It's all about going home without an injury at the end of the day with all the pieces of your body. Just ask someone who works for a company that does not give you all the things that you should have. Brother John Palma

card number 1671 Comments: Brothers and sisters, This past week at Otis, we had WW safety audits. Although I was not audited, some of my close co-workers were. We work safe month in and month out, year by year, even when no AUDITERS are around. Now there's that buzz about how the auditers SCORED us on how safe THEY think we work. Our score is based on how well we have memorized the Safety Handbook, and our ability to demonstrate some of it. As I have posted in the past, I think a safety handbook is a great tool. But working safe is not about memorizing a book. Safety comes from three things. Experience, knowledge of equipment, and common sense. Memorizing books was what we did to graduate high school. Graduating high school was not life threatening, our job is! As the week of audits was ending, I observed a difference in my co-workers. They were very concerned with some SAFETY issues they failed on. "I altered an Otis issued jumper so it would work safely on vendor equipment". Otis can't even make jumpers that work safely on all of their own equipment, let alone vendors. We alter it to make it safe, we're violating a Cardinal rule? "I didn't properly demonstrate personal fall protection on top of car". I think this is a common sense call. Personal fall protection on top of car can cause injury or death, more than helping you work safe. "I didn't fill out my Hazscan form correctly". FORM! Our eyes are our hazscan. In my opinion, the thought process in filling out a form distracts us from the real hazzards. You see, its all about the Safety Hand book. The auditors know this text, but can they demonstrate it, or perform our jobs ? Maybe. How safe should we feel if someone can't demonstrate what they preach? And if what they preach really isn't safe. So my brothers and sisters, lets not lose site of the real dangers. Don't let these audits cloud your mind. Stay aware of the real dangers, and work safe. Brother Paul Agnello Proud Husband of Lori Agnello

card number 86 Comments: Dear Brothers and Sisters: This post is, thankfully, meant for only a small minority of our members. There are brothers and sisters among us that feel a pain that can only be understood by those who have experienced a similar fate. Dealing with any type grief is, often times, better handled when one has an outlet in which to share their feelings. No better place to share than with someone who knows how you feel. I.U.E.C. Local One is forming a support group for brothers or sisters that have lost a child. This support group, being hosted by Brothers Stephen Dziuma and Frank Trainor, will hold informal meetings on a regular basis or as needed. Meetings, at which we can talk, listen, cry and yes, even share a laugh. It is important to know that we are only brothers who care and not psychologist, counselors or therapists. Our health plan does cover us for professional grief counseling and we can help in getting that care, if so wanted. Everyone deals with their grief differently and this group may not be for you, but if you are interested in joining our group please call the hall and they will put us in touch with you.
card number 1347 Comments: Dear Brothers & Sisters, In 430 days, approximately 1 year plus 65 days or on March 17th 2009 our present contract WILL EXPIRE. We all need to ask ourselves are we as individuals any better prepared for a lockout or strike or work stoppage? This is not a personal decision , your families well being is at stake . On Thursday January 17th we will have a great opportunity to show our strength as a union as well as your true concerns as a dues paying Local One member. Why is this meeting so important? Our International Officials will be in attendance. I challenge ALL members of Local One who are truly concerned members of Local One to attend. I also urge all shop stewards and members to reach out and ask and educate some members who usually don't attend to come to meeting. IF THEIR IS ONE MEETING THIS YEAR YOU SHOULD ATTEND, THIS IS IT. While working I come across many members who complain about dues, who second guess the direction of our union among other issues. My first question to any other member is , do you attend union meetings? have you asked or addressed you concerns with anyone? Well I'm sure you know a lot of our brothers or sisters answer NO! SHI.... or get off the toilet, If you refuse to get involved whether it's at work or in your community , you really lose your right to complain " do as I do not as I say" Being a union member is a privilege , you have a shop steward , a business agent and a president who work for US. How can we expect our union officials to know what's important to us , If we are not involved? Bring your question s or your concerns to the union meeting, If your not comfortable at the microphone , speak to your fellow workers or your shop steward, call me or ask someone PLEASE PLEASE don't sit idly by , and do nothing . Regarding our new contract to be negotiated for 2009 , it's never to early to start and write down all the issues or concerns with the present agreement that you DON'T like so our officials can address them. I hear some great ideas out there in the field , but unless other people hear your ideas its just a WISH. See everyone at the meeting , lets start the New Year on the right foot , be responsible for what you do when you put on your shoes everyday. Please challenge one another for a paid union card , continue to reach out and help one another, most of all stay involved in your family , your place of worship and your union. Thank you for reading my thoughts. As always I remain a truly concerned , educated and proud member of Local One , Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link
