Comments: The Scabs-They Sacrifice Themselves Like Lambs at The Corporate Slaughter
The scabs that have been led to New York are a pathetic lot. Our wages and fringes will dictate their salaries and fringes. They know this, yet they still allow themselves to be led to New York. Bah, Bah. Some have said either recently or during past negotiations “I hope that you guys get a good raise, so that we can get one too.” Yet they allow themselves to be led to New York to defeat their own financial package. Bah, Bah. They may receive some instant gratification (bonuses) for their loyalty to their master, but in the end (today, tomorrow or five years from now) their value will be a reflection of our value. Still they allow themselves to be led to New York. Bah, Bah. Some may have family in either our Local Union or International Union. Their family may work for the same employers that presently have us locked out. They betray their family as their master leads them to New York. “Take my son, but please don’t hurt me.” Bah, Bah. Do not take pity on them as they make a choice. A choice to betray themselves and their families. The corporations will be coming for them next. While in their hometowns, or here in New York they may portray themselves as “The Boss”. The fact of the matter is they are servants. They may, while playing the role of super, talk like lions.....but they sacrifice themselves like lambs at the corporate slaughter.
Comments: RE: Mr. Lauterbach's Letter of 3/24/05:
Mr. Lauterbach addresses the letter "Dear Otis Colleague". We are not his colleagues - remember, we were LOCKED OUT. What a fine example of bargaining in good faith!
What Mr. Lauterbach and his COLLEAGUES at EMANY forget is that we are the face of their respective companies. Any trust and good faith relationships established with the signatories to their construction, service and mod contracts was done so by the hard work of LOCAL ONE members.
EMANY - recognize that fact and return to the table and bargain in GOOD FAITH.
SEE YOU AT 34th and Eleventh tomorrow!
Comments: Brothers and Sisters, As most of you are aware of there is a rally at the Otis Office Monday . It is located at 34th street between 10th and 11th avenue. If were not aware of it you are now. The weather is suppose to be shitty but do not use this as an excuse to not show up. We need to show up and let the assholes at Otis know why we are there. Remember they are not allowing you to work and pay your bills. They want you to accept an unreasonable contract proposal. We need to show up in large numbers, be vocal about what we think of their proposals and show these assholes our solidarity. See you Monday and bring your rain gear. Kevin t. Berry
Comments: Happy Easter to all and remember, the only way we can win this is together.

Comments: This is the date of the first World Trade Center bombing. I have in my hands the April 1993 edition of the “Otis Bulletin”. The cover headline reads; OTIS WORLD TRADE CENTER HEROES LEAD RESCUE EFFORT AND PUSH THE LIMITS OF SERVICE. The article headlines read; OTIS CREWS DISPLAY HEROISM AFTER WORLD TRADE CENTER BOMBING. FOLLOWING THE EXPLOSION, OTIS MECHANICS LED THE RESCUE OF AN ESTIMATED 500 TRAPPED PASSENGERS. The first paragraph reads; The Otis World Trade Center associates’ response to the Feb. 26 bombing can only be characterized as heroic. Paragraph three reads; They don’t treat their mission lightly. Mechanics and helpers put themselves in harm’s way to rescue people during the crisis, and they worked around the clock for weeks afterward to complete repairs. The rest of the article starting at paragraph nine reads; No one had to ask the mechanics to volunteer. In fact, police and fire authorities relied on the Otis team, because the mechanics - all Otis veterans with decades of World Trade Center experience among them - know the complex so well they say they can navigate it as if by instinct. Which is almost what was required. The bomb immediately disrupted power in Tower A (One World Trade Center), and some 30 minutes after the explosion, the local utility company cut power to the complex as a precaution for the safety of the firefighters. All lights went out, and elevators stopped where they were. An estimated 500 passengers were trapped. With 50-lb air tanks strapped to their backs and flashlights in their hands, the mechanics climbed the stairwells to the machine rooms, where selectors displayed elevator locations. But with a quarter-mile of steps to the upper floors, rescue workers knew that reaching high-rise machine rooms would take time. So authorities used helicopters to airlift another group to the roof in order to hasten upper-floor machine-room access. Thirteen people volunteered for that duty. “The police explained to us that they couldn't land the helicopter,” says Maintenance Mechanic Darby Dent. “They planned to lower us down. We didn’t know what lowering us down meant, but we all said, “Let’s do it; let’s get these people out of the elevators.” The helicopters did land, but the landing was anything but routine. Tower A has no helipad, and radio and television antennas dot the roof. The helicopter had to knock off some of those antennas out of the way to make room for its landing. “The second helicopter arrived for us, and I said a little silent prayer and jumped in, “ Helper Chris Ortiz says, “We took off and went out over the Hudson River and did a loop to gain altitude, and then we came down, boom, right onto the [Tower B] helipad.” The groups entered the buildings through rooftop doors and split up: Some mechanics worked in pairs to release the machine brakes, while others spotted elevators on selectors or led rescue workers to the cabs. The mechanics making their way up through the stairwells also split up. Two groups happened upon one another on the 63rd floor in Tower A. They were relieved to discover that their colleagues were still okay. Throughout the operation, the mechanics listened to two-way radio reports of possible additional bombs in the stairwells. By 10 p.m. the Otis crews had freed all passengers, among them a group of some 40 kindergartners and their teacher. The class had been on a field trip and was trapped for six hours in the 9 1/2- X 11 1/2- foot observation car. World Trade Center Location Manager Pete LaGow, who was at a meeting uptown and spent the early part of the crisis in a cab on his way downtown, has only high praise for the field associates’ performance. “They knew exactly what to do,” he says. “They took charge. They did a super job. The cleanup required 24-hour operations, two shifts of 12 hours. The customer, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, requested that every elevator be checked thoroughly, whether or not the explosion affected it. Otis President J.P. van Rooy visited the field associates a few days after the blast and thanked them for their dedication and courage. “You have made your company very proud of you,” he told the crews. “On my way into the building, our customer stopped me to say that the Otis people here acted with the highest degree of professionalism. You have made our customer very happy to be working with Otis.” WOW! So what is the point of this dissertation and journey to yesteryear? What office boy fails to grasp is being an Elevator Constructor is not just a job, it’s a way of life. It gets in your blood. In twelve short years we’ve gone from “heroes” leading a major disaster rescue operation in one of the biggest buildings (“The place is a city in itself” quoting from paragraph two, sentence three in the above article) in one of the biggest cities in the world to no better than drywall tapers (no offense to sheetrockers), and being told that Otis no longer needs our services, “There is no more work for you”. They think they can bring in a bunch of fifty something supervisors from across the country who haven’t used a meter and tools in years, and everything will be just peachy keen. Most of these guys go into the office because they can’t take the field anymore. The only people they are deceiving is themselves. I realize there is a lot of stockholder pressure to keep the price of UTX stock on the rise. I am a stockholder and I love watching it skyrocket. I’ve noticed a big change in Otis since the MBA’s (Mind Boggling Assholes) took control in the mid nineties. They’ve cut the flesh away, then the muscle, and now they are carving on the bone. We are the engine that propels the elevator industry locomotive. I refuse to stand by idle and watch a snot nose MBA climb another rung of the corporate ladder at my expense. They can kiss my dago ass! STAY STRONG LOCAL 1, AND BE PROUD, VERY PROUD YOURSELVES AND WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING! Rest in peace brother Charles Costello.
Comments: It makes me sick to be working for one of the "Big 3" while my Local 1 Brothers are locked out. All of us who work for the employers locking you out, across the country, should walk. Just my own personal opinion. Stay united. There is stregnth in numbers.
Eric W. McClaskey Local 8 E. Board
Comments: On behalf of all your elected officers of Local One IUEC, I want to reiterate the importance of the rally on 34th Street Monday morning. We want all hands on deck (which includes our working members) to spend some time on the line Monday. Bad weather is not an excuse! Come out and support the cause!

