CRUISES!!

Did you know Norwegian Cruise Lines offers a union discount on almost all of their cruises? Union discounts range from 5% - 15%, and, on occasion, 30%! Discounts apply to 1st and 2nd passenger, and are applicable to active and retired members. Cruising from a home port is easy and affordable - without the hassle and expense of flying. Norwegian Cruise Lines sails out of New York, Boston, Miami, Port Canaveral, New Orleans, Los Angelos, and Seattle. There are many short 3-4 day cruises that go out of Miami - perfect for retired members who want a quick, inexpensive getaway!

I come from a long line of hard-working Local 1 union members - my grandfather, my dad, uncles, and cousins are all proud members.  Let me help you plan a memorable vacation at the right price.  I work with Cruise Brothers, a well-known and highly respected family travel agency who specialize in cruising.  Taking a cruise is one of the least expensive - and most fun -ways to travel, and is perfect for multi-generations.  Cruises can accommodate those who may require wheelchairs, special diets, and other medical concerns.  Call, e-mail, or visit my website at:

Times have changed.  When I first started in Local 1, the foreman used to check for paid up cards and if you weren't paid up to date, he sent you to the hall.  You went and pleaded your case to Karl Stork, John Green, Tom Connelly or Jim Kennedy.  After a brief put down and a promise to pay within an agreed to time, usually a week, two at most., you went back to the job site.  The foreman would then call the hall to confirm the arrangement, then and only then, you went back to work.  You were docked for the hours you didn't work.  It worked then, could it work now?

what about the brothers that pay there dues and there still out of work. And on top of that theres non-union doing our work. What do you think of that brother. If a brother doesnt pay there dues they don't dissrve to work.
Its not that hard to pay your dues when you have a job.

Thank you Brother Wody. We could use more members like yourself. The real "scumbags" are the ones that don't pay their dues and look the other way when the Union's best interest is at stake. Keep up the good work.

I apologize to any brothers and sisters who have been laid off and reading this post.I was sent away two weeks ago by some coward in a westchester region only to find out two days ago when I contacted him that I was actually laid off. This certain company has been plucking mechanics and helpers from various locations for employment while the rest of us got the axe.I did not realize we have lost this much. For the card holding brothers who are somewhat in charge I hope to see your name on the bench soon. I am glad this cherade is finally over.

Man falls to death in elevator shaft in Upper West Side building

Thursday, January 14th 2010, 4:00 AM

A young worker plummeted down an elevator shaft to his death on the upper West Side on Wednesday, police said.

The unidentified 24-year-old landed on top of the elevator, which was at or near the first floor of the six-story building on W.104th St., police and residents said.

Resident Ary Weisman, 42, said cops told him the worker was on the sixth floor when he fell, shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Cops ruled the man's death an accident and were investigating the possibility he may have been electrocuted before he fell.

The dead man's co-worker, a 37-year-old elevator mechanic, was checking on the lift's power source, police said.

Weisman said he was walking down the stairwell when he heard sickening banging sounds as the man tumbled down the shaft.

"It was like nothing I had heard before," he said.

Watching out for each other out there !!!
Work Safe.

Dear Brothers & sisters,
Brother Colons message couldn't of been said better. Why should someones cup of bounty be full or overflowing when another is empty?? We all need to reach out to others less fortunate then ourselves ALL YEAR LONG! It was nice to read the appreciation of a fellow brother who was so grateful for the generous Toy Drive . We should never do anything for the thank you or the recognition, but because it's the right thing to do. I spoke to Billy Porter last week ( Billy was seriously injured and is in St. Charles hospital) When I got off the phone I WAS UPLIFTED by his spirit, although I never met Billy he is a glass half full man. We spoke about his son coming home from his first year @ Delaware University & all his kids. We spoke about how blessed he is to have a wonderful wife Paula. But the best part was how  he was AMAZED at how many  people have come to his aid ( not only Local 1 members but neighbors and friends and family), when things are good everyone is your friend . But through tragedy you really find out who cares about you. I would like to take a moment and ask everyone to pray for Billy  & also remember what brother Colon said sometimes support is just a phone call away.
I hope this message finds everyone doing well and in good spirits. Please take the time over the Holiday Season to be grateful , to be appreciative . Life is full of challenges (referring to brothers Colons post with the Companies stand on how to run their business) sometimes  we feel they are not justified. But we need to respond to all of life challenges which is positive and not react which is negative.
Continue to work safe and look after one another. If a brother comes to you for assistance or help reach out to him, don't look away , don't be part of the problem , be part of the solution.
Merry Christmas , Happy Hanukkah and a Happy & Healthy New Year to all Local One members & your family & friends!!! God Bless!
 Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link
