Greetings to everyone.   As always we hope this posting finds everyone in good health and spirits.  As we all know the holidays are fast approaching.  I was just inquiring if Local 1 will be holding the gift card drive for the children of the brothers and sisters that have been sadly laid off.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Paul & Lori Agnello

I would like to thank Freddie McCourt for a great retirement party thrown for me on Oct. 29 at Costa Verdes.  I saw a lot of friends that I have not seen in a long while. I would also like to thank Freddie for the Depends underwear so I don't have to get up when I am watching T.V. I know Freddie had to pay most of those guys to show up. All kidding aside it was greatly appreciated.  Good Luck and WORK SAFE

Dear Brothers & Sisters,
I was wondering how everyone feels about the union meetings being at OUR OWN union hall? I feel the meetings give our members more of a sense of " belonging". I know the meetings have been much better attended and overall I think they have been good informative meetings with the truly concerned members bringing some good questions and concerns to the mike (which I have felt have been answered).
I know its better or worse for some members  but If It's important to you you should make the effort (No matter where you work or live).
SAFETY must be observed! I presently work for Schindler & we are supplied with I feel all we need to work safe. We need to utilize the equipment and work safe. If you don't agree with a so called work procedure then QUESTION IT! Talk to your shop steward or BA, If you are not being supplied with the proper equipment do the same. Regarding using rigging , hoisting or straps YOU MUST visually inspect always and NEVER USE any tug its , chainfalls or coffin hoists that ARE NOT TESTED AND TAGGED ANNUALLY (minimum). The idea for working safe is to protect one another and other trades and go HOME in one piece safe and sound to our families.
Please continue to challenge & check one another for your paid union card and call in ALL jobs to the hall including Modernization WORK. Their has been some issues regarding who's work is who's?? READ THE CONTRACT. If you have any ??? talk to one another never work unsafe and look after one another, we all need to get along.
I would love to hear back from members including our elected officials regarding continuing to keep the union meetings @ Our Union Hall. All for one....One for all.
I remain as always a proud , concerned and educated member of Local One. We need to stick together .
               Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link

We would like to thank the Brothers and their wives for coming out on Saturday October 17 th to support their Local Union and Elizabeth Crowley, a Union Painter running for re-election to the City Council.

It was a fun day as we knocked on the doors of Union Households in Middle Village , Glendale and Ridgewood .  The Queens residents opened their doors wide when we announced that we were union members and families, just like them, supporting another union member.

The day began with us assembling at Local 30's hall in Richmond Hill where we met the Brothers and Sisters that we would be working along side of.  Brothers and Sisters from IUPAT DC 9 (Painters and Allied Trades), LIUNA Local 79, IUOE Local 30, IBEW Local 3 and Heat and Frost Insulators Local 12 realized how important it is that we keep one of our own in the seat at the City Council and that 3 hours on a Saturday morning was very little to give toward achieving this end.  Liz's presence assures us that the voice of union construction workers will be at the table whenever the council meets.

For the next two Saturdays (October 24th and October 31st ) we will be again devoting three hours to help one of our own, Building Trades Union Member Elizabeth Crowley, get re-elected to City Council.  It is a hotly contested race and we need your help in Central Queens .  We are working from 9:30 am until approximately 1:00 pm.  We are assembling at Local 30's Headquarters at 115-06 Myrtle Avenue, Richmond Hill .  If anyone needs public transportation to get there please check http://www.hopstop.com/

If you would like to participate in helping to support our future please call

Lee Pirone: (917)-494-5910 or Mike Halpin: (917)-335-1516

You can also just show up at Local 30's hall between 9:30 and 9:45 am on Saturday Oct. 24th and/or Saturday Oct 31st, but an advanced head count would help us in getting set-up.

Thank you again to those that participated Saturday 10/17.  We hope to see many members in the coming weeks.

The meeting for the Thyssen Brothers and Sisters after the union meeting (9-15-09) is for the outlying area construction departments. New Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island.

Thyssen has new management running these offices and we want all of our people to be on the same page. All Thyssen employees are welcome but the meeting is "ONLY" going to be about the construction departments in these areas.

