Subject: IUEC Convention
Date: March 15, 2006 12:31:46 AM EST
3B Vote for 3B
Dan "Danbo" Kuhn
I have been nominated to represent Local One at the IUEC 29th General
Convention. I am running as an Independent candidate, not on a ticket.
Many of you may remember my dedication during the 14 week lock-out. I
will bring that same dedication to the convention.
It's good to see democracy in action, and know that any member in good
standing can run for office. Make no mistake, whoever represents Local
One at this convention -- we will be united.
The vote is Thursday, April 20th at both the L.I.C. location and the
Perth Amboy location.
Feel free to forward and/ or print out a copy or two of this letter
and pass it to your co-workers.
Best Regards,
Danbo

Dear Brothers & Sisters:  Please take the time to do this.

Hi ,

Some things are just obvious. And decent. Here's one in our minds. No employee of a hugely profitable corporation like Wal-Mart should be forced to go without medical care or forced to resort to Medicaid.

The newly-named Fair Share for Health Care Act (thanks to everyone who voted for a bill name!) will ensure that large employers provide decent benefits for their employees and help level the playing field for responsible local businesses.

Please take a moment to send an email asking your state Assemblymember to cosponsor the Fair Share for Health Care Act. Then, ask your family and friends to help by forwarding this email to them.

To take action, follow this link: http://www.workingfamiliesparty.org/fairshare/

Our Fair Share for Health Care web site has more on the bill, and you can read about the bill name , the bill launch and the press coverage we've already gotten.

And then take action by sending an email asking your state Assemblymember to cosponsor the Fair Share for Health Care Act and asking your family and friends to help by forwarding this email to them.

To take action, follow this link: http://www.workingfamiliesparty.org/fairshare/

Hello Brothers and Sisters,I am a candidate for Delegate to the next International Convention.I think every member of LOCAL ONE should have the same opportunity to vote. What about a mail-in ballot or e-mail?That would make it easier for every member. No matter where you live or where you may be at the time. Why not?

Some of you may know Tim Faranda, Schindler Elevator, or some of you may know him from the old days at Central Elevator or Millar.  Tim started in this business in 1975 and has made a lot of friends along the way.  Many of you may not know that Tim is very sick and has been at Sloan Kettering Hospital for almost 1 month.  There is very few things that Tim loves more than his job.  Tim is very proud to be a member of Local 1, and very proud of his work and the many jobs he completed.  I know he misses hanging and b.s.ing with the quys very much.  So if any of you have a few minutes and would like to drop him a get well card or a  note of best wishes I know it would go a long way to lift his spirits and help speed his recovery.  I see Tim almost every day so you can send them to our home and I'll see he gets them.          Tim Faranda

