Oct 9, 2006 - In the second quarter of 2006, production of elevator doors and cars for the North American market got underway in KONE’s purpose-built facility in Torreón, Mexico. KONE has now decided to transfer the current elevator component manufacturing activities in McKinney, Texas, to Torreón by the middle of 2007. This will affect approximately 55 production related positions within the KONE’s McKinney operation.

In line with KONE’s global manufacturing processes, the new factory in Mexico employs the same modern production technology as other KONE component plants. The Torreón factory currently employs 60 persons, and extension of the facilities has recently begun to meet the forthcoming capacity needs.

Torreón offers an excellent logistics network and pool of qualified labor to serve the new factory. Most of the management and personnel have been recruited locally, and KONE is actively cooperating with local suppliers.

I would like to extend a thank you to the hard working and dedicated members of the Local One Pipe Band for playing at our wedding yesterday. You helped make a great day even better. You looked and sounded unbelievable. This union, as well as yourselves, should be very proud of how far you have come. Kathy and I, and our families, are so grateful. Keep up the good work.

Just something to think about when you take money from the annuity fund. A loan is ok since the money is going to be paid back, but if you take money from the fund, you will get hit with taxes on you income tax for and that money will never be paid back. The annuity fund is the best thing that happened to us, since it is money the we could never save.

I am sure that since it has been made so easy to take money out of the fund, many have taken advantage of it. But please keep in mind that when to much has been taken out, WE WILL NOT SEE THE HIGH DIVIDENDS that we have been used to getting, and it will weaken our financial strenght. Maybe it is time to tighten the belt in this dept. Everyday you hear of company's cutting pensions plans as part of new contracts, lets protect what we have before it is to late.

Today is October 5th, if you paid your Union Dues on time you should have your quarterly card by now? Please carry it at all times. We NEED to continue to to challenge/check one another for each others paid union card.

October 19th is our next regular union meeting. PLEASE come to the meeting and get involved ! Their are many EXTREMELY IMPORTANT issues /concerns facing Local 1, lets our questions and concerns out front so we as a membership can address them.

     I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS

  1) What were the highs and lows of the 29th convention?

  2) How are we going to pay for the monitors in the union hall?

  3) How are we going to address the loss of operation of elevators to the Engineers and how can we help these brothers/sisters who are out of work because of this?

I will always be an educated , involved concerned and active union member of Local 1. Do  I have all the answers? Absolutely not, but we need to all be more educated, we all need to more involved!  We need to to move forward, we need to bring Local 1 where It belongs , Back To The Front. For those of you who are truly concerned about the future of Local 1, come out to the meeting on October 19th, GET INVOLVED

WE ALL DESERVE THE RIGHT TO BE INFORMED, ALL FOR ONE

Make a choice to be part of the solution not the problem.

On behalf of my Brothers and Sisters of Local 2, it was an honor to have walked the picket lines with you during the EMANY lockout. I met with many of your Members during this time and the feeling of Brotherhood and friendship was overwhelming. Coming back from the Convention, the feeling was the same. I felt compelled to send a note to the Members of Local 1, complimenting your delegation that was sent. I'd like to especially compliment Business Manager Ray Hernandez. In his struggle for Local 1 to receive a full time Organizer, Ray did not campaign for the position of Vice-President. He came out to the convention for an Organizer for the Local, not a position --a sign of a true leader.

Local 1 was well represented!

Bronx Tenants 'Fed Up' With Non-Working Elevator

Image

Tamsen Fadal
Reporting

(CBS) BRONX Angry residents living in a six-story apartment building want to know when their elevator is going to be fixed. They say it's been broke since May and it's difficult for people who live there to get around.

It's happening at 1694 Davidson Avenue in Morris Heights. That is where Jose Delos Santos lives. Delos Santos walks with a cane. Not long ago, this Bronx resident had a car accident and now to make matters worse, he's living on the 5th floor of the Morris Heights apartment building with a broken elevator.

Delos Santos says he tries to limit the amount of times he goes up and down the stairs, "This morning I came down, I will not go back up there till 2-3 O'clock in the afternoon. I will find something else to do not to go up and down twice a day because I can't."

Plus, he says getting his laundry bag up and down the stairs is next to impossible, so he washes his clothes in the bathtub. Delos Santos explained, "I do two, three underwear or what I am going to use for the week in my bathtub and hang them inside to dry"

Residents like Rosa Primitiva say their complaints have not changed a thing. Primitiva said, "I'm a retired person, I'm 76 years old, what if I have to walk all the way up to the sixth floor. And we keep telling them and they don't do nothing. I don't know what's the problem"

According to the Bronx Heights Neighborhood Community Corporation, which manages the building, it is an old elevator and the motor is broken and they are trying to repair it. A spokesperson from the management office told CBS 2 that it's only been down for about a month, but residents like Leslie Allen say otherwise.

Allen, "That's not true. You can talk to anybody else in the building. They will tell you it's been over six months. "We have senior citizens in the building, as well, some just went under surgery just recently, we have to help them up the stairs all the time. They just don't care."

The city department of buildings says there have been ongoing complaints about the building and violations have been issued. But, the next step could be criminal charges. According to the building's management they are waiting for the elevator company to get a new motor.

Did anyone see which Union is was working on the crane that fell? In all the stories I read, I did not see it noted who they were or did I miss that part. The story in the times also made no mention of them. It makes you wonder, they did mention Tishman as the contractor.

OSHA wants $84,500 in fines for worker killed by elevator

Associated Press

A contractor faces $63,000 in federal workplace safety fines for an accident in which a subcontractor's employee was decapitated by an elevator.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed the fine against Massaro Corp. of Pittsburgh, in the April 13 death of James Neely.

