Kone is unveiling their new G.P.S. system this week.  They began
bringing us in, in small groups to get us familiar with the "Safety
Locater".  This lovely device will give them automatic updates every ten or eleven minutes, pinpointing our exact location to within ten feet.  We were shown on a graph how  they could tell when the tech left the building to grab a smoke or to put more money in a parking meter.  I think I know  how Martha Stewart feels.  We were also shown a graph where a tech closed out his call at 8:30, and was already 1.5 miles away from the job site at 8:29. How long do you think these injustices will be tolerated.  I think their intentions are pretty clear.  Remember Brothers and Sisters, we are all under the microscope. P.S. If we take G.P.S. and shove it up our %#@, they WILL find it!!!

PRESS RELEASE

NYC (08.16.2005) Plumber Apprentices wanted now in New York City.

Plumber apprenticeship job opportunities are opening September 6, 2005 in New York City. Plumbers Local Union No.1 Trade Education Fund will distribute 1000 applications for an estimated 100 positions as a union plumber apprentice.

Plumber apprenticeship job opportunities are opening this September in New York City. Plumbers Local Union No.1 and the Association of Contracting Plumbers of the City of New York will distribute 1000 applications for an estimated 100 positions as a union plumber apprentice. Distribution of applications will start at 8:00 AM on the morning of Tuesday, September 6, 2005. Apprenticeship in Plumbers Local Union No. 1 is not just a "job". It is a structured learning system that leads to a career. The education and experience received by an Apprentice Plumber is lifelong training for a career in the Plumbing Industry. Time tested methods of plumbing are combined with the science and innovation of the modern technological world. The starting pay rate is $10.78 per hour. It gets better, much better. As you learn more, you earn more. $25.38 per hour in wages and fringe benefits after 1 year, $30.33 per hour in wages and fringe benefits after 3 years, and $71.61 per hour in wages and fringe benefits after 5 years. There is no tuition, you only pay for your books. Apprentices work in the field and go to school one day every two weeks. The employer pays them for school time. Apprentices who successfully complete the training in this federal and state registered apprenticeship program are awarded certificates of completion and graduate to Journeyman Plumber status.

Work Description: Plumbing involves the installation and repair of a wide variety of piping systems and equipment. The majority of Local 1 plumbing work is in the commercial segment of building construction, but all aspects of the trade, from new construction to residential service and maintenance work, are performed by members of Plumbers Local Union No. 1. Every aspect of the job, from layout (or design) to the final installation of fixtures and maintenance of equipment, must be learned by the next generation in order for the craft of Plumbing to continue. The layout and installation of piping, plumbing fixtures and mechanical equipment are learned on the job. Blueprint reading, drawing, trade math, science, and plumbing code are taught in the related school program. The apprentice works under the direct guidance and supervision of an experienced journeyman plumber on the job, and an expert instructor when at the Plumbers Local 1 Training Center.

It is with great concern that when reading the article today in the newspaper regarding the strike with Northwest Airlines unionized mechanics. Safety I guess is not important? 2 Planes experienced problems the first day using "scabs" replacement workers, whatever you call them they are not Qualified. 1 plane blewout all tires upon landing and the other plane filled up with smoke while in flight.Regardless of why ? The one who pays is the PASSENGERS. The airline industry has already taken away too much from the Glue of the industry while the CEO's  continue to collect grand sums of money. REGARDLESS OF THEIR COMPANIES PERFORMANCE? Our main concern should be here in Local 1 and the international is to allign the dates for our contracts . So next time all these "out of towners" scabs cant do our work. Their was a comment in the St. Petersburg Times which was disturbing. "THIS STRIKE MAY BE OF HISTORIC IMPORTANCE," said Gary Chaison, aprofessor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. "Here members are on strike to save their jobs, and the rest of the labor movement refuses to help it. So much for solidarity." If you weren't t aware the rest of the northwest unionized force are working, the pilots, the flight attendants and many others. So when you see a Northwest Pilot tell him or her how you feel. Although I dont personally know any Northwest mechanics I will be pulling for them . How can we help? Don't fly northwest, don' t support anyone crossing their line. And If you happen to work or live nearby an airport support the brothers and sisters of Northwest , stop by and tell them how proud you are! Please keep families first , do your job and no one elses and work safe .If you have a neighbor who is out of work whether its northwest or any other trying situation, stop by with some words of encouragement or even some food. It wasnt that long ago when we here at Local 1 would have really appreciated any others concern for us. HOW GREAT DID IT FEEL WHEN THE IUEC SUPPORTED US!!!! Locals thruout the country and Canada need to STAND TALL we are and will always be family. Thanks for reading Respectfully submitted the cannonball king of the south "for now" Brother Brian Link card #1347