I AM THE WIFE OF JAMIE OLIVER AND WOULD LIKE TO THANK LIZ  FOR THE COMMENTS REGARDING GOSSIP BETWEEN "UNION BROTHERS AND SISTERS." I WILL NOT GET INTO THE WHOLE STORY, HOWEVER  JAMIE WORKED FOR OTIS FOR 19 YEARS  AND GOT HURT IN MAY OF 2004 AND WAS FIRED (HE HAD A NUMBER OF EXTRA MILE AWARDS  AND NOTHING NEGATIVE IN HIS FILE.)  WHEN HE WAS FIRED THE RUMORS STARTED FROM HIS  "UNION BROTHERS AND SISTERS"  (WHO WERE NOT THERE) AND RECEIVED NO SUPPORT THEM. THE SUPPORT HE RECEIVED WAS FROM THE UNION EXECUTIVE BOARD, WHICH I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT EXSPECIALLY THE SUPPORT EDDIE KRULL GAVE OUR FAMILY, AND HOW HARD GARY WORKED TO FIND THE JOB WHICH FIT JAMIE WELL. THEY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THEIR JOBS AND DID IT VERY WELL. (THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR LOOKING PASS THE RUMORS THAT WERE NOT TRUE, AND ALL THE HARD WORK YOU DID WHICH HIS "UNION BOTHERS AND SISTER DID WITH NO REGARD TO WHAT THIS WAS DOING TO HIM OR HIS FAMILY.)  WHEN OTIS AND THE OTHER COMPANIES LOCKED OUT THE UNION UNFAIRLY, BELIEVE ME JAMIE WROTE THAT $100 CHECK ON TIME TO SUPPORT  HIS "UNION BROTHERS AND SISTER", WHICH HE FELT STRONGLY ABOUT.  JAMIE GOES TO MOST OF THE MEETINGS. THE REASON I AM WRITING THIS IS BECAUSE THESE RUMORS "BELIEVE IT OR NOT, TWO YEARS LATER ARE STILL GOING ON EXSPECIALLY BY PEOPLE ON THE YONKERS OFFICE WHO NOT NOT THERE BUT THE MID-TOWN OTIS EMPLOYEES "UNION BROTHER AND SISTERS FEEL THE NEED TO CONTINUE THESE RUMORS AND LIES.  I OFTEN READ ON THIS WEBSITE ALL ABOUT SOLIDARITY.  I BELIEVE IT IS TIME TO PRATICE THIS. JUST LIKE EVERYBODY WHO WAS LOCKED OUT AND FELT THESE COMPANIES WERE WRONG, SO WAS OTIS IN JAMIE'S SITUATION, WHICH WAS PROVED WRONG  LETS STOP THESE RUMORS AND SUPPORT ALL OF OUR UNION BROTHERS AND SISTERS ALWAYS NOT JUST WHEN IT FITS THEM.  JUST LIKE BRIAN LINK ALWAYS SAYS AND BELIEVES LETS GET EDUCATED

New York State AFL-CIO Urges All Workers' Compensation Activists to Contact the Governor and State Legislature

Tell Them to Oppose Governor Pataki's Proposed Legislation (S.6461/A.9561) Because it Blames Disabled Workers And Let's The Insurance Industry Get a Free Ride

On Monday, March 13th, New York State AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes will participate in a Workers' Compensation Reform Roundtable discussion sponsored by Senate Labor Chair George Maziarz.

During the discussion, President Hughes will explain labor's opposition to the Governor's proposal, as well as any proposal that seeks to limit benefits for permanently disabled workers. President Hughes will call for a greater focus on industry profits within the system.

Click Here To Send A Message To Your Legislator

The insurance industry is mounting another attack on those New York workers who have or will become permanently disabled as a result of a workplace accident. We need your help to fight this attack.

The Governor, who is supporting the insurance industry over the permanently disabled, has proposed legislation (S.6461/A.9561) which would stop the payment after a period of time to permanently disabled workers' who have won their difficult battle and proved their case.

The New York State Workers' Compensation Insurance industry in 2004 received an additional 35 cents for every 39 cents paid to injured workers. The cost for handling claims by private insurance companies is too high.

It's time for elected officials and employers to stop blaming those who were disabled at work.  Workers' Compensation is just a line of insurance. This line costs too much to run and it's not the injured worker's fault.

Click Here To Send A Message To Your Legislator

The only way to improve the horribly broken system is for labor and employers to sit down and negotiate changes to fix this system without the attendance of those who feed off the misfortune of injured workers.

Employers continue to complain they pay too much in premiums, while injured workers benefits have not been increased in over 14 years.

Tell them to stop blaming disabled workers for the problems within the workers' compensation system.  Ask them to take a closer look at the insurance industry's costs and profits within the system.

