card number Retired Comments: Time is getting short and the response for the Local 1 Picnic is lagging. Dear Brothers and Sisters and fellow Retirees the picnic is a family event. It is where old friends who have perhaps lost touch and families who do not live close by each other reconnect and have a great day. There seems to be an apathy in the membership of late. The concept of UNION seems to be losing favor. Dear Friends, if we do not act and think as one management is waiting to set us back where they think we belong. We enjoy a good wage and benefit package (retirement is pretty good, too.) It is because of the brotherhood we enjoy in Local 1. I spent 39 great years in Local 1. There was a great sense of UNION. It was reflected in the annual picnics. The picnics drew us together and strengthened us. Families were joined. Wives and children made good friends. This is no time to let petty differences keep us apart. Let us come to the picnic and start pulling together to face the next contract as a UNION. Let's make this picnic a resounding success. Let's bring back that sense of Family and Union and have a great day together!! Rich Amberson and the picnic committee SEE YOU THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

card number 1347 Comments: Happy 4th of July- Independence Day Enjoy your family and friends and your freedom Tomorrow is July 5th, the birth date of Labor's Magna Carta. In 1935 , the National Labor Relations Act was established. This act guarantees the right to organize and bargain. Remember this important date in organized labor's history. It is one of the foundation blocks of our livelihood . This one act is responsible for many organized union members earning a decent wage and living a decent life. ( This is a reprint from an article submitted by Local 25 president Michael Gleiforst of Denver Colorado). Sometimes we have a tendency to forget how we got to where we are? as a country, as a union and as a good person whether its a father , brother, sister or son or mom. Anything worth anything good in life is NOT easy, but it's always worth the hard work and effort. PLEASE PLEASE never forget what people did before us so we can enjoy what we have here in the USA. Most of all enjoy OUR day , July 4th, with your family and friends. God Bless America. Respectfully submitted Brother Brian Link
card number Retired Comments: Brothers and Sisters The members have spoken and the election is over. Congratulations to all those that ran! Now is the time to get the UNION up and runnning as the best Union in Our area and the country! We have a picnic coming up. I have been involved with the Local 1 Picnic for over 20 years. It is the best in the construction industry. Our members and families have been enjoying these picnics and many a member met his or her future partner there. The last few years attendance has dropped. Some have said it is too far, too hard to get the family together, or they don't want to see somebody. Bull! This is a day for the families and for friends to get together and have fun. (Maybe win a Harley) It is the best way I can think of to get started on a united front again. To start being a UNION again. Come to the Picnic, bring the family, and most important Be a UNION again!!! Hope to see you all there!! Retirement is great. What a pension. Rich Amberson
card number Retired (1985) Comments: To begin with, the reason that I include my nickname, "Hushpuppy," is because all of the members that I have worked with over the years know me more by that name than my real name. I guess when they found it difficult to pronounce my last name correctly some one labeled me with the nickname. Nuff said. Now to the issue at hand. Probably like some of you, I fail to understand how, or even why some of our members bother to take the time to vote, unless they're going to vote for ALL OF OFFICE'S. Without question, the final results of the election showed that ROW C had completely swept ROW B. I know that the total number of votes, according to the results that were posted, was 2,194, at least that was the total number of votes that were cast for the three candidates running for the position of President/Business Manager. I take note that John Green Jr. was beaten by his opponent by only 110 votes. I consider that a close race, and should be an incentive for brother Green to throw his hat back in the ring three years from now. The time for all members that might contemplate running for office in the future IS NOW, the day after the election. However, for the next three years, at least, every member should march in step to the beat of the drum. Always remember the saying, UNITED we stand, DIVIDED we fall. A couple of the other races had me scratching my head. I asked myself, "Why were there 405 LESS votes cast for the position of Recording-Secretary, and 323 LESS votes cast for the Secretary-Treasurer's job?" These are two important positions, one is to accurately record all union business, and the other has to do with the union finances. Plus, both officers hold a position on the Executive Board which at times make decisions that apply to your livelihood and the welfare of your families. Failure to vote on these two positions, or for any position, to me, is senseless. In the past, even though I openly questioned why some of the other members on the ticket were running, I ran on "a slate," a full ticket, but I'm not in favor of such today. The way people vote today, if the don't like one candidate, they push all of the levels on the same row, eliminating some of the more experienced and qualified candidates on the same ticket simply because they dislike ONE of them. Its a disservice to the candidates as well as the union, which may have benefited. A better system would be to let each candidate draw their position on the ballot. The membership themselves, through the candidates literature, personal knowledge, or by word of mouth, would be in a better position to vote selectively rather than for or against an entire slate, or "row." I also believe, living in a land where freedom of speech is an inherited right, that every member, including retiree's like myself, should have the right to say what they want in campaign literature or on the website. Of course profanity is the exception to the rule, and a slanderous statement could be resolved in a court of law. Other than for those two things, there should be no form of "censorship" whatsoever. If someone wants to knock the union, an officer, or a member, I believe they have every right to do so, and of course everyone has the right to respond. That's a part of what this country is all about, and don't anyone even try to take it away.

