I also want to take this moment to let my Dad know "77 years young" that I am so grateful for everything he has done for me and how he has always lead by example . We sometimes take alot we have for granted and being able to BE a father might be one of them . Until I was blessed with having my own children I never realized the unconditional LOVE and all the worrying we do as parents . We all just want what is best for our children, but please never take anything for granted that God has afforded us. We are only on this Earth for a very short time so make the best of it! Dad thanks for everything ! Even though you don't hear so well sometimes I will never tire of saying I love you. On another note I want to take a moment and wish brother Jim Reardon a speedy recovery (Jim was injured on the job on Memorial Day) Jim was one of the first mechanics I worked alongside back at Armor Elevator in the early eighties. One thing and can tell you is when I saw brother Jim at union meetings we always talked about our children as proud parents should . My thoughts and prayers go out to brother Jim and may God Bless him with the strength and the support for a full recovery. You guy's did a hell of a job getting the surveys out and making sure the city got them back before the deadline because without your efforts we would have not been successful and had the door closed on us for another year with the city With Elevator Journeyman rates not being that of Local #1 would have continued to be a clear disadvantage for the employers bidding on New York City elevator work but most of all our members Hopefully with the new Prevailing Wage Rate being that of IUEC Local #1 contract rates The membership will afforded more job opportunities to do elevator work in the City of New York in the coming year Again Congratulations on your efforts. card number 115143 Comments: Many have heard about the unfortunate fatal accident in Palm Beach which old shut-off valves are involved. These valves were inherently dangerous from the beginning. Unfortunately instead of replacement, remedial "repair" included a u-bolt to discourage the use and give additional support to keep the bottom of the valve from falling out. Over the years elevator personnel are not even aware of the original problems of the valves or significant risk of the valve falling apart during use. Additionally some of the u-bolts could be rusted off or removed. I have waited beyond what should be a reasonable time for the Bureau of Elevator Fees and Permits to notice the industry of the problems found and to warn the industry. Unfortunately they have not and probably will not. Many have called me concerning what valve could have been involved and what are the problems. I have heard from multiple inspectors finding these valves all over the State of Florida.
The information below may be helpful to even one person out there. This is a photo of one of the valve installations. These valves need to be removed completely as they are (1) Not functionally safe for the installation and (2) pose an inherent danger to the safe operation of the elevator. Prior to tampering with the valve in ANY way the car must be properly secured as immediate and full loss of hydraulic pressure can happen with the bottom falling out of the valve. DO NOT REMOVE THE U-BOLTS, SECURE THE CAR AND REMOVE THE ENTIRE VALVE! I would encourage ALL inspectors, contractors and mechanics to use any means to have the building owner remove the valves at once safely. Please be safe!