I have to watch what I say on this page because  someone will cut and paste this article and somehow use it against me in the future.I am in a delicate situation at the moment ,but I have to say to everyone,Stop the gossip!!!!! You are your own worst enemies,A certain company loves it,you don't even know how you guys , with all your gossip, destroy your own co-workers and label your friends. You know the old saying, opinions are like ---holes,every ones got one,but they are opinions, perceptions, its like living inside the enquirer,a grain of truth and a mountain of tall tales,so and so cant fix this,so and so cant do that,so and so said this, and we believe the nonsense that comes from a group of people who would lock you out ,starve you and take your medical, and then just shake hands and say ,it wasn't us,They have a master degree in bullshit,They are Enron mutts who manipulate day after day,Is the technology they bring daily,. to better  serve the customer???How could less parts, less a mechanic cost more money from the consumer, yet they cant pay us what we are worth, its about getting rid of you and me, and yet we squabble and defend ourselves against each other every day, The company throws something out there and they watch the mice run with it,and my choice of word mice does not mean rat but merely a fast  rodent running through a pre made maze with the outcome already known. The carpenters union slogan is one more day to a stronger union, well I disagree once again, its now or never people because one more day to a stronger union and we may as well pack it in,Get up and get to your meetings, and card people everyday, Strength in numbers and I cant save the world by myself, Run for office if you've got something to offer But,Save the gossip for Ann landers, cause it has no place here, and Brian,I promise to get to a meeting as soon as my mom is out of the hospital. Today is March 5th Sunday, If you want to see a great Pipe and Drum group , come out to East Islip @ 2p.m. to see our own Local 1 Pipe and Drum group. The parade is on Montauk Highway ( main Street).

I wanted to reach out to sister Liz Neilson, I've been praying for your Mom , I hope she is recovering well.

In 12 days it will be exactly 1 year ( March 17th) that EMANY locked out their valuable, skilled and extremely dedicated Local 1 IUEC members. I will never forget that day, hopefully WE all will learn from our past situations. I continue to move on with our signed contract, I will always remain a devoted Local 1 IUEC member, I will always protect our work, I will always check other members FOR HIS/HER PAID up union card!!!! Please take what happened to us at as a lesson. Please be prepared for any changes that may come upon us whether its work, illness or a tragic situation. Over the course of the Lockout I found out the Quality of many other Local 1 members, we bonded together. My family life  (at home) has had its share of tragedy over the years. I have learned many lessons , you really know what kind of family and friends you have through some challenging times . I am extremely grateful for all I have. At HOME, at WORK and in my CHURCH and in my community.

I lost a good friend I made during the lockout, his name was Joseph G. Kelly he passed away suddenly on Friday January 13th.He was Local 27 Business Representative, like many others I met , talked to, emailed and even met during the lockout, Joe called me during the lockout. WHY? Because he wanted to know how I was doing , just like many other brothers from other Locals. Joe and I spoke about our families, we spoke about our challenges and how we should address them . He was a good man ! Joe Kelly, may you rest in peace! I will miss you.

PLEASE NEVER FORGET WHAT HAPPENED ON MARCH 17th, 2005!

To all my brothers and sisters from the international IUEC, their is only 16 months until the end of your contract. ARE YOU PREPARED. We need as individuals to learn how to prepare ourselves for the future. Lets continue to support and pray for Local 125 to get back to work, Thanks to Art Careen for keeping us informed.

The Elevator Constructor was again filled with insightful ,helpful articles. The note written by BA  Jim Chapman III from Local 12 Kansas City Missouri really hit home . Following is its message :::

  BA's Desk

With spring approaching and the exiting of winter. I hope the change in climate will help energize our membership. Brothers, we need a change in climate to take place in our industry and government. As union brothers/sisters and skilled craftsmen we must UNITE and protect the craft that has given us so much to all of us . AS union members we must be ACTIVE in our locals to provide ideas , knowledge and strength. AS craftsmen we must perform at a higher level than our untrained, under paid counterparts. As citizens we must be active in our local and federal gov't to protect the rights of working men and women. Brothers And Sisters , being a union member is not just collecting the wages and fringes that have been bargained for us, but rather a person who sets  the standards of our craft and takes the the responsibility to protect the rights of all workers in this country.

I encourage you to take an active role in your local and elect gov't officials who will protect the rights of working men and women .

     Jim Chapman III

Nice words brother Chapman, your message was right on , I want to acknowledge you for your INSIGHT!!

BE PREPARED , STAY INTERESTED AND INVOLVED BE PROUD TO CARRY A ELEVATOR UNION CARD ! WE ARE THE FINEST HIGHLY TRAINED AND EDUCATED LOCALS IN THE WORLD .