card number 2757 Comments: I would like to say congratulations to everyone who ran except you know who,It was a very close election and many were sad with the results and that made me sad.We are one and I hope that our newly elected president extends the olive branch to all who ran and to all who supported those candidates.we have been split too long. Some of those candidates need to get back to work, its been way too long, get rid of a new helper and help a 10,20 ,30 year member. The election got very ugly, and some things were just uncalled for.Was there really a rat in jersey? because that was just low.We are all members, yet many with different opinions don't feel that way,so I am looking forward to a new beginning,I wish we would get rid of tickets, its such a brutal friendship costing caveman way to get elected.I also don't like the polls in jersey.I would not mind alternating an entire election in each place so that all members have a chance to be close to the polls but the two places just feels like a contest,We have just been split for so long, and the retiree's,why can't they vote? why would you cast such wisdom away?President legotte,I ask of you to extend that olive branch and bring all members together, those who voted for you and those who did not,I hope you all take it serious how close this election was.The members including myself are sick of being ruled by a czar,Ray I wish you well, but dude you need a vacation,Let's get back to a time where vindictiveness is not worth any ones time,Forgiveness is what a brother does, and negotiations are first and for-most.I have to say at the end of the night I threw my say no to danbo shirt to him,he caught it and he laughed and life went on,and that's when this post hit me. Can we all just laugh at the end of the day?Congrats to row C,and congrats to row B,believe it or not Row B you all made a difference, you made members come out, the members sent a message,it was truly a democracy,And now we shall see if they heard it.I don't want to be on this side ,or that side,I just want to be proud of local one, proud of pro- labor, proud to stand with the other trades,we are too small to be this split, Let the healing begin. yours in solidarity always your twisted sister Liz.
