is going to call for me, a girl in this business. Especially when I have not worked for that company. I am a good worker and got to know this business rather well. I also know that I always can learn more. Union brothers whom worked with me can attest that I am a strong woman and can hold my own. I was told once that, "women should not be in this business" by one member. When I worked with that person, he still said that, "women should not be in this busines", but he etended "except you". I had worked in construction in extreme conditions. I do not understand why other members get laid off and called back within a short time, and new mechanics get put out before seasoned mechanics on a bench. I remember getting put off of my mechanic status because of mechanics still on the bench. Rightfully so. So why the disrespect now? Seams like a double standard to me in every way.

Comments: A few days ago my good friend and beloved bar owner, Johnny Russell, of Johnny's Union Park Cafe, unexpectedly and way too short in life, died. Johnny's bar, an Oceanside Long Island establishment, is a well known elevator mans hangout where many a Local One paycheck was cashed and spent. Where Johnny himself would work the phones and keep the doors locked to keep the wives away from us on payday. Johnny's brother Scotty, asked me if there was anyway we could get the pipers (they played the bar often and Johnny loved it) to play the memorial service. I immediately reached out to Brother Madden (who in his own right is certainly no stranger to the drinking side of the mahogany at Johnny's) for help. On ridiculously short notice he assured me he would take care of it. I can't describe the serenity and calmness that the sounds of his pipes gave us as he played outside to a packed funeral home while we sat through an unbearable service. He made a terrible day easier for all of us. If there is a better brother or human being around these parts I have yet to meet him. Thanks again Billy, it meant a lot! Geezer
