I read awhile ago that ENAMY sent out a propaganda stating how much the "Valued Employees" have lost from not working (LOCKED OUT).  Let's look at the other side.  If you only earned $1.00/hour more, that would end up being over $50,000 over your career.  How does a year off with pay sound ?  That's not mentioning the additional thousands that you would earn by getting paid double time rather than 10% or 15% or straight time for their "Flex hours".  The ones managing these co's would use their same "management template" if they where managing a Bakery, Hair Salon, Insurance Co. etc.  They don't realize or understand that WE,  the IUEC FRONT LINE, are the COMPANY.  THEY NEED US!!!  The longer they f*&k around, the more business goes to other co's.  If they keep this up long enough they won't have any employees to come back.  If I could have one wish, it would be that none of the smaller companies that have grown due to the ENAMY LOCKOUT do NOT sell their co's to ENAMY.  Because ENAMY will use the $ that they screwed out of their customers to buy back their Maintenance base.  My dream is that it will be said:  "Remember back in 20 05 when ENAMY tried to stick it to the IUEC workers in NYC, Yeah that's when it started to all turn around.    All those guys out playing golf and going out to lunch realized that someone has to pay for it. (then they realized) all those guys in the field (working for a living) are responsible for all the b&%%$#t that is being taken for granted.  WOW can you imagine, a city, no a whole country being taken advantage of like that.  And they thought PROPAGANDA was something that Hitler did.  It is really the PEOPLE that make this country work.  It's not that 1% that control most of the money.  WOW,  if it wasn't for the IUEC in NYC the working people would just be getting screwed over, boy are we lucky THEY stood up for ALL OF US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"  Who would have thought so few people could make such a difference.

THE STRONGEST PREDATOR IS THE ONE PROTECTING HIS HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lucky me, the Emany group alerted me of their willingness to settle this "LOCK-OUT". How nice of them. Gee, do you think that having to pay unemployment has anything to do with that? Hey "RAY" Do you remember me? I'm the guy at the union meeting who wouldn't take his hat off. Removing my hat would have been a salutation of respect. Something that at "that" time I didn't have for our union leadership. After getting beat up repeatedly for a few years, I was fed up. I'm also the guy who had a lot to say at the rooms, at the Schindler meeting, because of all the abuse we at Schindler have had to put up with. The new union leadership won me over from that meeting. What you "DO" speaks so loudly, that I can not hear what you say. I am so proud of our union leaderships actions, from that meeting till today. That I thought I'd take the time to publicly apologize to you all of you.I look forward to removing my hat the next time we meet. I know it must be hard to hold steady, when all you have to do is say "YES" to the big bully across the table, and BANG the lock-out is over. But make no mistake, We are 100% behind you. The tough part is over. We're now going to collect a check after 10 weeks. Just think, in 3 and a half months, we'll be able to pull our entire annuity, and pay off our mortgages (those of us with enough in our annuities) Whatever leverage the Emany group thought it had- It is now gone. I'm a brutally honest guy, On March 17th I would have voted yes for 4% per year ,if they didn't' want give-backs. Not any more. These next 3, or 4 years are the base for the next contract, and due to the disrespectful way Emany has handled themselves. I will not vote yes, for anything under 7,7,7 with NO GIVEBACKS. I have never walked away from a fight in my life, and it seems to me that Emany is teetering. Stay the course, hopefully the so called "men"(Obviously I use that word loosely ) who are responsible for the Emany groups actions, will all  be terminated for the absolutely unacceptable actions they have taken. I'm not so sure that even if they are all fired, that the level of loyalty these companies once enjoyed can ever be restored. I look forward to this very personal challenge. Oh yeah, if these Postings do in fact hurt us when we go back to work. I'm a 20 year Westinghouse/Schindler construction/Service adjuster that Otis, and Schindler had a bidding war over. I stayed with Schindler (Otis offered me more money and O.T.) because of LOYALTY. So if anyone's looking for a mechanic, I guess I'll be available SOON . . .

Hey there.. Went to emany's site today and

sent them an email on my opinion. How dare they say on the site Local 1 unwilling to negotiate start times.. I told them it sickens me they would even consider taking away the opportunity for an iuec member to eat dinner w/ our families at a decent hour, spend time with our kids and for those single parent have their kids raised by someone else! If they had it their way iuec would be working when the kids are at home on a regular basis... I guess they don't know the joy of spending precious time with the ones we love!

I just want to say Thank you to the negotiating team we elected. We did not elect the most experienced team but the team that would best represent us better than the last regime. The last regime was to easy in my opinion. Why? you ask? take your best guess.  We have the regime who has balls enough to fight for what we deserve! Electricians in NJ received a over 4$ hour raise per year for 4 years their last contract 2 years ago. We received squat in my opinion(poor negotiating, no balls) but we voted on it and accepted it!!!!! Boo on us.  If I remember correctly we were told "this the best we can get"...........yeah  ok....NOT THIS TIME.....