Neely, 44, was working for subcontractor Mariani & Richards Inc. when he stuck his head through a panel in a freight elevator shaft door and was struck by a passing elevator car. OSHA investigators found that Massaro Corp. willfully violated workplace safety rules by not covering glass panels that had been broken or removed from the doors leading to the elevator shaft.

Massaro Corp. president Joseph Massaro III said the company has a good safety record and plans to fight the fines.

"This was a tragic accident that cost a man his life, but that doesn't mean there was anything willful about it," he said. "We have a strong culture of safety in this company, and we take the well-being of our employees very seriously."

OSHA also proposed a total of $21,500 in fines against Mariani & Richards and six other subcontractors for lesser safety violations.

Ron Freeborough, president of Mariani & Richards, said Neely was an experienced worker who should have known better than to stick his head into the elevator shaft. That company will also appeal the fine, he said.

The companies have 15 days to appeal, but Massaro said his company would first try to negotiate a lesser penalty.

The accident happened at a former warehouse that is being converted into apartments for students at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

Massaro had previously said the elevator operator did not know that Neely was peering into the shaft.

The buttons used to summon the elevator were not working, OSHA found, and workers at the site used walkie-talkie-type phones to communicate with each other.

In regards to the operators and shop stewards meeting scheduled for Tuesday: If this meeting is to inform the membership about jurisdiction, and jurisdiction alone, then all members in good standing should be eligible to attend, but, from my understanding of this meeting, it is not only about jurisdiction, it’s main purpose is to address the immediate future of the 100 or so operators that are currently out of work and have been out of work for some time. The jurisdiction of operating temporary elevators can be addressed at a regularly scheduled membership meeting.

Schindler Elevator Corporation fined $300,000 for health and safety violation

By Canada NewsWire

LONDON, ON, Sept. 25 /CNW/ -- Schindler Elevator Corporation, a Scarborough, Ont.-based company that specializes in the installation and repair of commercial and residential elevating devices, was fined $300,000 today for a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that resulted in the death of an employee at an office building in London.

On March 20, 2005, two elevator workers were ascending on a platform of a stripped freight elevator car when the platform went out of control and continued to rise in the seven-storey shaft. Unable to stop its ascent with the control panel buttons, both workers jumped off the moving platform in an effort to land on a second-floor landing. One of the workers safely reached the landing. The other did not and fell 12.8 metres (42 feet) to the bottom of the elevator shaft and died. The incident occurred at Dominion Public Building at 457 Richmond Street in London. The workers were employed by Schindler Elevator Corporation, which had been hired to modernize three elevators in the building. The modernization project involved the dismantling and removal of old elevator equipment and installation of new elevators.

A Ministry of Labour investigation found Schindler Elevator Corporation did not have written instructions or procedures for dismantling elevators and did not provide the workers, including the workers' supervisor, with adequate information, instruction and supervision to ensure the dismantling work was done safely. In particular, the company failed to provide instruction to ensure the elevator, where the fatality occurred, remained in balance with proper counterweights and was prevented from an uncontrolled ascent into the shaft ceiling. An imbalance in the counterweights caused the elevator rope and sheave to break traction when activated by the mechanics causing the elevator car to run away upwards in an uncontrolled fashion until the elevator frame hit the top of the seventh floor shaft.

Schindler Elevator Corporation pleaded guilty, as an employer, to failing to provide information, instruction and supervision on how to safely dismantle the elevator, including when and how to adjust counterweights. This was contrary to Section 25(2)(a) of the act.

The fine was imposed by Justice of the Peace Stewart Taylor of the Ontario Court of Justice in London. In addition, the court imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.

I have to agree with Brother O'Brien. Any member in good standing should be able to attend the meeting on Tuesday.Since any card member, journeyman or apprentice, may be referred by the hall to work as an operator,it stands to reason that every member has a stake in this important area of the business. The future of our jurisdiction on temporary elevators will affect ALL areas of our business, from pension and welfare contributions,as well as annuity returns and future medical costs to all members.

It is important to note that the less money contributed to the pension and welfare funds, the higher the contribution out of every members wage package to keep the same level of benefits, and less in the envelope come March 17th. We are all in this together, therefore any member who wishes to know the facts should be able to attend.

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

I just wanted to thank brother Mario V ( Local 18) for forwarding  the photos of Brother Costello's flag with many other heroes who were lost in the WTC tragedy, which can be found on the webs picture page. I also would like to take a moment and REMIND everyone to get out and support Labor friendly politicians in your areas!

I would really like to hear some of the results from our International convention ?? I also would like to commend brother Denis Kilduff regarding his positive post on how PROUD he was to be part of the process at the past convention. We need to be more educated in our daily lives. I am looking forward to our next regular union meeting . We will have many questions for our elected officials on the results and how we as ONE we move forward.

Keep challenging/checking each other for your paid up union card.

Keep working safe and work smart.

Keep helping one another, assist and stay involved

Most of all GET EDUCATED , we need to be more involved in our unions, we need to get the REAL facts ( not the rumors )

Lets all get to the next union meeting and ALL those questions and concerns that any member has can be addressed by our elected officials.

Regarding safety, always use your best judgment everyday . Please PRACTICE What you preach. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your safety, ask afellow brother or shop steward to help you out . DONT WORK UNSAFE ! LOCK&TAG

NEVER NEVER FEEL THAT YOU ARE WORKING OUT IN THE FIELD BY YOURSELF!!!!

I will as always remain an educated , involved , concerned and very active and involved UNION Member . I hear alot of great ideas and suggestions out there by many brothers and sisters to make Local 1 even better . " Please don't leave your ideas in your head, get them to your steward or BA! " or just bring it to THE MIKE @ the meetings , GET INVOLVED , GET INVOLVED !!!!