card number Retired (1985) Comments: To begin with, I would just like to say that sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you. Another way of looking at it is, sometimes you're the pidgeon, and sometimes you're the statue. The elections are over, and today is the tomorrow that you thought about yesterday. I would like to congradulate the members who were elected to office for the next three years, and to offer my sincerest condolences to those who gave it their best shot but lost. It is extremely important, for both sides, the ROW B guys and the ROW C guys to put their differences aside and work together for the betterment of the union as a whole. Working together, as you should, you can all turn this union around, but it will take a determined team effort on all of your part's. As I had said in my 6/20/07 posting, you can't count on SOMEONE ELSE anymore. Its a matter of sink or swim. Its your decision. If you enjoy your work, your pay, and your benefits, think about how they were obtained? To help you, I'll try to recall some of the wonderful people that fought for these things that so many now take for granted, like they actually had a right to them. It was brothers like "Iron Mike" Carfly, a foreman on the Time & Life Building where I first started and became a member of Local 1. Then there was "Rails" Carlsen, who moved to Hollywood, Florida and became president of that Local, a position that forty some odd years later his son now holds. There was also guys like "Red Shirt" Wallace, "Bubble Nose" Borry, "Harry The Horse" York, "Bathless" McNally, and many other nicknames that escape me right now like "Sweetsie", "The Chief", "Mongo", "The Animal", "The Fonz", and one for Willie Moore that I'd get in trouble if I mentioned it today. Of course there was "Hushpuppy", me. I also remember dedicated brothers like Ray Bender, Harry Shields, Ed Halpin, Huey Miles, Joe Kelly, Tommy McGoldrick, and former union presidents George Koch, Vinny Watson, Karl Stork and to me, the best of the lot, John Green Sr. Its a pity that characters like us couldn't get together a write a book, each one of us with our own chapter telling of our experiences in Local 1. It would be a best seller for sure. On a sad note I also remember some of our brothers that took the plunge, down the hatch. Terry O'Neil, doing someone a favor while they drank their coffee, was checking the rigging on the ninteenth floor when the counterweight frame that was being hoisted caught on a wood frame. The hoist cable came up in front of Terry and went overhead to a snatch block and down the hatch in back of him. The "rusted" bent up 3/8 sling holding the block broke and the cable came down and caught Terry on the back, pushing him into the hatch, down ninteen floors. Then there was Pete Fanning, I think his name was Pete, he went down on the Sarrett City Job. Pete Gannon left our job, coming back the next day to pick up his tools, and telling us that the way they were working on that job someone was going to get killed. Unfortunately, Pete predicted his own death. The platform that he was working on collapsed and he dropped out of sight. Jim Jensen, a gentleman if there ever was one, was working on the Pan-Am building putting weights in the counterweight frame. Unbeknown to Jim, or the two helpers with him, someone had moved one of the 4X6's underneath the scaffold. While they were moving around the scaffold shifted and collapsed. One of the helpers, his arm wrapped around the rail, grabbed Jim. The helper was halfway into the hatch, and Jim, makes my eyes tear up telling this, looked at the young helper and said, according to the helper himself, "let me go kid, or I'll take you with me." The kid let go and Jim took that final plunge, the one that in the back of our minds we all dread. The helper, from what I was told had a nervous breakdown and later quit the business. There were others, and God forbid there may be more in the future. But the last one that I like to mention happened on the South Tower of the World Trade Center which was my second home for seven years. It was just one day after our seven month strike. We were fighting fabrication. We were glued together as one, its called "unity", and no matter how bad we were hurting, we held out, and we won. I was proud of our union back then, of our members. Anyway, on that fateful day, an elevator operator named "Moe" Moholly, passed me by, sayin his "hello," and then, walking into the wrong car on the 44th floor, stepped into space. Another brother gone. The overall foreman that ran the job on the Twin Towers was Frank "The Silver Fox" Pike, and the lead foremen in each tower was Tommy Donavan in the North Tower and Walter Bilski in the South Tower. Walter recently passed away. Gene Labouseur (?) one of the foremen under Walter also passed away a while back. I have always made an attempt to pay my last respects to a deceased brother. Now, because the death of a member is no longer placed in the obituary section of The Daily News, as it had been for as long as I can remember, I find out, too late, about a members passing when I receive the IUEC Journal. I would like to personally thank brother Duffy for keeping the members informed on important matters, and in this instance, the passing of a member. I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree, and I am just beginning to learn how to work this damn new computer contraption. I bought a book, "Computers For Dummies." I read it twice, and I'm still a dummy. I don't know how I got off on this morbid topic, except to remind each and every member, no matter which department you work in, to be extra careful when you're working in or near the hatch. Practice safety, your families will appreciate it, and love you even more. There were numerous issues presented during the election, some true, some maybe not, but a lot of the ones that I read, being legitimate, should be addressed. Never mind who brought it forth, or why, address it, resolve it, and put it to rest. If its in the best interest of the membership then it should, it must, be acted upon. Don't sweep it under the rug like it doesn't exist. The last thing that I like to request, is for someone to find the solution to the members apathy, and how to make them want to attend monthly meetings. If I was still active, and allowed to, I would make a motion every third month to raise all of the officers salaries 25%, or lease more expensive cars, increase their spending allowance, or raise the dues another $100. Of course none of these things would ever pass (???), but I think the hall would be packed to the rafters. Anyway, God bless each and everyone of you, and all of our departed brothers and sisters. Here is something that a chaplain in the United States Senate once said, and its something for each member to think about. He said, I am only one, but I am one. I can't do everything, but I can do something. And what I can do, that which I ought to do, and what I ought to do, by the grace of God, I shall do." Maybe the correspondent to the IUEC Journal could include it in his next article for the entire membership of the International to think, and perhaps, memorize.