Hello Brothers and sisters. I signed on today for the first time in over a week. Im looking forward to the upcoming events. The  parade and golf outing for Brother Gary Haynes. We can use any help , any ideas regarding the Golf Outing. Even If you dont golf , If you sign on to website their are many ideas, donations or items to donate towards the main cause!!!!!! TO ASSIST BROTHER HAYNES IN HIS RECOVERY!!! We all need to help one another out , not just in time of need but always. But Brother Gary Haynes really needs us, you will get everything out of life If you just help others "sometimes less fortunate" get what they want! Although I dont know brother Bill Dutra or Tom Slattery or many others who are spending alot of their time towards the Gary Haynes  Cause , I FEEL VERY STRONGLY that these members need to be commended for all their hard work . Please never forget those who are less fortunate then you? Please never forget that we all have the same 24 hours a day, Its what we do with our day ? Lets continue to help one another at work, at home, & in our communities and within our own families and  our place of worship. Most of all make a choice to make a difference!!! You need an idea??? If you presently go to our union meetings, reach out to another brother or sister who doesn't usually attend. How about we show our elected officers how much WE appreciate how hard they worked for all of us during /before and after the lockout???? Why not look at the end of your own arm and ask yourself . Is this a hand that keeps taking or does it give and reach out to others? Regardless of how you voted on the contract we as a union need to move foward! Lets support one another and give our elected officers ideas and support them so they can REPRESENT  us for what we need and want and deserve. Families first! I would also love to hear from some of our brothers and sisters from the rest of the country and would like an update on the Strike up north in Canada??? To the rest of the country , I continue to be overwhelmed with the support we have received during our challenging time here in NY & NJ . Although I am on vacation, I still remain extremely trained , organized, and more proud then ever to be associated with such a fine group of people . I will continue to protect and preserve my work and assist my brothers and sisters at work as well as at home. My cannonballs have moved south til thursday, looking forward to a strong showing at parade and a great attended September meeting . You want results? Spend some time investing in YOUR LIVELYHOOD , I am very grateful to hold a paid up LOCAL 1 IUEC union card. Respectfully submitted Brother Brian Link . card #1347 My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Gary Haynes , and his devoted fiance Sissy. May God Bless You Both

Recently it was brought to my attention that kids of all ages are sucking on cans of air that you use to clean your keyboards at home.Several kids are now dead.I sat my kids down and asked if this were true? They said yes ,of course my  kids famous answer is "we only tried it once and we will never do it again."I then sent the information to a friend far away who lives in" not my kids land,"she asked her kids,The oldest said never !but the younger one ratted  the older one out,and they all had done it.This canned air is like breathing carbon monoxide, there will be no ambulance coming!!! It is a hit or miss, live or die.In my house it sits by my computer no more,In fact I am not even buying it anymore and my new assault I am unleashing is to have it locked up with the spray paint, although many are just taking it from home. Please help get the word out. These are not older teens doing this ,10 year olds are  hip to it.They say it is a 3 second dizzy  kind of feeling. So please lock up the air and inform everyone.