Comments: Member of local 83 interested in news of lockout, President for over twenty years. Good luck on your negotiations. Kelly
Comments: Local 2 stands behind you guys. Just a thought. Kone Chicago has a policy of everyone "checking in" and "checking out" every day and telling them where we are...for Safety...they tell us. Hmm...but why is it that when you forget to "check out" at the end of the day they never call you or your family to see if you're ok. You just get yelled at later that week. For safety...I think not. Also, I told my boss..."give me a couple weeks notice when Kone starts GPS"...so I can give him mine. I don't want to work for a company that doesn't trust me. Good Luck...stay strong.
Comments: Brothers, If you give in on GPS, then you might as well get ready for 200 traction units per route and some putz in your office telling it would be faster if you took this train instead of that bus to get to that job and you'll save so much time that way we can add 25 more units to your route. In short you can answer more calls more effectively, maint.? whats that, you can do that while your on a call, can we bill them for that too? At least thats the way I see it. Best wishes and stay strong everyone I've spoke to here in local 74 wishes you well and is behind you all the way.
Comments: Remember the proverb "You Get What You Pay For" Well these 3 conglomerates claim that the customers are not willing to pay for overtime,Right? Well if Schindler in particular is raising their prices by 5.5% then as I see it,they either pay for the overtime by allotting X amount of $$$$$$$ from their price increase to their customers to compensate their hard working employees OR they get 8 hours period. My husband is not a cemetery worker and will not be on a graveyard shift. Will management will be reachable through GPS or telephone on their graveyard shift at 2 0'clock in the morning? Happy Easter to All Sincerely, Maria Kowalski
Comments: This is the letter that was passed out to all neighbors of a Scab named John Soutar.(Schindler) Dear Neighbors, First of all, we would like to say Happy Easter to you and your families. It has come to our attention that one of your neighbors, John Soutar, has been actively working as a scab. Schindler Elevator Corporation is currently locking out its union members from working and making a living. John Soutar has chosen to cross that lockout line. The people that are currently locked out are the very same people that John has worked side by side with for years. How could John do this to his brothers and sisters who have helped feed and clothe his family all these years? That is the answer that we are looking for. We just wanted to let John know that we know what he is doing and to let his neighbors know what kind of a man he really is. He has to be a disgrace to his father who has been a proud union member for over thirty years. John's own brother is a locked out union member while he chooses to sneak around at night doing his own bloods work. What kind of person turns his back on his union brothers and sisters, family, and friends in their most difficult time of need? Thank you for your patience. Yours Truly, A proud active member Local 1 I.U.E.C Happy Easter all. Hold that line and God Bless!

Comments: Stranger in a Strange Land. A Scab in NYC. Do you actually believe these scabs can handle a typical day in the life of an Elevator Mechanic? It won't take long before these guys run for the hills and maybe refuse to come to our lovely city. After a week or so, they'll start to realize they bit off more then they can chew(chew on this!) Imagine hearing a conversation between some real mean and bitchy building manager and some hayseed scab. "I'm working as fast as I can-I'm not from here and golly-gee this equipment is real confuzin." Wrong answer jerk-***. There's going to be alot of wrong answers with Shindler and Otis (Kone doesn't even answer the phone) trying to come up with the right ones. How long do you think this can go on? Incompatance will be the company's downfall. So remember- when you see a scab in the street, he's the one being helped up by a cop bodyguard after being sideswiped by a crosstown M50, " Jesus, what happened? I feel like I got hit by a bus" You did you dip****!, have pity on him. He's just a stranger in a strange land and then piss on him. Have a nice and comforting lock-out