Lets go for the long hall....WE DESERVE WHATS RIGHT...

If we give up anything, we will lose it FOREVER.......

NO GIVE BACKS.....I'm hurting too, but to give in now, is a SIN.

Ray, we elected you and we back you 110%. Do Whats right!

When I started in 1980, our wage was in the top 5 trades....Now we are where?........In the top 30 (closer to 30)  SCREW THIS...

Garbage men make as much as we do. Nothing against sanitation engineers but I think we require alittle more knowlege...LOL...

My point is, no give backs, NO GPS, NO SHIFT WORK, and WE HOIST  ELEVATOR EQUIPMENT! Who brings up electrical panels? Who brings up sheet rock? Who bring up tile? Who brings up brick? They all bring up their own equipment...

Can anyone tell me a union building trade that has shift work?

I will make do! I will survive! and WE will PREVAIL.

See you soon at work at 8am.

Today i put in my unemployment claim for the week, when i finished i checked to see when my first check was sent out. A pop up stated "Their was no claim under my ss#", so i called the phone number that was listed. I was told that my claim (2nd time) was no good ,because i filed it on may 5th and  may 9th was the first day i could do so. I was told to file a new claim, them call and have the starting date changed. So i went on line and started to file my (3rd) claim. After the first page, up came another note "session terminated you can not file a new claim if you have an existing claim".        So now i'm back on the phone with the dept of labor, and told that i don't need a claim, and that The first guy adjusted the dates already. I answered some questions and was told that i should get a check in a few days.  (maybe he wasn't sure)   He said for me to put in my next claim on Sunday, and call back Monday to checkup on claims status!!!!!!             On another note, it's about 9 week that we have been locked out, so if it takes a little longer to get a fair contract, so be it.  Also, i would like to thank all the brothers and sisters of the I.U.E.C. for their support

STAY STRONG!

This has been An eye opening time for me and I guess for all of us. I have been In the union for  five years now. I am just now seeing how important it is to be involved . In the past I was in another trade and and the union was just a place you sent your dues. Winter would come and I would be home until spring. Nobody was fighting for me or helping me out. Local one has shown me support and taught me to be proud . The team that we have  fighting for us is unbelievable . These guys are working their hardest  to get the best for us and our families. Thank you for everything. My wife finally now understands what they are doing for us. When I exlained what the problem with shift work is , she had a whole new understanding  of what we are fighting for. For my job to tell me that I am to start at 12:00 and work until 8:30 and for straight time is rediculous. That means no  time to be with the family.  Emany is still trying to sound like the good guys and make us out to be the bad guys. This is a load of crap . Stop with the lies and the propaganda. Stand your ground  and thank you to all for  your support out there.

Kevin was right on with his POST. WE ALL OWE Ray Hernandez alot more then a cold after this is all over . Tommorrow is 9 weeks , and I couldnt be more proud of what OUR LOCAL has done for US. I also wanted to thank all the brothers from other Locals who have sent me uplifting, supporting emails. Support from around the country is OVERWHELMING!!!! I was also asked about Local 1 tee-shirts , from many brothers around the country to support us!!! And to also wear them with pride . I left messages with the hall , but If anyone could assist me , the faster the better. I also had very mixed feelings about our first unemployment check today. I have never been a person who asked for anything , for those who know me , I always ask others what I can do for you? But you know what I was locked out by a bunch of greedy corporate " bottom feeders". I changed my mind immediately, I have been paying my taxes proudly for over 25 years .My family is a very proud group, but when people steal food off your table? Or if someone or something pushes you ??? Your response is to PUSH BACK! IT IS WITH GREAT PRIDE that I can say I am extremely proud of what I have been doing for MY family, my customers, my brothers and sisters and my trade "LOCAL 1 IUEC ". Its such an overwhelming feeling when people fight for what they deserve, I have been overwhelmed by the support and the unconditional support I have witnessed by many brothers and sisters. I reamin proud, educated and well trained. I look foward to going back to work!! " BUT FOR NOTHING LESS THEN WHAT WE DESERVE NO GPS NO FLEXTIME , No Hoisting . I would just like to speak my mind on this flextime and how it would completely destroy our family values!! How flextime would remove any level of "sanity" for those who enjoy seeing their kids and spouses at anytime. Please remmber brothers and sisters FLEXTIME IS SHIFTWORK !!!!! My main concern is in a city like NYC which never sleeps, which has many 24 hour buildings , many 24 hour contracts. Their is NO REASON for shiftwork aka FLEXTIME except for corporate greed. We have been locked out by EMANY for 9 WEEKS lets not and I will repeat lets not go back for anything LESS then what we deserve!!! ARE YOU IN? .............Big shout out to Peggy Bender !! Her JOb may be listed as Local 1 clerk , but we all she is another true unsung hero of Local 1. She commits her time for OUR Local unconditionally! She doesnt complain . She is a GIVER, not a taker > I am extremely grateful for these people who give their time and efforts 24/7 UNCONDITIONALLY Respectfully submitted Brother Brian Link NO MORE GIVEBACKS !!!  good news i just received an unemployment check now I am going to the store and buy $400 worth of beer. But on a serious note what happens to the status of our unemployment if we vote down a tentative agreement? not that i think our leadership would present us with a contract that is not worth ratifying. But it would be nice to be informed of what could happen. If this LOCKOUT taught us anything (it's you never know). I am now and always 100% behind our negotiating team.