Dear brothers and sisters

Yesterday a good brother passed away… I was saddened by the news of Bobby’s Klaum untimely death…. There are times when life just seems to be so unfair. During the 9/11 disaster Bobby and his partner Joe Flannagan were the mechanics at 7 World Trade center for Otis Elevator.. that day these two individuals showed the world what being a Local one member and a hero was all about ..during the chaos that ensued and as the twin towers disintegrated, there were multiple entrapments in the building and instead of running out the building as most people did, they went back in and successfully reset every elevator they encountered freeing countless people from what would have been certain death....they accomplished this moving through office corridors filled with smoke and not once wavered in their quest…A Hero is a person that does what he has to do when he has to do it often times regardless of ANY consequences…Very few people know about this ... I had the privilege of working with him many years in two departments for Otis Elevator. In repair his knowledge of roping and machine work was unequaled. Bobby made the transition from  the Repair Dept to the maintenance Dept and became the mechanic at a standby job downtown.. During the lockout that job cancelled their contract and Bobby was left homeless.. As the lockout ended and much to my surprise, for his many years of good and dedicated service and for his heroic efforts on 9/11 representing Otis Elevator Co…. the company laid him off…it’s inconceivable that a man with that kind of talent and that much to offer was just tossed aside like a used rag…but that is a subject for another post.. During the lockout we often found each other at the various rallies and union meetings, he spoke of the uncertainty of his future with the company in view of his job cancelling… Yet his spirit remained hopeful that things would be alright.. When I was in the Repair dept I often consulted him about problems I encountered and he always was willing to help me and or even come over to where I was and personally show me how to do it..  This is typical of our brothers in Local One.. however Bobby excelled at it ..when you needed him he would come in the rear entrance of the building and after he helped you he would exit through that same rear entrance.. with no fanfare. We lost a good a decent brother yesterday ..and his memory will forever be alive in the hearts of those that knew him. Sadly however I never met his family; even though foe years  we often discussed our family issues.. My heart goes out to his sons and his wife.. I can’t imagine the pain and the utter sadness and grief she’s going through as she ponders about life without him…I pray God in his infinite mercy ministers to her heart and gives her the courage to accept the reality of the moment with hope and dignity .

We’re not privileged to know why these events befall us. We’re just called upon to accept them as God’s divine will.. I exhalt all my brothers an sisters to walk humbly with your God for no one is promised tomorrow and live today as if it is your last one.. Brother Klaum may be gone but will never be forgottened…

Sadly yours ..

The Colon family

It was with great sadness I read this morning of the passing of Beverly Meadus. I  am also sad that I will be away for 2 weeks and won't be able to support and send my personal condolescences to Teddy . The Meadus family is one of the finest examples of what Local 1 is all about! I  had the pleasure to work with Teddy Meadus while  he was a Port Authority elevator/ escalator at JFK Airpoort. My thoughts and prayers are with the Meadus family. Through the unfortunate tragedy of  John Meadus , I was so honored to meet Johns wife Theresa and his daughter, who had just beacame a mom for the first time. One thing that stood out when I met Johns family , was they really loved one another, Johns daughter was so excited to meet any of Johns "brothers at work". To my brother Teddy Meadus I am truly sorry for this difficult time brought upon you, may God Bless you and give you strength  . My thoughts and prayers are with the Meadus family. Please brothers and sisters live your life with fullness , spend as much time with your family , spend quality time with one another. My thoughts and payers are with the Meadus family and with brother Gary Haynes ,who is doing his best for a full recovery, also thank you  brother Fred Mc Court for keeping us informed Respectfully submitted Brother Brian Link card #1347

I went out to see Gary tonight with Lee Perrone and what a great night it was. Gary knew who we were and he was very alert and very happy because he just got to have ice cream for the first time since the accident. He looked great and his attitude is unbelievable. He is really one of the strongest people I have ever met. Keep up the prayers because he is not totally recovered yet. Thanks, Freddie

Hello brothers and sisters.Hopefully all is well. Just wanted to send out my prayers and support to Gary Haynes for a full recovery. I was glad today when I  went to a new construction job to see WHO WAS doing the work. The main point is what if? who installed it? hydros go in so quickly, so catch em If you can.  Well the bottom line Is the job was being done by Local 1 mechanics. So my lunch hour was well spent. Please continue to check jobs, please continue to work safe, please look after one another. And If you happen to come across some non-union work being done , dont hate them EDUCATE THEM!!!They deserve the same opportunity that all working families deserve. We are up against one of biggest influx of Illegal immigrants in our country how long before they come after OUR jobs?  Call your business agent and introduce them to how well educated union people are. Some of the finest brothers  ( who previously were non union)I have ever met or worked with have become the STRONGEST union members. I read the last elevator constructor some of the finest IUEC members were organized, It was with great pride I read these articles, when they had the choice they made their choice UNION, FAMILY FIRST, please do not under estimate what we as union members are UP against. Dare them a to step across the line in the sand , SO WE CAN BOTH BE ON THE SAME SIDE! Well Im on vacation for  2 weeks , so Im sure many of you will be happy that my posts will be missing? But I will always remain educated well trained and proud to be a paid card carrying union member of Local 1.On a personal note thanks to Tony Carudo for always answering my questions. Well Im moving my famous south shore cannonball to the Western Caribbean SEE YA Work safe Brother Brian Link cards #1347
