Just read an article about federal agents raiding a transformer plant in Mississippi, they were tipped of by a UNION MEMBER that there were illegal  workers working in the plant. 600 workers were detained by the officers, women were given electronic braclets so they could be monitored. Fellow workers applauded as the illegal immigrants were taken into custody. Maybe we should all keep an eye out at some of the jobs that we maintain.  Sounds like a good start, 600 new job openings in Miss. in one day.

Dear Brothers & Sisters,
First and foremost I hope this post finds everyone doing well.
I have been hearing reading quite a bit regarding the apprentices marching in the Labor Day Parade. I would just like to see more involvement by ALL members. I have taken some criticism on my stance but I actually appreciate any ones opinion. I am extremely frustrated that we don't have more members at the union meetings, but I still go . I chose to be part of the solution not the problem. I want to echo the words written about brother Ed Halpin, I helped Ed at Columbia University in the early eighties he was extremely well educated as well as a great union brother.
I would actually like to see ALL the members at the labor day parade. We have less then 7 months until our present contract expires, what a great place to start! We also have an extremely important presidential election coming up, know the facts and make an educated decision but VOTE!
We can continue to point fingers & blame others for some members lack of UNIONISM, or we can do something about it. We are all responsible for what we do in our own shoes everyday. We as union members have a responsibility to lead by example.
On another subject, Schindler Elevator has stepped up their safety program ( We have had some fatalities) . We should be glad they want us to work safe, we should be thankful they supply us with the equipment to WORK SAFE. We must as Union members make sure we all work safe and challenge and assist others who need help.
A good UNION MEMBER...works safe always, works 8 for 8, pays his quarterly union card and challenges others for same.
A good union member always is improving himself at work and at home .
A good union member is thankful for what our brothers before us fought for but we also must understand without true involvement we will lose it.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH brothers and sisters, we need to get involved not only at Local 1 but also in our communities and in our families. I will as always remain a truly proud, concerned &educated member of Local One IUEC .
Please feel free to email me , call me with ANY positive suggestions to make us stronger ( do me a favor and please sign your name )
My thoughts and prayers are with brother John Brady Jr. for a full recovery.
Thanks again for letting me vent
       Respectfully submitted brother Brian Link

With all due respect to the brother's that I'm responding to I would like to address some of their postings.
With regard to brother Mike Halpin's 8/14/08 posting in which he states that it will be mandatory for all apprentices to attend the Labor Day Parade I know his father would have set him straight on this erroneous statement.
Ed, his father, attended Cornell University for Labor Studies and was knowledgeable of the Taft-Hartley law which in part states that, and I quote, "The only obligation of membership under the Taft-Hartley Law is payment of union dues and initiation fees." Unquote.  Simply put Mike, no member can be forced, or mandated to participate in any union activities against his or her will.
If you would have checked the postings you would have read that in my 6/04/08 posting, in which I responded to brother Brian Link's 5/18/08 posting, I stated the provision in the Taft-Hartley Law that I have just explained to you and you wouldn't have made the false statement that you did, not intentionaly I'm sure.  In any event Mike, I consider your dad one of the more dedicated and knowledgeable members that I had the privelege to know.
To brother Kenneth Kuhn's 8/19/08 posting, in which he ask's, "Since when does Local One have the authority to mandate what members do with their off time?"  Good question Ken, but I have yet to see a response from the Local.  They can, however, "mandate" that no member participate in doing any kind of elevator work on the side, esspecially with a non-signatory scab outfit.  That is a big NO-NO that can get you expelled.
To brother Louie Pilonero's 8/17/08 posting, you're absolutly 100% correct brother.  Although Labor Day is an important event for all union members, there are, with the exception of July and August, ten other day's that are equally important, at least in my own opinion.
Of course I am talking about the ten union meeting's that the majority of members fail to attend.  They perfer to remain ignorant of what is or has taken place in THEIR UNION, or else get it second hand from someone who heard about it from someone else who himself got it from another member.
In my time we felt it an obligation to attend meeting's and to do the thing's that member's ought to do, without the Local "mandating" such.
In response to brother Tommy O'Brien's 8/16/08 posting.  I agree wholeheartedly Tommy, the union, by forcing any member to do anything only creates resentment, ill will and a negative attitude towards the union.  In essence, the unions action would only backfire.  There has to be, and is, a better way, but I'll be damned if I know what it is.
Well, thank's for allowing me to put my two-cent's in again.  I hope that it is received in the light that it was intended.  So, until next time, I hope that all of our member's and their families stay healthy, work safely, protect each other, attend  their monthly union meeting's, and oh yeah, may God bless.

Great turnout for Calvin's party down at McQuaids last night. We had a lot of laughs and spoke about some of the great times that we had working with Calvin over the years. Boy does time fly!!!

I would like to thank Kenny Stam and Dennis Corrigan for setting up this retirement party for this very fine brother.

Enjoy your union pension and your union annuity while you go off to do whatever you wish to do.

Good luck and we wish you a very healthy retirement and don't be a stranger. Stop by a meeting or two when you get bored.

