Dear Brothers& Sisters
Some members said my last posting sounded angry, actually I was angry the night of the vote from that point on I was just disappointed.
My comments were not meant to impugn anyones character, they were merely meant to question our candidates views on what I considered to be debatable decisions by the current administration.
Now let me get back to one of my  favorite topics the defense  fund, since it appears  to me that were stuck with this pig  maybe  we can put a dress on it  & make it fly.
/I'd  like to invite our candidates to wade  in on this debate  since it's  a major financial burden to the average rank and file worker.
Let me throw a few trial balloons out there and see how they fly,
A- A complete annual audit by and independent accounting corp.
B-elect by machine ballot, four members to oversee the fund.
C-Pay and independent financial advises to sit on the fund committee as the swing vote, his salary could come from the funds investments.
D-Remove the business agents from the fund board ,to much power in the hands of too few is dangerous.
E-Establish guidelines  to determine how this money can be used, the way it is now the process is completely clandestine.
F-Create a framework for the investors to work with this is not a retirement fund T bills and bonds sound good.
But above all brothers and sisters demand answers from your candidates, hold there feet to the fire, this is your union these people work for you when they come to visit you over the next few weeks demand a more transparent accounting system accountability is paramount.

Dear Brothers&Sisters
As we can plainly see the Local One political season is upon us,for the next few weeks you will be deluged with a never ending supply of paper most of which is no more useful than the roll of toilet paper that hangs in your bathroom,
I have been in local one for more than thirty five years and as you can well imagine have seen many a candidate come and go and oh so many campaign promises made and forgotten.
The current cast of characters seems to have forgotten what got them there, their promise to clean up all the wrong doings of there predecessors I was so happy I even started to attend union meeting again,up until the vote for the defense fund.
A number of years ago I was watching the history channel as they were recording a paper ballet election in a third world nation , I found our paper ballet  vote somewhat similar except that in the third world vote they took attendance and made sure the votes matched the number of people who voted, the night I entered the school to vote no one took attendance, listen third world nations use paper ballets you want an honest election you put out machines and treat your rank and file with the dignity they deserve.
Now that im on the subject of the defense fund, how about our fresh collection of political wawabees dealing with this hot potato, how about an accounting statement to start with, how much is in the fund, where is it invested, how much interest have we collected, how many loans have we made and to who, when if ever will this money be repaid, and last but not least a completely different voted upon cast of characters to administer this Defense fund.
Next let me turn my attention to the annuity fund , every time I get my statement the interest is always accrued from the previous years total,my curiosity is what becomes of the interest on the monies contributed during the year this is a huge sum of money going somewhere.
I personally have little hope that anyone currently running will answer or implement any of my suggestions after all many of these people were the architects of the problem to start with ,  however if enough people ask then even the deaf will listen.

MEMORIAL DAY'S TRUE MEANING
Memorial Day is the day we set aside to HONOR and remember those who have fallen in service to our country. Over the years , the true purpose of Memorial Day has faded. Many of us think of it as just another three-0day weekend or the start of the summer barbecue season. Parades are sparsely attended, and proper flag etiquette is forgotten. Some people mistakenly think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not exclusively those fallen in service to our country.
This Memorial Day, lets all take a step back and remember its true meaning . There are a few of us whose family or friends have not been touched by the tragedy of war , but we all have benefited from the sacrifices our soldiers make everyday. It takes very little to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
( This letter is a reprint of a letter to the editor , Today's Newsday, Thomas Crist of Melville , Long Island).
Most of all brothers and sisters be grateful for everything we have here in the United States. Reach out to others less fortunate then you and I . Be good to one another. Be a brother to a brother, look after one another young and old .
Enjoy the holiday weekend. Extremely important election coming up June 21 2007. The future of our local is in our own hands , support fiscal responsibility, support candidates who have the best interest of the Local at heart, most of all be educated and make your voice your vote. Education is knowledge, get out and vote, know the issues and make an educated  decision, your very own future and the future of Local One depends on it. I will always remain an educated , involved , active and proud member of Local One.
                Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link

Congratulations to brother Joe Nolan on his retirement. What a nice turnout for his celebration last night at the Captains Ketch. Many nice words were said about Joe but what I heard most was that JOE was always there for everyone . I personally have a tremendous amount of respect for brother Joe Nolan a former day secretary, principal of the school and more importantly a very a true gentlemen who educated the members with tough love (the same tough love my own dad shown me growing up) I will be forever grateful to both of them.
Joe I wish you and your family the best in your retirement, may God Bless you with many more years of good health. Most of all thank you Joe, we will miss you .
On another subject, nominations are Tuesday May 8th. We need to focus on a new direction to take here at Local One. We need to vote and support candidates that are concerned for the entire membership , not for their own personal gains.
We must ask ourselves what are we all willing to do as well as sacrifice to bring our Local back into better shape? 1) Financially 2) Boost Morale 3) Truly Educate our entire membership 4) WE MUST look at the way Local one operates as a business. Also we as members should be  truly concerned about building back good working respected relationships with all the other TRADE unions.
Sacrifices need to be made and It must start first with our Local and how we can cut our operating costs. I am looking forward to the challenges in front of us .
Brothers and sisters we MUST treat this upcoming election as a tremendous opportunity for a better future. What are you willing to do ?
I remain as always an educated , involved and truly concerned member of Local One . Continue to work safe and check one another for a paid union card .
                         Respectfully Submitted Brother Brian Link

Brothers and sisters,
Nominations for the General Election are in two weeks. I have decided to try an unorthodox method, basically an exploratory poll to see which office (if any) the membership would like me to run for. Anyone can e-mail me with questions or comments (please keep them clean, in case my seven year-old should read them) about a position they would like me to try and fill.Put "election" in the subject, so I know it's from a member, not spam.
For those of you who don't know me, I was doing recon during the lock-out. Catching scabs and posting their pictures and/or work locations on this site. Because of this, and the fact that I am VERY outspoken, I have suffered some consequences both at my current company, and at another company that has basically blacklisted me from future employment. I still, however, maintain that one can be a good Union member, and still be a good employee, without selling out.
Thanks for your time,
Danbo

Recently I was looking over my life insurance  policy and putting papers together,When  I realized,I really  don't have enough  Life insurance, and to be honest,I really don't care,My kids are older ,and would probably dig a hole in the yard and stick me in it and spend the rest on a Norwegian cruise,But I was really concerned about disability insurance,The collection box everyone here  does at Local one when  someone is hurt is a great gesture of we care, but it certainly doesn't pay ones mortgage, and  life insurance is great but lets face it,your dead, tell your family to order a few copies of death certificates, send them out and tell the bill collectors to go fly a kite..O.k. a little morbid but what can I say, I am more concerned about living,so I made some calls and found through Met life a really good deal.Life insurance and disability insurance. The disability insurance is way expensive by itself but with the life insurance package its much cheaper. The disability alone was almost 300 a month, but the package total was 135 a month for 100,ooo life and 2000 a month disability for up to 5 years. The life insurance is whole life insurance and earns dividends after keeping the policy 10 years or so.You have to do a physical but they come to your home.lets face it guys,No one wants to get hurt, but if you do,are you prepared to pay your bills? In fact I 'd like to change the death assessment to a disability assessment,People need help when they are alive, not dead,I know we have been down that debate before, but I think someone needs 30 grand to stay alive, more so then when  they aren't.So anyone interested in disability insurance, can call Dominic M. Parke's at met life,631-582-6544 ext.5801,or call whomever they choose,
