card number 11 Comments: Dear Brothers and Sister's of Local #1 This information was forwarded by our International regarding an upcoming vote on Immigration reform. The attached is the June 7th vote on the Cloture Motion regarding the Immigration Reform Act Bill No. S.1348. Please note, a Yea vote indicates your US Senator voted in favor of the bill which includes the guest worker provision which would drive down wages and benefit standards for all US construction and trades workers. This bill is, to quote Building and Construction Trades Department President Edward Sullivan, "A dangerously flawed approach to comprehensive immigration reform". We believe this bill, if it passes, will start a downward spiral of the wages, benefits and conditions our predecessors fought hard to build and protect. Please forward this information , asking them to forward it to as many of their membership as possible to ask them to contact their US Senator(s) voicing their opposition to this Bill and asking they vote NO on Bill S.1348 and/or the Cloture Motion of this Bill when it comes back on the floor within the next few days. card number 2757 Comments: Looking beyond the politics, wow. That was a great letter written and posted by Bob.And I got to say Bob whoever you are,its scary out here, the new members don't care and I guess plenty of old ones too.I meet new members daily, they get there card real quick today, they make overtime right away, they get hooked up with great mechanics,They are good people, but not good members,I think when one waited for there card, they grew impatient and respected it,they couldn't wait to attend a meeting ,get overtime, voice there opinion, stand up to someone, nowadays, they get there card and all they do is complain about how much it cost,go to a meeting? nah, why, whats the point, deals are being made left and right to suit one's self, members are afraid if they ain't running fast enough they will be laid off,and let me tell you, literally, fingers are flying all over the place,I have said it before and I will say it again, when things are going well for one's self, they don't care, when it goes bad ,they run to the union,we may not live in times where we are begging for a window to be opened or a bathroom unlocked, but don't you think for a minute that when your hair turns gray,or you start running out of steam or god forbid cancer strikes, don't you believe for a minute that you won't be replaced and forgotten by the company, not your brothers,And don't you believe for a minute they would pay us more then 10 dollars if it were up to them and what kills me,is when I hear about the cut backs and tightening of the belts, whether it be a contractor company whining about union labor or an elevator company, lets just say they were able to pay everyone 10 dollars an hour,Do you think the customer would see a savings? or the GC 's pockets would be bigger. So lose your attitudes and make a difference, get off your asses and vote, attend the union picnic! It is a day of rest and fun to mingle and socialize with your brothers and sisters outside of work,it is a day when your wives ,husbands and children get to see what a great union you belong to, a day to celebrate and be proud to be an elevator constructor............ Just a note to my buddy P. stop rolling your eyes and get the windex........In solidarity as always your twisted sister Liz .

card number Retired (1985) Comments: From the very first, in 1959, and a lifetime since, I have always tried to be a part of the union, and to do the things that I was obligated to do as a member. I was not alone. The union back then had nothing, so we had a common goal which united us. Thanks to many of your former union brothers, who have since taken their last vertical ride upstairs (hopefully), you now enjoy the benefits of our efforts and sacrifice, i.e., pensions, health coverage, annuities, vacations, job protection for shop stewards, safety committees etc., etc., all of which were non-existent in the past. While I served on the School Committee for five years, I also served as the shop steward on the South Tower of the World Trade Center for the same period of time. Brother Tommy Nolan (retired) was the steward in the North Tower. Tommy also served as Recording Secretary and later as Day Secretary. The point is, guys like Tommy and myself gave of ourselves, simply because we considered ourselves good union men. As John Wayne (The Duke) use to say, "A man's gotta do what he's gotta do." Tommy and I did. When I was laid off at the Towers by Otis, much to their delight, the union told me that the Long Island Rail Road was hiring electricians. I was lucky I could correctly install batteries in a flashlight, but I thought what the hell, give it a shot. The interviewer knew as much as I did about electricity so I got over on him easily, Then I was interviewed by one of the bosses who knew his stuff, but somehow I managed to bluff myself through. Not once, in twenty-three years did I ever do any electrical work. It was mostly all mechanical. I had to join Local 589 of the IBEW, and as I always knew, the IBEW sucks. I became a shop steward and years later president of the union. There were about 650 members in the union, and at the monthly meetings only about FIVE-PERCENT showed up. The majority of this number were either officers, appointed officials, or members serving on committees. There was a time when any monthly meeting I went to in Local 1, and I missed damn few, there were no less than five hundred members. The meetings were extremely interesting and informative. Unlike the members today, in both Local's 1 and 589, we not only knew the names of every officer, but we knew what they were required to do, and if they were doing it, simply because we cared. From what I've read in these e-mails, the union is on a slippery skid downhill. Doesn't anyone care anymore, do they want to lose the union? Its as if the inmates have taken control of the asylum, and that's what some of them should be "INMATES." You not only have to stick together, become informed and fight for the things that you now have, but you have to fight even harder to keep them. Apathy is cancerous, and if not treated, can become fatal. In this case, the demise of your livelihood. Its not a joke, not something to be taken lightly, so wise up, and the sooner the better. And what numbnut is responsible for the loss of the operators jobs? I can think of a million tortures to inflict on that rectal cavity. None of these things would have happened on my good friend John Green's watch, not while he was president. This man only thought of the union and the members, never himself, and that's a fact. Unfortunately, SOMEONE ELSE has passed on. There was a time, when something needed doing, or important decisions to be made, there were always those, standing way in the back, yeoling, "let SOMEONE ELSE do it." Well, not anymore. You can no longer count on SOMEONE ELSE to do what YOU should be doing as a union man or woman. Its time for each and every member to stand up tall, and proudly say, "I'm a UNION MAN, or a UNION WOMAN, and we are a close knit family that truly care about one another Its been a long long time since I started to work in construction for Westinghouse on the Time & Life Building across from the Radio City Music Hall, and although many of us old timers are closer to the end than we are to the beginning, I vividly recall the good times and the many great people that I was fortunate to meet in our industry. As for the upcoming election, having known and respected John Green Sr. for a great number of years, all I can say is if John Green Jr. has an iota of the smarts that his father had, then I would sincerly urge each of you to support his effort to represent you. I wish all of the brothers and sisters in our great Local 1 the very bet. Now, get out there and change course, head YOUR UNION in a new and better direction.
