We would like to thank the brothers and sisters that came out to Queens Community Board 7 on Monday(3/22) evening/Tuesday(3/23) morning.  We were there to help get some work through a project called Flushing Commons.  We expected to be there for 2 hours and our members held strong until they were able to testify, which happened after the 5 hour mark and well after 12:00 am Tuesday morning.  We hope that your sacrifice will result in some jobs in the not too distant future.

Thanks.

The public process for this zoning should last about 5 more months.  We will be reaching out to more members living in Queens Community District 7 (Whitestone, Flushing, College Point) as the process unfolds.  Please respond to the call; with the employment picture the way that it is, the job that you save or create may be your own.

Thanks also go out to the brothers that attended the public meeting in Mount Vernon on the same night.  Your efforts are appreciated.

It amazes me how things go's on in this local. How mechanics and helpers get layoff. When we have nonunion workers running around doing our work. Then we have brothers that are late in their dues and then on top of that we have brothers that don't even want to take out their union cards when they get challenge. We have brothers out there running throw their ASS.It's a shame what go on.We have brothers out their afraid to be good union men because their going to lose their jobs.Because if your a good union men and you do whats right down the road you go.And that's the TRUTH.And remember 1 thing if we don't stick together we got nothing.Because all the guys came before us don't let all their hard work die in VAIN. And all i can say is GOD help us all.

I'm looking for a few good Elevator Constructors @ "The Villages", Florida. After seeing Eddie Brock & Tom Warning in the "Elevator Constructor", I contacted Ed and found out there are quite a few Local #1 Guys who, at least, winter in "The Villages" and some stay year round. I'm forming an Elevator Constructor Retirees Club here and so far I have seven Local #1 Brothers who are interested. No business, just BS and lunch. So, if you know of any Brothers or Sisters who would be interested, please email me and let me know. Stay out of mischief

Great turnout at the World Trade Center site on Tuesday. About 5000 construction workers showed up along with many politicians demanding that the site be REBUILT NOW!! Not only for jobs but because of the national DISGRACE that these buildings are still down after almost NINE YEARS!! SHAME on our government.

Thanks to all of the Local One Brothers who showed up to support this great rally. Great day to be a UNION MAN!!!  Now we will see if the Port and Silverstein can stop their silly non sense and get this project going. Say a prayer, it can't hurt.

Semper Fi,
Freddie

Dear Brothers:

Here's Wishing you a Happy St. Patrick Day. As luck would have it, the day of wearing green falls on our next meeting date March 17th, so come on down to the Yacht Club for our annual St. Patrick's Day Luncheon. Corned Beef, Cabbage and all the trimmings

At our February meeting, attendance was rather light. We had a great luncheon from Canlon's Restaurant.  With so Few in attendance this proved to be very expensive. To eliminate the problem of over ordering on our luncheons if you plan on attending the St. Patrick Day Luncheon, you must call me by March 15th to Reserve your place at the Table RSVP to my home phone at (718-816-9358 by 3/15/2010. Please feel free to leave a message. Hope to see you all there.  Meeting Notice:

Great Kills Yacht Club, Wednesday, March 17, 2010
Fraternally,
Hugh F. Canlon

This is a bunch of great retired Brothers out in Staten Island.
If you are around give ACE Canlon a call and attend the meeting.

Safety First:
Elevator Union Trains To a High Level

By: Bendix Anderson

Constructing elevators is a dangerous job — workers need a lot of training to do the work safely.  “You have electrical hazards, you have mechanical hazards, height, chemicals, confined spaces… the list goes on and on,” says Dennis O’Niel, who runs the apprenticeship programs for Local One of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC).  At Local One, workers undergo a four-year apprenticeship program. The classes meet once a week for four hours, about 40 weeks out of the year. That’s 144 hours of required class time a year.  The first seven weeks of class all put safety first, with class titles like “Introduction to Safety,” “Safety During Construction,” and “Safety during Maintenance.”  The instructors are veteran workers with years of experience constructing and maintaining elevators, says O’Niel.
There are a lot of local laws and regulations on the training of elevator workers — but the union’s training course far surpasses all of them.  For example, New York City requires all elevator workers to be certified by the federal Occupations Safety Health Administration (OSHA). The city demands an OSHA 10 certification on most construction sites. But it only takes 10 hours of coursework to get an OSHA 10 certification. The city also requires anyone who works on a scaffold to hold a license earned from a four-hour training course. These requirements, and others like them, are light compared to the hundreds of hours of class time required by the union.

The union’s focus of safety has become one of the main ways that Local One differentiates itself — safety is one of the strongest selling points for the union as it works to expand, according to union officials. When the union campaigns to bring a non-union shop into the union, the first concession the shop will make to its workers will be to improve its safety training and procedures.

Great turnout last night, Great meeting finally, and obviously great decision. The best thing about last night was "US" the members of local#1 was able too see through all the "personal vandettas" that were going on.......and VOTE what was gonna be best for "US NOW" as local#1 members and families. Obviously we are the best union brothers anywhere around. We continue to shine when most needed. Great job to all of us. WORK SAFE AS USUAL.

Hi all,
First, my card number was 973 when I was in Local 1. It was my father's and the hall gave it to me when he retired. Now I'm in Local 51, Richmond, VA.
Steve Dziuma made very valid and relevant comments about dues. That's how it was way back, and I remember all those names he mentioned. My father and Tom Connelly grew up together. The old guard enforced the dues payment rule.
Nice to see familiar names in the guest book. Hi Moe, how ya doin' cupcake?
I, too, am unemployed in Virginia. I did work for Otis about six weeks, then was laid off. Three weeks later they picked me up again to run the car I installed. That was a nice gravy job. Kind of a comeuppance, but in a good way. Made lots of overtime for those six weeks. Then laid off again.
Thankfully I have the army reserve to fall back on, and they deployed me to Kuwait a second time. I'm employed for a year, at least, and I'm thankful for that. Hopefully work in Virginia picks up by the time I get home in September.
Let's hang in there and weather this storm,  because if we lose this union, you'll see work place changes you ain't gonna like. Our benefits will go first. Next will be pay cuts. Then trimming the workforce. Some of you will keep your jobs as non-union workers. I don't know what the companies will give you as a compensation package, but I bet it won't be what you have now.
We had a bricklayers union in Virginia years ago. The workers let it die. They felt they didn't need a union. A few years later they were bitching about work, pay, benefits, and conditions. They let the union go but over the long haul paid a bitter price.
Don't lose the Union, Brothers and Sisters.
