Comments: Brothers & sisters, we will be picketing in front of Otis office at 34th & 10th Mon. morning.Lets get another huge turnout like we did Thurs. STAY STRONG!
Comments: An open letter to James Walker, I read the correspondence between you and Mr. Hernandez with great amusement. Do you actually believe that Local 1 is going to accept all of your proposals without any compromise? If you do Mr. Walker, then I must say that you are in desperate need of psychological help. In reading Mr. Hernandez’ replies to you, it is obvious that he is wanting to get back to the table and negotiate. Where are you Mr. Walker? Why are you hiding? And most importantly, why do you continue to lie to us and to the public? LIE NUMBER 1: You claim to be offering us a 22.5 percent wage increase over five years. We all know that is nothing but smoke and mirrors. What you are offering is a wage AND benefit increase. What portion of that 22.5 percent is actually going to wind up in our paychecks? Allow me to answer that question for you: ZERO!! With your ridiculous shift work proposal and what basically amounts to the elimination of 90 percent of EMANY’s overtime costs, we stand to gain nothing!! I personally would be giving back 15 percent of my salary the first year alone!! This is unacceptable Mr. Walker. LIE NUMBER 2: You claim the EMANY companies need to implement shift work in order to remain competitive. As Mr. Hernandez states, where is the competition? Except in a very limited number of situations, no other elevator shops in NYC use shift work in their service departments. And when shift work was used under the old contract, it paid a 20 percent premium. Why don’t you tell the truth about shift work? The only reason for this proposal is to feed the never ending appetite that is known as CORPORATE GREED!!!! Do you actually think that people are going to believe that the EMANY companies are going to pass any savings on to their customers? Of course not! The brothers of IUEC Local 1 all work very hard to support their families Mr. Walker. Stop insulting us with your insane proposals. Stop being delusional in believing that we are going to accept a contract from you without compromise. STOP HIDING AND BE A MAN! GET BACK TO THE TABLE!! WE WILL BE WAITING!!!

Comments: does any one remember the movie tin men starring danny devito and richard dreyfus? it was about aluminum siding salesmen in the sixties. at the end they were facing a congressional hearing for shady business dealings. the elevator companies better pray to god the building owners never snap to their shady practices and price gouging. i used to work for millar (a former division of swindler elevator co. for those of you reading that might not know) in the cleveland, oh area and they did a slick little move called “chance billing” they would bill the customer for something that was already covered under contract and if it was paid they took the money and ran. if the customer squawked they apologized for the “clerical mistake” and eliminated the charge. in akron, oh otis sold thousands of dollars in pre maintenance to gojo and just painted the machine room floor. another rotten thing these companies do is stealing the customer’s job specific wiring diagrams when they lose a contract. this practice should be illegal. i’ve never seen that get a contract back right away for a company. it only screws the building and the poor route mechanic that gets assigned the job, not to mention it puts the riding publics safety at risk. i thought safety was job 1 in the elevator industry? these companies better wake up fast. greed always kills the golden goose. this is a highly skilled, stressful and potentially dangerous occupation. they are not going to get quality people to do this for minimum wage.
Comments: To the EMANY group I am writing this letter in reference to the last newsletter you sent out on Thursday march 24 2005. I believe it is full of lies and deceptions. The letter expresses that we are causing mass vandalism. Also putting the public in grave danger. How could you say that? When our own family members ride these elevators and escalators on daily basics. At work or malls and airports. It is in my opinion that machinery breaks down in time and needs to be maintained. As someone that has been in the industry for more then 18yrs in all phases of the elevator business. I can assure you this ask any local one service mechanics, is his route to big, dose he have enough time to the preventive maintenance that is required to have a safe running elevator?. Also that the building is paying for. “ I BET NOT” You have said that the company’s of Otis, Kone and swindler have not gone outside there area for outside help. Well EMANY I beg to differ. Here is some name from different States. DAVE O’BRIAN, BRUCE WESSOLS, MARVIN TIGNER, RON WATERS, MARK . Do you care to explain where these scabs live then. Fight