Dear Brothers & Sisters,
I would like to offer Local Ones Own Treasurers Mike Rieggers Dad George Riegger a speedy recovery. Mikes Dad just had triple bypass heart surgery and is at home recovering. My thoughts and prayers are with brother Riegger and his entire family for a speedy recovery for his Dad. Mikes Dad is a retired Science teacher from Bayport Bluepoint School District.
Everyone should have their 4th quarter paid union card. Please call in all jobs. Hopefully everyone is doing well, KNOW YOUR CONTRACT! Don't take shortcuts, I read in the elevator constructor many Locals feel we are losing a lot of work because a lot of our membership are not familiar with OUR work agreement?
Please work under our agreement and continue carding other members for their paid union cards. If we work safely , If we get help when we need it?, If we Know our contract? We would definitely get some of our members who are on the bench back to work. If your not sure about a specific pre-fab or work assignment call your BA or call the hall. Don't sit idly by and do nothing.
I remain as always a proud, educated and well informed member of Local One . We as members need to get more involved in our local at work and in our communities at home. Work safe and look after those who not only could use your help but might just need some encouragement as well
 Respectfully submitted Brother Brian Link

Is it any wonder that we are lucky to barely get a quorum at Union meetings when our Business Manager/President and a VP/Business Agent feel it is more important to fly to Vancouver early on the memberships dime than to attend one themselves.I'll bet they didn't miss the Executive Board meeting the previous Tuesday.God forbid they should give up their "O.T.".Several hundred members are unemployed, and they take a little vacation.Shameful!

THOMPSON COLLECTED MORE THAN $3.8 MILLION IN UNPAID WAGES FOR WORKERS ON CITY PROJECTS

— Record year under Thompson for worker wage collections —

The Office of New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. over the past fiscal year collected more than $3.8 million from contractors in wages and benefits due to workers who had been cheated out of prevailing wages for work on City projects.

“Prevailing wage laws exist to ensure that workers are paid their legal wages,” Thompson said. “While law-breaking contractors are not the norm, too many companies still attempt to cheat employees out of their lawful wages. When they do this on City projects, my office pursues restitution for the workers, and debars contractors that egregiously disregard the labor law.”

In Fiscal Year 2009, the Comptroller’s Bureau of Labor Law collected $3,892,148 —a record high under the Thompson administration —in back wages and interest owed to workers by contractors who failed to pay prevailing wages and benefits. Thompson’s office also collected $266,090 in penalties from law-breaking contractors, which constitutes revenue for the City of New York. In the previous fiscal year, Thompson collected $1,930,282 in wages and benefits for workers.

The largest financial settlement in FY 2009 and largest settlement during Comptroller Thompson’s tenure was a $1.5 million settlement for 32 school construction workers.  In August 2008, Thompson’s office reached settlements with Admiral Construction Services Corporation and Admiral Environmental LLC, which had contracts for the installation of new windows in City public schools throughout the five boroughs. As part of the settlement, the two Admiral companies agreed not to bid on, or accept, any public work contracts or subcontracts within the City or State.

Most of the Admiral workers who removed and installed the windows were paid the Asbestos Handlers wage rate under the prevailing wage law. However, videotapes of the removal and installation process showed that much of the work performed should have been paid at the higher Ornamental Ironworker and Mason Tender rates.

Working with Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, Thompson’s office also obtained more than $1 million in restitution for ten former employees of AAR/Co Electric for work at the Queens Botanical Garden and other City projects. Arie Bar, the owner of AAR/Co, and the corporation, are also now debarred from working under contracts or subcontracts with the City or State governments for five years.

This May, Thompson’s office collected nearly $750,000 in back wages and interest for 12 workers, as well as a $37,000 civil penalty, from Verizon Select Services Inc. (VSSI). The company had contracts with the City’s Department of Information & Telecommunications to maintain, repair and upgrade Nortel Meridian and Norstar phone, fax and computer systems to government offices in the Municipal Building and other City-owned facilities. VSSI was obliged to pay its employees the Telecommunication Worker rate or the Electrician rate when performing public work such as installing and pulling cables for data, voice and video applications.

The office also succeeded in gaining nearly $100,000 in back wages and interest in June for 21 employees of Servi-Tek Elevator Corporation who were underpaid for their work rehabilitating elevators at a public office building in the Bronx. Servi-Tek also was debarred from public work in the City and State for five years.

Over the past seven fiscal years, Thompson has collected wages, benefits and interest on underpayments due to workers totaling $14,973,503 and collected an additional $1,207,713 in penalties paid to the City.

The City Comptroller enforces State laws that require private sector companies to pay employees prevailing wages and benefits when they work on public works contracts with the City for construction or building services. The Comptroller also enforces the City’s living wage law that sets minimum wage rates for security guards employed by City contractors, cleaners, day care workers and several other job titles when they are employed by City contractors.
