Greetings brothers..I just want to wish you all a happy holidays..For those of us that are still working, each day brings a mixed feeling of appreciation and apprehension at the same time, for day to day we have no idea what these companies are plotting to do. Gone are the days when merit decided who got promoted and who got a plus rate and who got to keep his job. These companies have dug themselves into a hole with unreasonable profit margins. This has perpetuated to such an extent that even when they possess a great product, it makes no difference whatsoever because of several key reasons.1. they don’t know how to sell it. 2. Most of their bosses or supervisors were not field people and therefore have no clue as to how an elevator works, the intricacies of fixing them and the capabilities of the equipment; other than what they read about it.3. They don’t appreciate the skilled men they have, specially troubleshooters, adjusters and good all around mechanics. Nowadays they’ve come up with an outstanding idea, take away the plus rate that they pay their top people as a mean of compensating for loss of profits. Brilliant!! This is insidious because in essence this practice opens up a door for other companies who may value these skilled men  to entice them to switch companies, keeping or perhaps increasing their rates. It makes no sense to spent countless millions in training a man only to make his life so miserable that he has ultimately to move on somewhere else, taking with him the sum total of the knowledge he has learned in the years he spent with that company. How utterly Ironic that these companies are providing competitors the men with which they can take away their equipment. And to top it all they act apathetic as if to say .” we don’t need you, don’t let the door hit you on the way out”. With each man that leaves a valuable piece of that company walks away. If before a man was fired or allowed to walk away a lobotomy was performed then perhaps the separation wouldn’t be so costly. It’s difficult to predict where the big companies are heading, but if they don’t  wake up soon. It is the little companies that will reap the benefits of their advanced technology… Of What benefit is to discover the cure for cancer if the treatment cost 5 million dollars.. To those brothers sitting in the bench with no work I will extol to stay steadfast with hope for a better year to come… make use of the union’s resources, drive for toys this Christmas etc. And should your needs rise beyond your capability to provide for your family, THEN REACH OUT TO YOUR BROTHERS. As WE do for those that are hurt, while at work WE will do for those that are out of work. It all start with a phone call. You’re not alone. Call the hall, call a BROTHER. You’ll be surprised how most of us respond to another brother’s need , Most of us understand that anyone of us at any time can find ourselves in need of a helping hand..I know I’ve been there, when tragedy struck my family the response from my brothers was tremendous and awe inspiring.  I don’t know of any brother out here that won’t reach in his pocket;generously, when the call comes for a brother in need. Pride has to be put aside brothers, pride self perpetuates into self pity, anger and depression. And that’s not the way to go. All of us out here CARE.

Once again we wish you all a peaceful Christmas and renewed hope for next year..

The Colon family

Dear Brothers & Sisters,
I hope everyone is doing well. Please consider donating to the Local One Toy Drive for all the families of presently unemployed members of Local One. We all need to take care of one another ( I cant imagine how difficult It must be for these families). Its very easy to do with all the different gift cards available! Some stores are even offering bonus money if you purchase gift cards .Regardless its the least we can do for these families. These brothers and sisters ARE OUR FAMILIES
You will get everything in life If you just reach out and help others less fortunate then yourself!
Please keep your minds @ work during the holiday season. When at work concentrate on your work! Continue to work safe so we can go home to our families at the end of the day.
Please continue to look after one another and protect our work.
Enjoy the holiday and may 2010 be a good year for everyone
          Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link

Mayor Signs $5.3B PLA's PDF Print E-mail
PLA agreement

Mayor Announces PLA with the Building Trades

NOVEMBER 24th -- Mayor Mike Bloomberg today announced the signing of long-awaited Project Labor Agreements (PLA's) worth $5.3 Billion in public projects over the next four years. The signing of the PLA's caps an eight-month negotiation process between the Trades and the City administration. These are the first-ever PLA's for City agencies. The PLA for the School Construction Authority builds on a previous PLA agreement. The announcement was made at the Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School at Spring and Broome Streets in Soho.

Calling the PLA deals "the economic downturn's silver lining," the Mayor said hard economic times have allowed the City to win $300 million in savings from labor unions by exacting concessions in work rules and overtime, including a waiver of Wicks Law provisions. (Hear audio of the Mayor here.) Building and Construction Trades Council President Gary LaBarbera, in response to a question, countered by noting that the PLA's put savings dollars back into the City's capital budget, where they will be used to fund an additional 1,800 unionized construction jobs. (Hear audio of Mr. LaBarbera here.)

The solid turnout of labor leaders at the event -- including top officials of the Mason Tenders, Ironworkers, Painters, Elevator Constructors, and others -- was a clear indication that they support the PLA's and believe their funding guarantees will be instrumental in helping many union members ride out the recession. The PLA's mean different things to different unions, with some -- like Mason Tenders Local 79 -- looking to see significant hiring. Others, like the Elevator Constructors, are expecting just a small boost.

Local 79 Rank and File carried their banner at the press event

Building Trades Employers' Association President Lou Coletti thanked the Mayor for stimulating jobs and said that his contractors would "compete very heavily" for the work, thus insuring greater savings for the City. (Hear audio of Mr. Coletti here.)

Overtime is capped at time-and-a-half for work performed from Monday through Saturday with no restriction on the ability of contractors to schedule overtime to meet deadlines. All trades have agreed to standardization of terms and flexibility of scheduling at job sites, including eight standard holidays, 8-hour day, 40-hour weeks, flexible start times, and coordinated lunch periods. Strikes are prohibited even if broader work stoppages exist outside the work sites.

The Mayor's office said the PLA's will fund 32,000 construction jobs over the four year life of the agreements. He was joined by Reverend Jacques A. DeGraff of the Minority Business Leadership Council, who noted that the PLA's have specific provisions to increase the numbers of minorities and women who can be placed on construction jobs. For contracts and subcontracts of less than $1 million, managed by non-union Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises, the contractor will be allowed to fill as many as half of the first eight jobs on a project with their own workforce. The PLA's commit unions to the goal of hiring 45% of apprentices from the ranks of minorities, women, returning veterans, and new high school graduates of theCity's public schools.

Here is a breakdown of the four Project Labor Agreements which were finalized today:

The first covers $942 million in projects for the general renovation and rehabilitation of existing City-owned buildings and structures.

Delgado and the Mayor

Local 79 Business Manager John Delgado speaks to the Mayor after the press event, as his members stand in the background.

The second and third, worth $1.9 billion, covers eleven large-scale, new construction projects, including a new Police Academy, a new branch library in Far Rockaway, and the City's new 911 dispatching center.

The fourth PLA, between the School Construction Authority (SCA) and the Building and Trades Construction Council, funds $2.5 billion or renovation and rehabilitation of schools.

The Mayor made it clear that other PLA's are in the works. including one which would cover an additional $509 million of work at wastewater treatment plants, housing properties owned by the City and at other sites.

Unselfishly, you left your fathers and your mothers, you left behind your sisters and your brothers. Leaving your beloved children and wives, you put on hold, your dreams and your lives. FREEDOM was the gift that you unselfishly gave pain and DEATH was the price that you ultimately PAID!!!! Everyday, give the utmost admiration to those who had fought to defend our nation.
