card number 3426 Comments: Brothers and sisters: There have been many discrepancies in our union that are separating us.It brings a negative feeling within us and weakens are spirits when we should be making ourselves more aware of whats going on.I feel ignorance plagues this union not stupidity because ignorance is just being uninformed but still stating opinions. We as a union should stand behind our leaders,as we stand for ourselves.Brother Carroll has seen this and i agree with him,we need to stand strong. Our true strength is in numbers and that number is ONE.Together we can overcome differences and change our old ways into a brighter future. When asked what is my profession I don't say I'm a elevator man but a local 1 elevator man as I hope you all feel.Awareness and education is the key to our strength but this cannot be achieved if only a small ratio of members show up at meetings"STRENGTH IN NUMBERS".Everyone of us should be proud to be in this union and should want to strive to make it even better. This is our home, where we work, where our heart is,this is our union.

card number 1347 Comments: My thoughts and prayers are with brother Tommy O'Brien for a full and speedy recovery. Tommy suffered a heart attack , had surgery Friday and is doing well and recovering at Stony Brook Hospital. I visited with brother O' brien and he looked well, please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He is surrounded by his loving family. I want to also let every brother or sister who ever worked for any union that brother Tommy O'Brien is as dedicated as they come. He is a stand up brother who demonstrates the true meaning of "being a brother to a brother". Tommy like myself loves being an Union Elevator Mechanic , he strives to help others and always looks out for every ones best interest in Local One. I have always been very proud to call Tommy one of my brothers here at Local One. Keep both Tommy and his family in your prayers. Continue to work safe and PLEASE continue to check one anothers PAID Union card, If a member can't show his/her paid union card , please refer them to their shop steward or business agent. Its a privilege to work for the IUEC , your paid card should be a sign of your pride to be so fortunate to be a working member . Get involved in your union and please get involved in your local community where you live and PLEASE PLEASE get involved and get educated and vote. Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link

Brothers and Sisters:
What your about to read may be disheartening, coming from a 29 year-old mechanic who has been in the industry for eleven years. However, I’m very concerned with the future of our union, and if you feel the same way I do, then the purpose of this letter is clear. I have been a steward for four years. I’ve recently volunteered for the organizing committee. The past few years have been difficult for our local. I believe that for most, change is not easy. However, I consider change to be essential when moving forward. The way things are going we will never move forward if we do not start coming together as one union. We have groups among us that want to run our union, instead of being soldiers of the union. The old days are over, but we have one of the best trades in the country…It is nothing to be sad about! Instead of dwelling on the past, our members should show pride in our union by voicing their concerns at our meetings and other events. I understand that it might be hard for some individuals to do so, but hiding behind “The Shaft” is a cowardly act. I’m asking now for us to come together and honor our local’s number.
Matt Carroll
card number 72648 (Gold Card) Comments: Just want to say hello to all the Brothers and Sisters in Local One. I miss seeing you guys at the Bldg. Trades and other meetings. Myself, Gene Harriss and you Brothers had some times together and they are memories that last a lifetime. Been retired almost 4 years now and Ain't Life Grand. Would love to hear from some of you. Take care. You're the finest UNION BROTHERS I ever met. George Stromberg Retired Local 10 IUEC
card number 14 Comments: I would like to THANK the Brothers from the Goldman Saks job for once again going the extra mile for a brother in need. These Brothers have donated for every cause that comes up. They have been 100% behind the x-mas toy drive and now for Billy Bott's kid. Just a thought, only if we were all like these BROTHERS? Semper Fi, Freddie
card number 1634 Comments: After yet another low turnout of roughly the same 100 people at this month's union meeting, I believe we should move our meetings to the union hall in Long Island City. The convenience of Manhattan doesn't seem to be working, and a move to the union hall would save hundreds of dollars each month in rental fees to the public school.
card number 54 Comments: Thanks to all who came to the party last night,it was great to see everyone. Hope you all had a good time. Thank you Lenny for coming by,and thanks to my partner Tyke for setting it all up.

card number 1347 Comments: Most importantly my thoughts and prayers are with the entire Bottiligleri family during this most difficult time. Billy I are were helpers together at Armor Elevator back in the early eighties. Please brothers and sisters come out and support our brother here, If you can't attend please send a check. On another note , what a tragedy regarding the worker killed in fall from 23rd floor in NYC, he was a window installer . His name was Kevin Kelly and he was 25 years young what a shame. The newspaper said it was due to a faulty nylon safety strap. This brings to mind a few safety procedures WE all need to follow here in Local One, never use any one else's safety equipment, never use any rigging or hoisting equipment if it hasn't been tested and tagged annually regardless of when it was used last. Safety regardless of who you work for is your responsibility, If your not sure of the safety of any safety equipment whether it's personal or rigging DON'T USE IT!!!! You have an obligation to work as safe as you can so you can see your families after work. Landing block hardware bolts should only be used once and thrown away, please brothers and sisters always work safe and look after one another . IF YOU SEE SOMEONE WORKING UNSAFE PLEASE EDUCATE THEM . Respectfully submitted Brother Brian Link

card number 1182 Comments: Great news about Start Elevator having to pay prevailing wages and benefits to it's workers.Maybe we could get Comptroller Thompson to come work for Local 1.He might be able to get some of the rogue companies that are "signed" with us to pay the benefits that they have cheated some of our members out of.One thing is for sure, we pay better than the City does! |
