Any good news out there?

Did we just get 300 or so new members?

Did we just win an arbitration that will effect the rest of the country?

Did we just win  the prevailing wage rate for the city of NY?

Did we get rid of the federal monitor in the required time?

How many non-union shops has Halpin organized?

Do we have the ear of the owners on getting the operators back on the cars?

I hope our pocket-sized contracts will be in the mail by St. Patrick's Day, as it's been almost three months since the vote.

Also, where is our annuity return for 2008?  Whether it's good or bad news, why does it take so long to find out the numbers -- are they still using an abacus rather than a computer??

Brothers and Sisters,

I spoke to Shane today and he said Travis is still putting up a good fight. He is now breathing on his own but he is not out of danger as of yet.

Please keep the prayers coming. It seems to be working.

A Local 51 guy here. Started in Local 1 in 1970. Some of you know me. Formerly Card #973.
Good guest book. Bill Madden; nice to see you online. The bagpiper for my Fathers funeral was great. Thanks. And Kevin Fitzgerald, I like your comments on the contract. I love my time off, but comp time doesn't pay bills. Money does.
Our work situation in VA is slow. We have guys working out of state. I may be doing the same, soon. Unless the Army sends me back overseas. I've been mobilized the past four years, and I'm starting to miss elevators. Am I nuts?

For thoses of you who work with small companies who still use CLEANING FLUID, there is a good article in Sundays New York Times on page 16 in the National section, about workers who have used different types of cleaning fluid over the years and have developed an assortment of ailments. The sad part is that they are being denied Workers Comp. for their illnesses. The one we used to use, all the label said was CLEANING FLUID, no other info given, so you know that stuff was no good for you.

As many of you are aware we have been working with a group called Coney Island CLEAR.  One of CLEAR’s primary goals is to push all of the upcoming redevelopment work on Coney Island Union.  We are very involved in the public process and will be attending the next meeting of Community Board 13 in Brooklyn.  Our voice will be substantially stronger if we have our members that live within the Community District attend the meeting with us.  The community District includes all of the 11224 zip code and parts of the 11235, 11223 and 11214 zip codes.  We would ask all of our members who live in that area to attend the community board meeting with us.  The meeting is on Wednesday January 28th at 7:00 pm.  The meeting will be held in the 2nd floor auditorium at Coney Island Hospital, 2601 Ocean Parkway.  We would ask that you show up at approximately 6:30 so that we may prepare for the meeting.

The boundaries of Brooklyn Community District 13 are:

DISTRICT 13

North Gravesend Bay, Prolongation of 26th Ave, Stillwell

Ave, Ave U, 86th St, Shell Road, Ave Y

East Coney Island Ave, Guilder Ave, Cass Place, Corbin

Place, Brightwater Ave, Eastern boundary of Park

South Atlantic Ocean

West Lower New York Bay, Gravesend Bay

Fraternally,

Michael Halpin