Good Morning brothers and sisters….

Although progress in these negotiations seem to move slowly.. Let’s not forget that it's winning small battles that ultimately wins a War…It’s taking one hill a at time that accomplishes an objective.. We have the very best possible team out there negotiating on our behalf. If this situation was an easy one to resolve then perhaps the gain may not necessarily be that beneficial.. It is in our struggle our moments of weakness that we will be made strong

A Patriot once said.. ”Where there is no struggle, there can be no progress..” We struggle but we don't lose heart, Some of us may fall but with the help of our union and our brothers we get up on our feet, there are days when our spirits are down… yet our spirits are uplifted by the solidarity of our entire membership.. In a way this lockout has been both a curse and a blessing at the same time.. A curse because; At least speaking for myself, I see the dark side of these folks. I don’t see how some of the relevant decisions are being made locally, which is why these companies are caught up in an ever increasing profits at all cost spiral… There are people behind the scenes far from here pulling the strings and some of these local company official don’t have enough courage to stand up and tell it like it is…In the other hand this lockout has been a blessing because it has served to galvanize our union. The outpouring of support and the busloads of brothers showing up at our rallies and picket lines (even in inclement weather) was good for the soul., The communications and generosity from the brothers around the country.. has been phenomenal to say the least.. Thank You brothers for your contributions and your moral support, rest assured that we will be there for you should you need us in 2007…

I want to make a special mention of all the brothers out there that sacrifice so much by taking time from their families to hold the lines, set up the rallies and sniff out the scabs wherever they hide.. I think is important to make our presence felt.. We’re in a war and as such every body counts…and speaking about war let me leave you with this quote…from John Stuart Mill…which by the way adequately expresses my sentiments on the issue of getting involved….

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things…..

The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth going to war for, is much worse.

The person who has nothing for which he’s willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety or comfort ..is a miserable creature, And has no chance at all of being free unless made or kept so by the exertions of better men than himself”

Nuff said…

All the best to our negotiating team ..you guys are doing an awesome job..

You have our blessings and our support…

Fraternally

Vinny

As I sit here another day LOCKED OUT, waiting for my unemployment check, I have become quite angry AGAIN. The "scabs" working , are making money "hand over fist", and I am waiting for a 405.00 check, minus taxes, 360.00. This all could have been averted. So, if and when we go back , I am going to remember this day for quite awhile. The first day back, I will be wearing a condom, because I am going to do to them, what they did to us.

I believe Ray Hernandez and our negotiating team deserve  a standing ovation for the job they are doing. They have had to listen to and put up with a lot of BS these last 3 months. They are representing our Union well and with pride. I also have had the pleasure of associating with Tony Carudo over the years and between the 2 of these Local 1 members I cant SAY ENOUGH about the cloth they both come from!! You see they are fighting for Local 1 rights and issues ALL THE TIME ! THEY ARE STANDING UP FOR WHAT WE DESERVE ALL THE TIME. I also has had some of the best times with these 2 brothers off the job . Elevator Work Is Slowed by Lockout of Mechanics

Published: May 23, 2005

Getting an elevator fixed or installed is not so simple these days across much of the metropolitan area because of a continuing dispute between the region's largest elevator companies and their unionized mechanics.

In March, the three companies that maintain 40 percent of the region's elevators - Otis, Kone and Schindler - locked out their 1,200 mechanics after negotiations for a new contract fell apart. Since then, the companies have been making do with service crews imported from their other locations or cobbled together from their office and supervisory staffs.

As a result, installation of equipment has stopped at several apartment complexes and commercial buildings, and some building managers report that repair crews sent to fix existing elevators have been slower to arrive. But other tenants and commercial clients said that, in their buildings, the temporary crews have done a surprisingly good job of keeping pace with repairs.