card number 1560 Comments: Hello Brothers and Sisters, Now that the elections are over I hope we can get to the heart of the matter " The Future Of Local#1 International union of elevator constructors. There were many great candidates and I for one appreciate the efforts of everyone who had the courage to run in this election. Let`s get behind our elected officials and help them restore the respect and power this union once held. Just as important I hope our elected officials stand for the membership. Buisness Agents, please start showing up on job sites without a phone call. Come down to the Shanties in the morning, shake hands with the members and most of all keep us informed. Everyday I see a new piece of equipment from elevator manufacturers. Should we take it apart??? Does it get installed in one piece???? Is someone else doing my work???? There were many great things about John Green Sr but I think the greatest thing of all was the fact that he seemed to know just about every member of this union by name. Yesterday when I voted many candidates shook my hand and told me their names. I know who you are!! It was important enough for me to know. I would like to ask that our elected officials get out on the streets and learn who I and the rest of the membership are!!!! Sincerely Yours in Union, John Mathisen Card#1560
card number 1347 Comments: Congratulations to ALL the candidates from Row A , Row B & Row C . Row C were winners , but I feel we are ALL winners for being INVOLVED & TRULY Concerned Members of Local 1 I.U.E.C. ---I'm asking all the members I met over the last 4 weeks or so to "step up to the plate" and get involved. I met so many members saying What can I do? Well we can ALL be more involved, we need to put some time aside from our busy lives and volunteer our time to assist and educate ALL our members young and "old" . Our leadership needs an involved , educated and informed membership . WE WILL ALWAYS BE THE EYES AND EARS OF THIS LOCAL. We need to be UNITED, I will be reaching out to the New Leadership as a concerned members of Local 1. How can I help? What committees can I get involved with? How can we volunteer our time? I will as always continue to be an involved, concerned , educated & truly proud member of Local One. I really enjoyed getting out and meeting alot of concerned and smart members over the last month , your ideas should't DIE on the job , bring them to the meeting. In closing I want to THANK the entire Row B ticket for their tireless UNITED effort , I am very proud of OUR EFFORT. DON'T ASK YOURSELF WHAT CAN LOCAL 1 DO FOR ME? ASK YOURSELF WHAT CAN I DO FOR LOCAL 1? Thank you for coming out to vote, continue to work safe and protect our work. Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link

card number 1877 Comments: Dear Brothers & Sisters, I cannot describe what an honor and a privilege it has been for the last six weeks to be running for Vice President Business Agent on the ROW B TICKET. The brothers on this ticket and myself campaigned tirelessly throughout the New York and New Jersey vicinity, giving our ideas and listening to members in the hopes to make a difference in our great Local. Our platform was listened to by all and the feedback that was received by many was mainly positive and we thank you for that. The brothers that I campaigned with for the last six weeks have proven what this union is all about. Brothers that are not afraid to take a stand and try to make things right, no matter what the results of tonights election. Not only have I learned many lessons about union and life but I was also graced to work with 15 of the most finest human beings and unionists on the face of this earth. Thank you gentlemen. Forgive me a rare opportunity to witness unionism at its finest. God Bless You All !! Geezer Cerbone