Comments: Dear Brothers And Sisters,I know this weekend being easter people have plans to visit family ,but starting monday I feel we need to step it up notch out there especially at Starrett City in memory of John Meadus and his family. So all the membership that are working in the day need to contact the lockout captain(Tom Obrien). One more thing,I don't feel we the people who are locked out should have to wait 2 or more weeks to collect some relief.Thank You
Comments: It's ironic that we lost brother John Meadus in the middle of our fight. John fought the fight every day of his career. He will be missed. My deepest condolences to his family. We'll keep the fight going but John, THIS ONES FOR YOU!
Comments: Dear Brothers & Sisters,
We are presently in the jaws of a ferocious battle with a lying conspirator known as EMANY. In all of my 35 years in the elevator business, this contract that the association is trying to force down our throats is one of the worst I have ever seen.
EMANY wanted us on the street, and was fully prepared for a STRIKE. But our negotiating team wanted to keep at negotiating. We tried to go to work last Thursday March 17, 2005 but before we got to work we were text messaged saying that Otis Elevator had no work for us. So here we are LOCKED OUT by big business. Big business that has had record net profits, that never seem to be enough, and is always on the backs of the working men and women.
The trustees ( management side ) of our Health Care Plan Wanted to stop our benefits but thanks to LOCAL ONE it's still intact. Remember this all you company men when you go back to work and start running though your asses. Think about it!
Brothers and Sisters of the I.U.E.C. these three companies are trying to break us. But I must say while on picket lines this week my resolve is stronger than ever, I'm proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with my fellow Brothers and Sisters of LOCAL ONE.
This is only a prelude to regrettably what you all will be facing across to country when your contract expires.
To all my Brothers & Sisters: One contract issue I'd like to talk about is GPS. I had one 70 vans that Otis decided to put this tracking device in. It was like having a monkey on my back every minute I was in my van. Think about all the ramifications before you say it's no big deal. If and when we ever get a contract to vote on, think about all the issues not only the one's that apply to you.
I would like to say thanks to all the posts from around the country, your support goes along way.
Finally, I would I say thanks to the LOCAL ONE negotiating Team trying to bring us a contract we can ALL live with.

Comments: My fellow Brothers and Sisters, I'm a member of IBEW. We just came off a 98 day strike against First Energy. (a local utility co. in NJ) It appears to be an ongoing procedure for major corporate businesses to try and dismantle any organized labor movement. And the bottom line is more money for upper management and their stock holders. There is a bright side to all of this madness! The working person must make their voices heard! Write to your local ,state and Washington politicians! It's a must! You can't totally rely on you local or international union reps. to do it all! You ALL got to get involved! I've personally have had meetings with Senators and State Representatives. I've also had a close door meeting with the Governor. You also need to ask the appropriate questions of your local BA and regional union rep. Ask your international what they have done to expedite your contract negotiations. A Sister once said to me that she was afraid of retaliation from her fellow union members for asking , what she thought was an intelligent question. Only to find out that one of the members she feared the most ask the question. We had a group in our local that participated in all strike sites across the state. It didn't matter that we had to get up at 0400 hrs to stop the scabs.........WE HAD TO STOP THE SCABS! We decided to call ourselves the "TEN PER-CENTERS". Ten percent of the people doing 100% of the work. But it didn't matter...We were protecting all our members, and that was all that mattered. What we really needed to impress upon our Union leaders was that there were plenty of competent people willing to assist in any way, The system council just needed to learn how to delegate responsibility. Once that was accomplished, members started realizing that they could make a difference. In closing, I hope this works out in your favor. And if you need strike bodies, please feel free to contact your local IBEW hall or the teamsters. Also I would recommend the IUC.
Comments: As stated in my last post violence is not the answer and to date I am proud to say that our union is standing tall and proud without it. We are putting our best foot forward and showing the public and EMANY that we mean buisness on the facts alone.
I read in the letters availabe for download a statement that proves we are doing the right thing:

Comments: After reading James Walker of EMANY's letters to Ray Hernandez,it is obvious that he and his associates think of our union members as mindless barbarians. But I ask, could a mindless barbarian build such a complex & sophisticated piece of equipment such as our modern day elevator? I think not.Remember, we can do thier jobs, but I doubt they can do ours. STAY STRONG !!!

Comments: I'm not an elevator man, but I am the father of a Local 1 member.Good Friday morning I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge with a large group of people to commemorate the Way of the Cross. Couldn't help reflecting that the Local 1 guys are undergoing a crucifixion. And Otis is Pontius Pilate, Schindler is Caiaphas and Kone is the Bad Thief. Hang in there. Your families are behind you 100% and are very proud of you.
Comments: Look at what this S.O.B. made last year. I guess the Elevator business can make a profit after all! It would seem that the hard work and dedication of the field employees pays off very nicely! I'm UNION and Dam Proud! 7 7 7 NO GIVEBACKS!!! http://businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_43/b3905001_mz001.htm

Comments: Dear IUEC members , can you imagine they are comparing us to asphalt workers, drywall&taper's ,and excavation workers??????? what the hell are they thinking??I mean I am not knocking any of those trades ,but it is night and day !! we are skilled mechanicaly and electricly...Maybe before we negotiate a contract with them we should make them aware of what we do!!! Apparently they don't know!! I mean give us the contract we as elevator journeymen&apprentices deserve .......We are not drywall & tapers or asphalt workers!! |