"Early on I was very concerned," said Marie Purnell, 74, president of the tenant association at Starrett City, a 46-building residential complex in the East New York section of Brooklyn where Schindler maintains the aging elevators and had been installing new ones. "But then as the time has gone on, it hasn't been as bad as I anticipated."

Still, the project to replace the elevators at Starrett City is now delayed while talks continue between the companies and members of Local 1 of the International Union of Elevator Constructors. Several construction officials said the labor dispute threatens to delay some projects in Manhattan.

The companies are scheduled to install the elevators in the new Hearst building being built on 57th Street at Eighth Avenue, the new research lab for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and 7 World Trade Center. At Stuyvesant Town, an apartment complex on the East Side of Manhattan, the replacement of elevators, work that tenant leaders say is badly needed, had to be suspended.

"This situation is affecting large and small projects throughout the city," said Charles Murphy, general manager of the New York office for Turner Construction, which is involved in the Hearst and Sloan-Kettering projects.

Any quarrel over elevator maintenance is a matter of anxiety in a city forested with high-rises. "We're continuing to function but there is clearly a concern," said Steven Spinola, president of the Real Estate Board of New York, which represents many of the city's largest landlords.

"Obviously, they are not at full capacity," Mr. Spinola said of the companies, "and we want to make sure they are at full capacity."

According to several construction executives, everyone in the industry is closely watching the dispute because any agreement with Local 1 is expected to set a precedent for the rest of the construction unions, many of whose contracts expire in a few weeks. The contract offered by the companies, one of whom services elevators at The New York Times, calls for a wage increase of 21.5 percent over four years. Local 1 members, who typically make about $65,000 to $70,000 year in base salary, are asking for a 23 percent package.

The companies are also seeking a change in construction site rules that would make installation work more efficient in an increasingly nonunion environment.

Padraic D. Riley, spokesperson for the Elevators Manufacturers Association of New York, which represents the three companies, said, "We need to get those productivity improvements to compete in this market."

Together, Kone, Schindler and Otis install a large portion of the elevators in the metropolitan area and hold the maintenance contracts for 38,000 elevators and escalators, Mr. Riley said. Meanwhile, Local 1, with 2,900 members, is the largest of three unions that represent elevator workers in the region. In recent years the local has been blemished by a federal labor racketeering investigation that led to the indictment of several former leaders.

The union has already reached an agreement with 48 smaller companies in the region. But negotiations with Otis, Schindler and Kone fell apart on March 17 when the contract expired and the companies locked out the mechanics. The city immediately replaced Kone Elevator on a project at Shea Stadium so that everything would be ready for Opening Day of the baseball season, according to Matthew Monahan, assistant commissioner of the Department of Design and Construction.

City transportation officials said that Kone also initially had trouble keeping pace with breakdowns at the Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan where riders board the Staten Island Ferry. "Escalators and elevators have not been serviced as quickly as we'd like," said Kay Sarlin, spokeswoman for the Department of Transportation, "but the company has performed responsibly and made several repairs."

At Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, though, officials canceled their contract with Otis after what they described as the company's failure to respond to several service calls. And Bradley Cohen, director of operations at BSR Management, said responses to repair calls in buildings he manages have been slower in the nine weeks since the lockout began. The mechanics showing up are competent, he said, but unfamiliar with the area.

"They don't know where to park the car," he said. "They can't find the key to the elevator. They don't know the idiosyncrasies of each elevator."

Mr. Riley said the companies would not comment on individual contracts. But he said that the companies are convinced the lockout has not had an impact on service, an assessment shared by several tenant advocacy groups and large commercial landlords in interviews over the past week. "Things are running as normal," Mr. Riley said.

Nonetheless, elevator complaints filed in New York City for the period of the lockout are up 29 percent since it began, according to Building Department statistics. Jennifer Givner, a department spokeswoman, said the agency is not sure the increase is related to the labor dispute since the tally includes elevators serviced by all companies.

Although a federal mediator has entered the talks, tensions do not seem be abating. In a letter to the membership last week, Local 1 President Raymond Hernandez acknowledged that several union mechanics have been charged with making threatening phone calls, damaging equipment or assault in cases related to the lockout. The union's leadership condemns any violence, the letter said.

Union leaders say the real safety issue is the company's use of what they describe as unskilled people to make repairs. "I've seen office cleaners trying to fix elevators," said Edward Krull, a union business agent. He said union mechanics receive four years of training and must pass a certification exam.

Mr. Riley said such comments were just a scare tactic. "People who are working on elevators are fully qualified," he said.

Mr. Spinola said the real estate industry hopes the impasse does not extend too much longer, recalling the last major labor battle in the elevator market, a strike in 1972. "The last strike lasted seven months," he said. "That's an unacceptable possibility."