Take care,
Freddie

Many of the other trades have mandatory attendance for their apprentices at the parade, so it is nothing new.  It will give some of these guys a chance to see unionism in action and maybe learn some of the history of the union movement.  Attendance the last few years has been disappointing to almost embarrassing.  I hope we have a huge turnout and not just the apprentices.  I hope a lot of members (hopefully more than at a meeting!) show up.  This is our livlihood!  We have to reinvigorate the membership of this organization.  There is a contract coming up.  We need the members to start paying attention to what is going on in our trade and the other trades in general.  This could be a start!  I just hope that more brothers and sisters check this website than the usual suspects I always see posting.  Spread the word.  I retired from the best trade in the construction business.  Let's keep it No. 1!!!!

GOOD DAY TO ALL THE MEMBERS OF LOCAL ONE,
THE OTHER DAY I MADE A STATEMENT AS TO WHAT WAS MANDATORY AND WHAT WAS SIGNATORY AND TO TELL THE TRUTH I WAS TOTALLY WRONG FOR MAKING THAT STATEMENT.
IN REGARDS TO THE MANDATORY ATTENDANCE OF THE LABOR DAY PARADE.THERE WILL BE A SCHOOL DAY CREDIT FOR ATTENDANCE FOR THE APPRENTICES. AND A GREAT TIME FOR ALL OF THE MECHANICS AND THERE FAMILY'S WHO DO ATTEND
THIS DAY OF HONOR AND RESPECT FOR ALL THE MILITARY NOW AND IN THE PAST AND THE FUTURE.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
MANDATORY AND SIGNATORY ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT WORDS. SINCE WHEN DOES LOCAL ONE HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MANDATE WHAT MEMBERS DO WITH THERE OFF TIME ?

Our union officials should be more concerned about the poor attendance at our union meetings than the attendance at the Labor Day parade.

Brothers and Sisters,

Please come out on Aug.28th to the Flat Iron Pub, 430 New Brunswick Ave in Perth Amboy (right by the local one school) at 6:30. We will be having a benefit for John Brady Jr. He was injured in May and is still recovering. We will be selling raffle tickets for $10 each. If you can't make it and you want to buy or sell tickets please email me and I will get them to you. John has a 8 month old son and has a long road of recovery ahead of him and may not be able to come back to work for a long time, due to the severe injury to his heart. So please find it in your heart to help this brother out in his time of need. Also thank you to all who gave blood in his name.

In Solidarity,
Mike Bruce

Mike i will be attending the labor day parade like i always do and always will. Since i was a kid my Dad always brought me to the labor day parade with the local. I was never forced by my dad to go to the parade I WANTED TO!!! it was a proud day for all the UNIONS. Looking back now i met alot of brothers i know now that i met at the parade when i was 10 years old, who knew 30 years later we would be working in local#1 together. Now back to brother Mike Halpin posting, you are making it mandatory for apprentices to attend the parade? FORCING MEMBERS TO ATTEND SOMETHING LIKE THE LABOR DAY PARADE IS NOT THE ANSWER TO SHOWING SOLIDARITY, ALL THAT IS DOING IS PUTTING A BANDAID ON A SERIUOS PROBLEM WE HAVE IN THIS LOCAL WHICH IS NOONE CARES!! So with thats said ill see you at the PARADE!!!

Save the date!!!!

Saturday September 6, 2008

The Labor Day Parade will be held on Saturday September 6, 2008.

We are looking forward to a very big turnout this year.

This year’s theme will be to recognize and honor the work of the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed in defense of our nation.  Members of the Wounded Warrior Project, Helmets to Hardhats and other related organizations will be the Honorary Grand Marshals and will lead our parade up Fifth Avenue.

Any Local One members, including retirees, that served in any branch of the US Military please contact Mike Halpin: mhalpin@localoneiuec.com or 718-233-9720.  We would be honored to have you lead Local One’s contingent up Fifth Avenue.

This year’s parade will be more of a traditional parade in that each union is being asked to bring at least one band and one float.  The Local One Pipes and Drums will be providing the tunes.  Atlantic-Heydt will be providing the float once again.

The Building and Construction Trades will be among the first to march this year and our block is scheduled to start moving at 10:30 am.  We will begin assembling on 44th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues at 9:00 am.  We will have entertainment for the children at the pre-parade assembly.  Coffee and bagels/muffins/doughnuts will be served.

It is mandatory that all apprentices participate and there will be members available to help sign-in and sign-out.

The post parade block party will once again be hosted by the Local 46 Metallic Lathers Union.  The party will be on 76th Street between Lexington and Second Ave. from noon to 6pm.  Food and beverages will be served, all are welcome.

I have noticed that there is a number of e-mails about Asbestos! With the rebuilding of the area around the Trade Center, many of the buildings contain toxic substances. Lead and Asbestos are the first to come to mind!

Years back Asbestos was used in the Elevator Doors and around the Headers. The G.C. now Guarantees that the building is free of lead and asbestos. But what if you find doors filled with this foul substance? Is there a policy the Union has in place to deal with this issue?