God Bless , In Solidarity Brother Brian Link

Hi everybody:
This note is to update our strike situation. We have surpassed the one year mark. That's right, Feb 25 05 is the day our strike against Otis and Kone began. There has not been a serious offer from the companies as of yet.It must because we are such a small local, that there is no short supply of scabs willing to fly in here to do our work. You see Otis has only 6 employees and Kone 1 so it does not take a lot manpower to answer calls.
We also have an organization: Construction Labor Relations Association (CLRA)that has the bargaining rights for all companies involved in construction work. Even though Thyssen has an agreement with its employees this (CLRA) will not ratify there agreement, therefor Thyssen cannot do any construction work. Thus Thyssen can only do maintenance work resulting in the lay off of their construction crews. Today of the 18 members in our union only six are working.
If you read the last issue of the constructor, the part about Local 102's agreement. Lets just say that we are the lowest paid local and the companies intend to keep it this way.
That is enough rambling from me and just hope that we have an agreement soon.

My intent of my post which I will get to in a moment was not to respond to brother  Brians's Post but I must...........Appreciate your love of the local Bri,appreciate all your posts  but with all due respect I have to say ... people give in different ways.It would be wonderful if all of us could make all the meetings but we cant and  for many different reasons but it doesnt mean we are not giving. Some send money and support funds above the mandatory contribution, some write to all congress people and any one who will help labor,Some go up to the rooms and volunteer there time,I personally wrote acting governor Cody 50 times  during the lockout to pass the N.J.unemployment bill,I now  need  clearence to enter Jersey...........but my point is, When you say over and over "the ones who arent at the meetings'" its a little offensive, because the majority of us do what we can in different ways,I secretly dropped orange oak tag all over the streets on my way to the last vote,it said my candidates name,No one knew,it was just my way of being involved and embarrassing my daughter, but that was my way of helping on the down low.so maybe you can reword it to a "chosen few."............Now for my post,I have been holding it in for 2 weeks now and i cant anymore..........i need 3000 prayers. marsha  Denenberg is being prepped for a triple bypass. She is the wife of the late Marty Denenberg, deceased local one member and she is my mother.Any one who has worked with me knows I was able to work unsual overtime hours because my mother would never pass up on watching her Grandkids, although thanks to her my 12 year old now needs gamblers anonymous.Anyway I have seen the prayers on this page work for many,so if i may ask ..........please say one for her, that she recover and get to enjoy her Grandkids and a few more local one picnics.please dont send flowers just a scratchoff ticket to.............just kidding.I am trying to be strong here. Thanks, liz

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I have 2 parts to my post tonight. 1st post- During the past the few weeks I have heard many members voice their concerns. As I have said in the past, life is full of too many chiefs, not enough INDIANS. We hear in all of our communities what is wrong with everything? But most people say " Its not my job? Its everyone Else's fault! When will it be your responsibility? I am extremely proud to be involved, interested in MY union, MY family and My commitment to my faith. I wake up everyday grateful for what I have ( not for  what I don't have ). Local 1 is OUR UNION, YOUR UNION. We all have the same 24 hours a day to make a positive difference. When you lace up your shoes everyday, ASK yourself one question. IS what I am doing today bringing me closer to my goals? If you don't get involved, you really have given up your right to complain! Life is full of changes, make a choice to RESPOND "positively". Whether their is 3000 members at  a Union meeting or 300, the truly concerned members are always there. Thanks for letting me voice my opinion. For all the outsiders, who continue to sit idly by? its time to put up or shut up Step up to the plate .

  2nd post-

Their is a very important election upcoming on Long Island , NY on February 28th in the 8th Assembly district. Unions are under attack. The candidate who is Labors choice is Ernie Mattace. His opponents platform is all ANTI union literature and radio ads against all " Organized Labor" As stated in the article , this should motivate all of us to re double our efforts to make sure we send a friend of organized labor up to Albany, NOT an enemy.

We are the Union

The Mighty Mighty Union

In solidarity , always concerned, always involved
